@@kingmidas430 Yeah, so when I first got into coffee I just bought a temperature-controlled kettle but it wasn't a gooseneck so pour-overs were difficult. I recently just acquired a V60 & gooseneck and am enjoying them, much more clarity in my cup. But like @kevadu said, the Aeropress is really hard to screw up; I love how unfussy it is to use. So lately my go-to is the V60 but I will always appreciate (and frequently use) the Aeropress.

@@mistafishman why not a switch? Recently got it, and my aeropress is bascially just for taveling (even before, with using a v60). Swtich is more verstatile, better taste, also glass, amd eaisier to brew bigger batches. Might gift the aeropress to someone else now and just use my switch for traveling as well. 150$ for everything seems like the complete opposite of what the aeropress wanted to fill as a travelneed

@daniel.lopresti
@daniel.lopresti 3 ай бұрын
I did, once. Not quite burned but did spill coffee on my hands. I got the habit of squeezing out the air gap while using the inverted method (hard to explain, draw yourself a mental picture :) ), and there's almost no resistance if you haven't yet put on the filter cap thing. So one tiny push and your hand slips all the way down and suddenly your coffee is airborne! Only happened once.

I wouldn't say unfounded. Everybody's different. If you do it properly, it's not dangerous. Some people get flummoxed or are careless. Or they didn't quite understand how to do it. Obviously, the manufacturer will advise people not to use the inverted method because if even 1 out of 20 customers are bad at it or are careless, that's a lot of hot coffee being spilled and a lot of people getting splashed and burned. I wouldn't tell anyone to use the inverted method without demonstrating it first and even walking them through it.

@Jason-ir5ig
@Jason-ir5ig 3 ай бұрын
Can confirm. The volume of a cylinder is pi*r^2*h. The same volume of coffee used in both would mean that the height of the cylinder with a 5cm radius would be 36/25 times the height of the 6cm cylinder, or 1.44 times taller.

Great Video as always. One small detail.. The thermal stability is higher for bigger diameters (ignoring the material), because the surface grows with 2*pi*r and the volume by r^2 (which grows faster). You said it the other way around. That's why Polar bears are bigger than Brown bears..

curious with that logic - if that's the case, why does a bigger pot of water cool down much faster than a narrower cup of water (given the same amount of liquid in both)?
@timonsku
@timonsku 3 ай бұрын
you can't ignore the material, if the double walled glas insulates better than the plastic then the spot where you have the most heat exchange is where you have contact with the free air, that contact surface is smaller. Thermals are complex, you can't break it down with just volume comparison without considering the environment.

@@varunprasadathi1161 The same amount of water will cool down faster in a vessel with a larger diameter because of evaporation
@danielcohn6884
@danielcohn6884 3 ай бұрын
@@LanceHedrickbased on my understanding of physics, you were actually right. In this particular context, since the body of the aeropress is an insulator, we can neglect losses to the plastic/glass and focus on the surface. With volume being equal for both aeropresses, the main difference in thermal stability is determined by the diameter. Since the plastic AeroPress has a larger exposed surface area, more heat will be loaded via evaporation than in the narrower premium.

6:00 in a cylinder the lowest surface to volume ratio is achieved when the height is equal to the diameter. Thus, with the new narrower aero press the column of water will have higher surface area than before for a typical cup.

Yeah, not all plastic is created equal. Saying that the original aeropress is potentially dangerous just because it's made of *a kind* of plastic is basically spreading misinformation. The very first aeropress models were made of a different plastic that could indeed sometimes leach into hot water but for a very long time now they've been using PP which is exceptionally stable and safe at high temps.

Stirrer should have just been a bamboo chopstick also to reduce the thermal loss during the stir as well as reducing the price considerably.

That big heavy stainless steel stir stick will really suck up more temperature if you're trying to brew hot with lighter roasted coffees!

I got an Aeropress XL for Christmas. The coffee tastes SOOO much better than what comes out my formerly favorite French press. HUGE improvement. The Aeropress Premium? Only if you, Lance Hendrick, tell me that the coffee tastes better. Otherwise, no, not even if it arrives under the Christmas tree.

About the thermal mass and surface area. Larger diameter will have a larger volume to SA ratio, whereas a smaller diameter will have a larger surface area per given volume.

I like the idea of the glass and metal and no plastic. Maybe it will make companies that make other devices see if plastic can be reduced/eliminated where it touches water and coffee.

I think it could make a good companion to a normal aeropress, I use mine for travel so this doesn't seem practical for that, but for use at home I quite like how it looks. What's the blue and brass espresso machine behind you? Looks absolutely amazing

Lance really is the Vsauce of coffee. It’s also a shame they didn’t release a metal flow control cap *thats included* .

I hope you don't mind me saying, super well done on the weight loss 👏 [Lance, not the aeropress] I know it takes a lot of discipline
