I did, once. Not quite burned but did spill coffee on my hands. I got the habit of squeezing out the air gap while using the inverted method (hard to explain, draw yourself a mental picture :) ), and there's almost no resistance if you haven't yet put on the filter cap thing. So one tiny push and your hand slips all the way down and suddenly your coffee is airborne! Only happened once.

I wouldn't say unfounded. Everybody's different. If you do it properly, it's not dangerous. Some people get flummoxed or are careless. Or they didn't quite understand how to do it. Obviously, the manufacturer will advise people not to use the inverted method because if even 1 out of 20 customers are bad at it or are careless, that's a lot of hot coffee being spilled and a lot of people getting splashed and burned. I wouldn't tell anyone to use the inverted method without demonstrating it first and even walking them through it.

Can confirm. The volume of a cylinder is pi*r^2*h. The same volume of coffee used in both would mean that the height of the cylinder with a 5cm radius would be 36/25 times the height of the 6cm cylinder, or 1.44 times taller.

Great Video as always. One small detail.. The thermal stability is higher for bigger diameters (ignoring the material), because the surface grows with 2*pi*r and the volume by r^2 (which grows faster). You said it the other way around. That's why Polar bears are bigger than Brown bears..
@LanceHedrick3 ай бұрын
good catch! Definitely said the wrong way lol
@varunprasadathi11613 ай бұрын
curious with that logic - if that's the case, why does a bigger pot of water cool down much faster than a narrower cup of water (given the same amount of liquid in both)?
@timonsku3 ай бұрын
you can't ignore the material, if the double walled glas insulates better than the plastic then the spot where you have the most heat exchange is where you have contact with the free air, that contact surface is smaller. Thermals are complex, you can't break it down with just volume comparison without considering the environment.
@Phil_OG3 ай бұрын
@@varunprasadathi1161 The same amount of water will cool down faster in a vessel with a larger diameter because of evaporation
@danielcohn68843 ай бұрын
@@LanceHedrickbased on my understanding of physics, you were actually right. In this particular context, since the body of the aeropress is an insulator, we can neglect losses to the plastic/glass and focus on the surface. With volume being equal for both aeropresses, the main difference in thermal stability is determined by the diameter. Since the plastic AeroPress has a larger exposed surface area, more heat will be loaded via evaporation than in the narrower premium.
