I hope this video on the Aeropress Premium, Aeropress's newest release, was helpful! It's been fun to play with, but in the end, it is a $150 aeropress. Something I neglected to mention in the video is it is a bit easier to plunge in this, likely due to the lower coefficient of friction glass has than the plastic. And perhaps the more narrow tube. Anyway, if you enjoyed, consider hitting the like and subscribe!

I did, once. Not quite burned but did spill coffee on my hands. I got the habit of squeezing out the air gap while using the inverted method (hard to explain, draw yourself a mental picture :) ), and there's almost no resistance if you haven't yet put on the filter cap thing. So one tiny push and your hand slips all the way down and suddenly your coffee is airborne! Only happened once.

I wouldn't say unfounded. Everybody's different. If you do it properly, it's not dangerous. Some people get flummoxed or are careless. Or they didn't quite understand how to do it. Obviously, the manufacturer will advise people not to use the inverted method because if even 1 out of 20 customers are bad at it or are careless, that's a lot of hot coffee being spilled and a lot of people getting splashed and burned. I wouldn't tell anyone to use the inverted method without demonstrating it first and even walking them through it.

Great Video as always. One small detail.. The thermal stability is higher for bigger diameters (ignoring the material), because the surface grows with 2*pi*r and the volume by r^2 (which grows faster). You said it the other way around. That's why Polar bears are bigger than Brown bears..

curious with that logic - if that's the case, why does a bigger pot of water cool down much faster than a narrower cup of water (given the same amount of liquid in both)?
@timonsku
@timonsku 4 күн бұрын
you can't ignore the material, if the double walled glas insulates better than the plastic then the spot where you have the most heat exchange is where you have contact with the free air, that contact surface is smaller. Thermals are complex, you can't break it down with just volume comparison without considering the environment.

@@varunprasadathi1161 The same amount of water will cool down faster in a vessel with a larger diameter because of evaporation
@danielcohn6884
@danielcohn6884 4 күн бұрын
@@LanceHedrickbased on my understanding of physics, you were actually right. In this particular context, since the body of the aeropress is an insulator, we can neglect losses to the plastic/glass and focus on the surface. With volume being equal for both aeropresses, the main difference in thermal stability is determined by the diameter. Since the plastic AeroPress has a larger exposed surface area, more heat will be loaded via evaporation than in the narrower premium.

Can confirm. The volume of a cylinder is pi*r^2*h. The same volume of coffee used in both would mean that the height of the cylinder with a 5cm radius would be 36/25 times the height of the 6cm cylinder, or 1.44 times taller.

Yeah, not all plastic is created equal. Saying that the original aeropress is potentially dangerous just because it's made of *a kind* of plastic is basically spreading misinformation. Ah yes titanium, about half as heavy than Aluminium at best to retain similar strength and minimum sensible machineable material thickness, and several times more expensive ands harder to manufacture. Tiotanium feels fantastic but it is a ridiculously pointless choice for all but the most demanding applications. Aluminium is fantastic and good enough. A 300 euro Aeropress won't sell.
@inegleit
@inegleit 3 күн бұрын
@@ABDLLHSDDQI I guess you're right about the price, yet there is a company that sells bicycle bottles lined with a sheet of titanium that sell at about 40 bucks, which is just about double the price of a full plastic "premium" bottle while offering a significantly longer life-cycle than the plastic ones. Also, wouldn't its thermal conductivity be a non-starter for an aluminium version? I'm not claiming that an overpriced titanium gadget that offers minimum added value to the product itself would sell or be reasonable in any way, just that it would be sick. The silliness of those sorts of products hasn't stopped companies in other sectors to produce them anyway, even if only as a concept, a show-piece or for people who like and can afford to splurge on their hobby.

Anyone who's seriously worried about a stable plastic shedding microplastics into hot water/food doesn't understand that our bodies are already riddles with microplastics, and we're constantly consuming more in every single medium that enters our bodies, _including distilled water_ . It's like if someone during the leaded fuel crisis thought that wearing a medical mask outside would prevent lead from entering their body; *it just doesn't work that way* . All that said, it doesn't change that this particular product is pretty neat and is just aesthetically beautiful.

@@TheWhiteDragon3 of course boiling water won't remove them. But there are many water filtration systems that definitely remove microplastics, it's not an insurmountable issue. As someone who uses the Aeropress as my main brewer (I'm too impatient to do V60s that often, sorry), initially I saw this as pretty silly given the price, but seeing the build quality I have to say I get it. I kind of doubt I'll be buying one (it's expensive, and honestly I drop my Aeropress too often to fully trust this), but it *might* be my next coffee splurge after I recover from my ongoing overture into espresso. We'll see - it won't be any time soon, at the very least.

If it were closer to $70, I'd consider it. $150 is tough when I've got several non-plastic brewers.

Love seeing you a) with that awesome hair cut! (pretty sure it's written in ancient stone Lance Hedrick always look good) b) using the Pietro. Always great when people use their own/participated products not because they get money from it (which is valid, too), but because it's a great product. And lastly c) Being honest about your reviews. What a great time to be alive to learn from you. Your videos wrap up enough to become more knowledgeable than most baristas know about coffee. Love. It!

Just some extra information on the material composition here: Rubber may not be a hard plastic but it is still a kind made of the same family of polymers. Not sure what kind of rubber this is, it may well be a naturally derived product which will biodegrade faster than your standard plastic, but dollars to donuts it's a petroleum derived rubber. While it may degrade faster than plastic, it will still likely be leeching microplastics as it's used. In fact, the majority of microplastics detectable in nature are from the rubber used in car-tires. Less plastic is always better, but in vacuum-based products like this it's probably inescapable. If you're trying to avoid plastics, the chemex/v60 is a good plastic free option and if you want more of the 'almost esspresso' flavor of an aero-press, there are also moka pots with a very similar workflow and flavor but of course those have rubber gaskets in them. That being said, I'm a hobbyist not a professional materials engineer so any experts feel free to weigh in with constructive criticism.

I think it could make a good companion to a normal aeropress, I use mine for travel so this doesn't seem practical for that, but for use at home I quite like how it looks. What's the blue and brass espresso machine behind you? Looks absolutely amazing

Please advise: using great coffee - would it be better to use a bad, cheap hand grinder and grind fresh, or just buy pre-ground ?

Weird to say something like the metal cap is "heavy as lead" instead of whatever actual material it is, I assume steel or maybe aluminum. I say weird mostly because you also don't want lead to be in contact with acidic food and drink or you'll become like Denethor and eat your tomatoes like a weirdo because you eat off pewter plates.

Now give us an XL version. I usually brew 450ml water in, so this thing would only be useful for milk drinks brewed at stronger ratios

I think if I was going to use an Aeropress as an at-home everyday brewer I'd think about picking it up (which I did for a while), just because I really don't like the feel of the traditional Aeropress plastic. That said I really don't think switching to a non-plastic brewer is going to make a huge difference to the amount of microplastics in your body given how ubiquitous they are in the environment.
