I think I might be able to repair the pully with care as *bronze type flame repair with flux rod. Understanding the outer radius might be difficult if existing damage or heat process repair cause distortion. I have resorted to ebay for some small parts and continue to study best upgrade as to my SB 9C. It's SN 62016. I traded a day and a half of fitter work for the lathe, stored outside and where I have cleaned and repaired to basic functions. I find I so like it's useful component as to my workshop. I watch Max Grant's Swan Valley channel and have gained real insight to repair some of the features. Watching with interest and delighted to see your new machines in progress. Regards, McGary

I purchased the same Craftsman tool boxes you have in 1980, my 2nd yr a machinist.

How did they compare in cost to the Kennedy? I always assumed the Sears were just rebadged, but I was recently told that Kennedy didn't make them..
@forrestgumpv9049 Жыл бұрын
@secondarymachine7521 the roll around was $200 in 1980, Kennedy was $350. Top box $75 and middle box $65. Kennedy were twice that.

How are you working in that closed room with an open flame fire? Don’t you have a CO issue? Or how are you ventilating the place? Just curious! :)

Super drafty and I don't run it for long periods of time. No big deal..

Makes sense. My dad does the same with his big kerosene burner and I make fun of him that one day he’s gonna pass out not knowing it if he doesn’t keep the doors open!

I changed my motor for a 3/4 hp the original motor was struggling can the cracked wheel be welded maybe get you by until the new one arrives.

The crack isn't a big deal, but the shaft is now so far out of true that the belt wouldn't likely stay on. I'll wait it out and work on other projects..

You can tap the spindle out with a mallet after you loosen the bolts. The spindle isn’t held in by the bearings it is actually some what press fit onto the bull gear, there is also a key on the bull gear and spindle. When you put the spindle in the key has to line back up.
@secondarymachine7521 Жыл бұрын
It will be interesting to see how tight the press fit is. By the look of it, this spindle hasn't been out since new in 1952. I'd much rather pull it out that tap on it..

You said you'd be without a lathe, I thought this was a second shop and you had a main shop setup with machines.

I just sold off the large lathe and Knee mill from the other shop..

It’s interesting you mention 1/2 Hp isn’t enough on the SB. I had a long bed version of your lathe and it was equipped with the 1/2Hp which I found adequate for this lathe. Maybe you’re used to using bigger tooling on your old lathe? There’s not that much cast iron around the headstock unlike the Boxford (which I own) or Hercus which are better suited to a 3/4 or 1Hp.
@secondarymachine7521 Жыл бұрын
I think it is possible that I never was getting a full 1/2hp out of it. You can see it struggle with even a .025" cut in aluminum.

Interesting that youtube removed my subscription from your channel... That`s some bullshit my dude... It ain`t the first time that that has happened to me, i subscribed to project farm channel like 7 times by now and somehow i constantly get unsubbed by yt... It ain`t funny... Also, glad to see that the only damage is the pulley... A shame definitely, I too would hate myself over it, but like that would be a drastic change from the usual state... Tho, why not try brazing it? Just get a zip disc, grind through the crack, use a burr to massacre the surface a bit and give her a go with the torch or two... One to heat up the area with propane and a small torch with oxy setup to locally blast the required area to brazing temperatures... Sil.bro. brazing should suffice... You even have those flux filled brazing sticks that generally do a great job... I`ve made quite a few custom lathe tools from large old carbide inserts which then got diamond ground by hand into custom trepanning or similar groove cutting tools on machined chunks of mild steel... Now sure, brazing a large chunk of carbide aint filling a large spoke crack that was ground through with 50 thou clearance, but if you prep the area and flux it thoroughly and use a flux filled stick, i think you should get a solid joint that if left to cool in a kitchen oven at say 250C and gradually brought down to room temp, should result in a stable, high grade repair that should not induce any wobble in the poor thing and will if nothing give you a spare pulley... All the best and kind regards! Steuss

I sometimes find that I am no longer subbed to channels that I should still be subbed on. Not sure why. Just subbed your channel and was watching some of your videos. I can't say no to a good deal on a machining tool...looks like maybe we are the same in that regard..

@@secondarymachine7521 Thank you! Hope you find the stuff pleasing and interesting... As said in the last vid, i`ll have to build a new shop before really digging in to restorations and such, but hopefully that comes along in a hurry... Regarding subbing and losing subs, that I can`t even explain, but i`ve been noticing that for a long while now... Especially on channels that don`t really fit the advertiser friendly criteria... I won`t be getting into ``conspiracy`` speculations, but it really isn`t funny, because whoever makes videos, especially in our field, puts a lot of effort into it in more ways than one, so it really should not be happening the way it is... Niche channels have few subs anyways, so any impact on that is quite a nasty thing for the channel ``operator``... Speaking of similarities, i had a short convo with Joe Pie regarding the same thing... It is a specific gift and a set of personal traits that seems to be present in every one of us who feel love and adoration for these marvelous yet heartless beauties... You run across the existence of machines for the first time and you fall in love that does not fade, but only seems to grow over time and with each machine you come across... It really is a rewarding gift to have... All the best and kindest regards! Steuss

This is the reason I have 2 lathes you really need another. Personally I think you made a mistake selling your atlas/craftsman

I'm down to only one lathe set up and running, I do have a small one in storage that needs to got running and another that was my main lathe which is currently for sale and in storage, If I had the space I would keep it for rough work to save the new better machine.

I'm always on the hunt for a good deal, and will likely be restoring another lathe when the right deal pops up.
