Quick tip nobody asked for: If you're booting linux and it's stuck on the logo, you normally can press ESC to see the terminal output to see at what step it stopped booting up. That way you can diagnose what's wrong with it. It's hilarious to me how linus manages to break linux without doing anything, although I have high suspicions that Eurorra fked with this. No way does a handcrafted, 80+ quality assurance steps laptop for $5000 have such blatant issues. The fact that Ubuntu errors basically from the boot up makes me strongly believe so. I believe the "custom" ubuntu simply means "we fked with things" ubuntu. It's hilarious though and seeing linus lose his mind over linux and breaks it whenever he touches it (or not heh) is just great.

Linux experts are the worst. They just can't understand why someone doesn't want to live in terminal and have to keep a spreadsheet with hundreds of linux commands just to play games and type on their computer. Honestly, those people are the reason Linux has never went mainstream.
@isaackvasager9957
@isaackvasager9957 Жыл бұрын
@Clay Gomera you are exactly the type of person that makes everyone hate linux and are a detriment to it's wider acceptence. The line: "But you have to keep in mind that using the terminal in Linux is NOT necessary in any way. Almost everything that you can do in a terminal, is possible in a GUI in some way." is COMPLETE horse s&*t and anyone that has used linux for more than 2 minutes on a new install knows it.
@xxMastufaquxx
@xxMastufaquxx Жыл бұрын
@Clay Gomera I'm a well experience Linux user myself. For casual everyday tasks i agree, the terminal is not needed whatsoever. But when it comes to gaming or getting something professionally up, running, and done, the terminal may end up become a necessity out of various consequences and points of failure. And to an end-user who does not have the care and/or time to figure that out when things can just work on Windows or Mac, there is a clear solution: use Windows or Mac, especially when time is money for major companies to the self-employed. That is why Linux has not (yet) become mainstream, although major improvements are being made everywhere to get to that point one day, and I feel that day is coming soon.
@xxMastufaquxx
@xxMastufaquxx Жыл бұрын
@Clay Gomera yeah maybe becoming mainstream is a stretch but i do feel its becoming easier to use every day without the need for terminal use or configuring files, despite fragmentation. Many distro devs are working super hard to tightly integrate everything while keeping it cross compatible and modular. Also true on the gaming part, its relatively easy to install and run games but thats assuming everything else like drivers are set up and youre not unlucky. I have a Steam Deck and there’s honestly no issues getting non-steam games added and running with Heroic and Lutris (i just wish Amazon games had a launcher.)The distro you pick can heavily determine your quality of life too but sometimes you wont know which one that is until you’ve hopped several times.

NVidia support is lacking in most cases as they just provide the bare minimum to get a display output unless you are running a business grade GPU, and configuration can be a pain unless you want to learn how to use the terminal. For more information about what’s going on, please see this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4fTgKyBeLONj9k Current/Modern-Day AMD-Radeon graphics-cards or 1990s nVidia-GeForce graphics-cards both work-well in Linux.

@@reoencarcelado5904 I am acutely aware of the issues NVidia has with Linux. That is what I was trying to convey in my comment is that NVidia does not provide much support for Linux, just the bare minimum to have a (mostly) functional desktop experience. I didn't realize how bad the issue really was though until I tried to use VR on Linux, and it just crashes every single time it tries to render a frame. Had I realized just how bad the issues with NVidia on Linux can be, I would have gone AMD despite the fact I would have been downgrading my card, or paying more at the time I bought my computer. I will say that NVidia open sourcing the kernel side drivers is a nice step in the right direction, but in comparison to what AMD does for Linux, it isn't much

14:00 segment: I've had this sort of issues with laptop GPUs all the time (except back in the Core2Duo switchable GPU of the Lenovo T400 with ATI), The reason is because a lot of laptop manufacturers don't actually use a true switchable GPU solution, that is, the dGPU is essentially like plugging a GPU into the PCIe slot then plugging the monitor into the motherboard VGA and expecting a performance boost, because that's exactly what that is. Games were later designed for this "GPU as a mere co-processor" configuration and games old enough cough up blood at these configurations that is modern laptops' "dGPU". Usually the games need the driver to report dGPU support to use the dGPU as a co-processor dangling off the side of the PCIe headlessly. So full GPUs don't get reported as supported and thus doing laptop-style dGPU on a desktop, whilst possible with the correct programming, doesn't happen (seemingly intentional). It would be easier if some laptop manufacturer somewhere actually used a DisplayPort multiplexer and literally switched from CPU iGPU DisplayPort to dGPU DisplayPort... To get around eDP not wanting to work with normal DP, using a basic 1-to-1 monitor chipset with all features stripped out so to leave the pixel data untouched would be simple enough to implement.... This would make for the ultimate laptop that would have 100% desktop performance given decent cooling. How I know this stuff? I looked at enough schematics, went back and forth to CEX trying to find a true switchable graphics laptop (so I can use the "return in 14 days" to test every laptop and get my money back... because I'm cheap like that.)

Granted, that was like 7-10 years ago, hopefully it's a bit better now, but at least half of the reason I put an AMD GPU in my current system was sheer spite over that experience.

Great video as usual! Btw it would be great if you made a video about Honeywell PTM7950. It's a CPU/GPU TIM (thermal pad like Carbonaut or IC Graphite) and reported results I found are very surprising. In many laptops it outperforms high-quality thermal pastes and gets close to liquid metal. Lenovo also supposedly uses it as a stock TIM and when replaced by thermal paste temps get worse. I would love to see your test results!

At first I was a little skeptical about the 250 hours of work for the carbon fiber work. Then I thought well the whole chassis could represent some issues when you're doing custom work and not mass production. Then I realize 250 hours for the screen lip only.... alright. Probably way too many hands in the line of process for it to amass to 250 hours.... I could see 40 hours to get the molding right for the lip and then another 20-30 for making sure the finish product is nice and smooth. But 250 for just a computer screen lid is insane.

So much this. The only thing I can think is the "up to" part is including letting resin set and cure and some like super one off like this one which would take some custom molding and design work but like, sounds like an exaggeration to justify the price when its seemingly the only thing they're really adding to the laptops they source from Clevo. Don't get me wrong, I fully understand and support the "lets make a carbon fiber laptop lid because it looks siiiiick" and totally get sourcing them from a company like Clevo makes tons of sense if you just want to mod them and sell them, I just dislike the seemingly big exaggerations like 250 hours and the "we dont think people want mass produced laptops" while selling people a laptop that is, aside from a custom lid, seemingly mass produced.

I challenge Linus to the Ultimate Linux Challenge (for brownie points): Build and use Gentoo Linux on a gaming PC. The challenge is won if and only if Linus can boot and run, say, GTA V, at Ultra-everything at 4K, 144 fps, and try to have his PC hold at that, but dip to no lower than 120 fps minimum, for 1 hour of actual playtime (no benchmarks). Linus has to start with nothing but the PC parts, a USB stick containing an Ubuntu installer (for installing Gentoo, cause I find it easier to use than the official Gentoo bootable “installer”), an Internet connection, and Anthony. Extra points if Linus cosplays as a 90s elementary school kid and Anthony as a big, burly, bearded Dad character.

in power plan options on windows, you can enable "hybrid sleep" which saves your ram to hard disk but doesn't hibernate, so you can close your laptop, pull the battery out, and stick a new one in, and it's just like booting from hibernation. although if they're gonna give you multiple batteries, they should include a dinkier secondary charger to charge the battery, or at least an adapter to convert the adapter to plug directly into the battery. I will die on this hill, it should be required for a laptop to have a removable battery. it's better in every conceivable way with no downsides.

Yeah like there's a big difference between - shipping it as Linux laptop and specifying Anthony should review it as the Linux master of the channel. - and sending it improperly setup and letting Linus the Linux Jinx review it. Instead of sending it with Windows How are we supposed to actually know if it is worth the money when the hardware is so severely hampered by their terrible install that CS:GO at like 100fps is still tearing worse then gas station toilet paper. My impression after this is that it's a terrible laptop with a fancy exterior from a company that doesn't give 2 shits about how their product preforms in a customers hands. Leave the trolling Linus shenanigans to Dbrand. At least when they do it it's actually funny and not cringe and disappointing
