Same here. I am always nervous when I pull a CRT... replacements exist for almost everything else.

Bad luck about the springs, but if there is one thing you did right it was ensuring the shafts were well oiled before jamming them in. :) Great guide on what to avoid and thorough as always, looking forward to the conclusion where I have little doubt you will get this working again.

This is awesome! I reminds me of my Tandon 286 wich i had teared down, assembled with new parts (VGA Graphics, Soundblaster CT2940-> IDE CDrom, 2. Floppy drive, 3MB XMS Card and XTIDE Bios with 1GB CompactFlash) and retrobrighted the outer plastic shell of the case. :)

@@PNPRetro Maybe... Surprisingly, after so many years, the power supply still has such good values. In order to check that, I sent the power supply to someone who is familiar with something like this and has the appropriate equipment. After I got the power supply back I exchanged the stock fan for a Noctua NF - A8 FLX. Now the 286 is practically inaudible 😅

You want to discharge the crt first thing before doing anything else before you get a nasty shock.

I absolutely did that. I didn't want to provide a tutorial on how to do the discharge, because I'd hate for someone to follow my advice and end up hurt. But I safely connected the contact under the suction tube to ground before I dug into it, just wasn't filming at the time.

@@PNPRetro I was a service tech back when these were out. Some of them can pack a nasty punch or trigger a heart attack if the energy travels the wrong way. Be safe people.

@@chrisyannella8682 I can't imagine how many people must have zapped themselves trying to self service these back in the days before easily accessible internet guides. I probably would have zapped myself if not for having watched so many videos of people doing restores.

I'd agree, you are not an expert when it comes to discharging CRT's... (unless it was to bait the comments section !) An enjoyable video all the same ;-)

Let's just say it was my second time discharging it :) and the tool I used was insulated at the hand and also grounded. I just never want to give advice that gets someone hurt, even if the advice is sound.
