A year later: Dell 7810 Dual CPU workstations are $120 on eBay. Actually the 2696 is a higher end CPU than the 99. $50 on eBay as of this comment. 32GB sticks of DDR4 EEC memory are $40 ea. So a 36 core, dual CPU workstation with 256GB of memory for > $400. Then add in whatever storage or video card you want. That era of chipset can boot from PCIe so a NVMe drive on a $10 PCIe adapter card is do-able for super fast storage.

I recently bought a 2nd hand items as Machinist x99 (PR9) and Xeon E5-2699v3 for 100 euros. Previous owner mentioned that previous setup with these items were set to 8 cores only visible due power issues with that motherboard. As I watched your video (part 2) I noticed under voltage option to be key feature to have all 18 cores to run at the same time (with set 3.66ghz each) - I thought if this might be the "power issues" with my setup now..? I haven't been able to test this setup yet as I lack perfect case yet, will have suitable shipped to me next week from now on - I can post my achievements and notes about the process here later on :)

I have two X99 platform Xeon rigs. One is an ASRock X99 E5 2699 V4 (22c 44t) w128GB of RAM, the other is an Asus X99 Deluxe with an E5 2683 V4 (16c 32t). I've been playing around with Xeons & X99 for a couple of years now. ASRock boards will allow use of more RAM with the V4's. Asus boards seem to be limited to 64 GB with either V3 or V4 Xeons. The ASRock boards also have USB C standard (depending upon the mobo) while with Asus you have to use add-in parts. For video transcoding the Xeons barely go above idle temps, my i7 5960X ran close to twice as hot under load with the same cooling with the 2683 V4. The 2699 V4 runs even cooler with identical cooling. It's been my experience that 103.4 BLCK is the highest both rigs will go with 100% stability. I have the 5960X and an E5 2683 V3 14c 28t (my first X99 Xeon CPU) stashed away as spares now. The V3's max out at 2133Mhz RAM, the V4's 2400Mhz. I'm not a gamer so I have no input on them for gaming use but for A/V work the V4's are my choice. I went after Xeon's that had been listed on Ebay for a while and made lowball offers until I got what I wanted for the price I wanted to pay. I also have two Asus Sabertooth X79 rigs with E5 1680 V2's in them running at 4.5Ghz with 64GB of RAM. They never miss a beat in daily use.

Since X99 boards are pretty darn expensive for the vast majority of us, it would be interesting to see how well this chip can be tuned on a Dell or HP or similar machine. Not that you would pair this chip, it would probably be a 14 core 2680 v3, but if we could find a good (tunable) workstation, that would be a treat.

I did the same a few years ago, resurrecting a 2012 Dell, dual Xeon workstation and getting the fastest xeons that would fit in it. But I just bought a Comet Lake (10th gen) gaming PC, and the more current processor will do about 60% more work single threaded or about double the work per core, full load vs. full load. So what adds up to 32 threads of gen 2, e5-2690 only does double the work of 8 threads of gen 10, i5-10300H. At least theoretically according to geekbench scores. The laptop is still on the way so I haven't tested it yet.

0:50 As "Hardware Unboxed" have been testing, larger L3 cache on gaming CPUs is boosting FPS a lot more. We are heading towards the 4K120 Meta soon for gaming, and larger L3 cache is the fix for better FPS on high resolutions. Next Gen CPUs will have some nice double to triple L3 cache sizes, and that will boost performance so much from the CPU side. And rumors are saying that we are about to see +50% on nextgen GPUs, so 4K120 Very High settings is really coming in 2022.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 3 жыл бұрын
Ryzen cache utilisation is better due to the successively tuned perceptron predictor, this small circuit makes up so much of the actual performance difference between Ryzen generations, and Intel is barely clawing its way out of being left years behind in predictor performance. While cache capacity difference between models matters, so does cache utilisation between different processor families. I don't think this system is that great TBH, when it has to contend with a 2700X that you can get the CPU for around the same money and plop on an actually super cheap mainboard that will beat China boards day in day out like it's not even funny. If you need a lot of RAM, that is for sure the saving grace of this build, because you can get large amounts in RDIMM cheaply. Quad channel DDR4 is nice, but again a better predictor not only optimises the cache utilisation, but also the RAM access!

@@SianaGearz They are not bad, just really not for the faint of heart. I “downgraded” from my 9th gen i7 build to dual Xeons (24C48T) to promote my custom PC business (it’s cooled by a triple watercooling loop lol) but since I play at 4K with my 2080Ti, there isn’t much difference at all FPS wise. Games are also becoming more optimized as time goes on and my favorite games are getting more into indie. So for veterans like me, it doesn’t matterthat much...Xeons are still solid builds, and is much better for the environment

The big problem with powerful old gen cpu's are motherboard costs. Not that long ago I ran into a problem when my Z87 mobo gave up the ghost combined with a 4770k. Sourcing a replacement mobo was expensive. I found the most cost effective solution was to sell the cpu and 16gb of HyperX fury DDR3 1866mhz ram. Then buy a Ryzen 3600 with 16gb of 3200mhz crucial Lpx DDR4..The upgrade included an Asrock B550m pro 4 mobo and with the money back from the old parts the cost was neglibable.

I know HP Z440 and Dell Precision T5810 are great due potential upgrades. Speaking of which, you can make a beast on budget: Intel Xeon E5-2690v4(14C28T clocks kinda meh due no OC on those boards) for around 40 Euros from Aliexpress, a case + motherboard + powersupply + cooler from mentioned machines for around 150 Euros in total, a gtx 1080TI for around 130 Euros(keeping pace with 3060 12gb but 50 Euros cheaper, even when set target power to -28% keeping same power draw as the compared card without losing frames). The biggest issue is a total of 128GB ddr4 ECC in up to 8 sticks(either 8x16GB or 4x32GB configuration) for anything in between of 125 Euros to 200 Euros. As for SSD even sata will do...used 1TB for 30 to 60 Euros(with bit of luck M.2 altough you will need an SSD adapter card). That is build for a total 500 to 600 Euros. Ofc a threadripper on a budget will outperform this one, but for twice the money. As playing on this 4000 Euros machine from 2016 due years of depriciation, some niche games still require those specs. For me its is Eve Online with projected 28 clients running at the same time...That is insane even for todays standards when consumer grade CPU gets 8C16T(yikes) not being able to keep up. The idle power draw is rough though, but disabling some cores in msconfig should save on power bills if you dont need those cores. A dual xeon is significantly cheaper processors vise, you will feel the power bill in the longer run however. On the other hand looking for bargains - a used build with threadripper 1920x, 32gb DDR4, GTX 1080TI will cost 600 Euros...no idea on benchmarks in modern titles though.

I love my 5600X build and it is my main PC that I use. But I have a old i5-4690K mated with an MSI Z97-G45 gaming board with an MSI MPG 240mm AIO and I have it clocked at 4.5ghz all core and mated with the MSI Airboost Vega 56 with the 64 bios on it, and it performs within margin of error vs my Ryzen 5 3600 build with a 5600XT in 1080p. And I have about 500 in the whole build. The CPU/MB/Ram cost me about 100, the AIO cost me 50 never used but out of the box, the Vega 56 cost me 200 bucks when I bought it in 2019, and Thermaltake RGB 650 watt psu cost 50. 1 tb hdd was 20 and the 240gb SSD was 20. Case was free and set of fans were roughly another 30. I have about 800 in the whole set up of the R5 3600 setup, and while overall it is better, the 4th gen i5 setup for gaming holds its own rather nicely.

As someone who has done this kind of stuff, keep in mind, there are some cool benefits, AND some SERIOUS drawbacks. For example... Yes, you'll get a bunch of cores for a low price. But more isn't really better, unless you're going to be using them for virtualization and other stuff like that. It won't benefit you in video editing after a certain point. It won't benefit you in gaming after a point, etc etc. You're better off with a lower core count and higher base/boost in the same generation, maybe a 10-ish core (Wikipedia has great charts for all the SKUs). ALSO... Keep in mind that while something like a higher clocked CPU in this generation will still be quite decent, you're still getting pretty old architecture. IIRC, Haswell only has access to 2 lanes for NVMe and some other drawbacks I probably can't think of... Knowing all that, what you're basically getting here is a solid replacement for something like a Ryzen 1st gen processor, but again, those drawbacks are definitely there. So don't be fooled JUST by high core count. A ton of cores just don't benefit an average gamer.

Thanks to you.... I built my E5-2658 V3 (12C/24T) system way back in Spring/2016. At that time.... I wanted to build a system with high-end I7 performance for an AMD price. Ryzen would not exist for another 14+ months. I tried to future-proof my investment as much as possible. I purchased a used E5-2658 ES v3 for $170US, a new ASRock X99 Extreme4 MB for $170US and new 32GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4-2400 for $120US. Not a bad purchase price! So.... I've been waiting for years now for my next CPU upgrade.... Either a 18C or 20C Xeon for under $200US. I decided a long time ago to never pay more than $200US for a CPU. I've watched these 18C and 20C CPUs drop in price from over $1000US in 2016 to under $300US these days. A CPU upgrade is coming soon!!! I think I will be going used Threadripper in the coming years for my next full upgrade.

If you care about gaming more than workstation performance, don't bother. The E5 2699 v3 draws tons of power and generates tons of heat but the uplift over the 2658 v3 is very very minimal for games. You'd actually do better investing $35 in an E5 2640 v3 as that one has much higher single core performance when using turbo boost unlock - the benefit is larger than the extra threads. Otherwise the 2680 might be worth it, but only if you can resell your old one for a good price. Even then, I think you'd be better off just doing a platform upgrade and getting on more recent architecture.

@@b0ne91 Thanks for the reply. I'm an old Net/Sys Admin (30+ years). Linux is my main OS. Gaming is the last thing I think about when building systems. Application performance is the most important thing to me. Hell.... The best GPU I have installed in any system (lately) is a GT-1030. LOL!!! When I rebuilt my system in 2016, I decided to use the 2011v3 MB platform. I thought it would be future-proof for at-least the next decade. But.... I had known that the CPU Price Wars were coming, I most likely would have built this system differently. I hate running bleeding-edge equipment. I generally stay 2 generations behind in PC tech: (1) I'm a cheap bastard and (2) Most OS issues have been resolved for me already. As for gaming.... I do game. Just not recent stuff. Old system game emulators are my speed for the most part. I'm a product of 70's, 80's and 90's arcade generation.

@@b0ne91 On cooling, I'm using a 212 EVO air cooler. Under full load, my E5-2658v3 never gets above 60C. I think this cooler should be able to handle an 18/20C Xeon A-OK. If not, I will get a better air cooler. I stay away from liquid cooling as much as possible. I've seen way too many systems killed by water leaks or pump failures over the years. At least with an air cooler.... If the fan fails, it will still provide some passive-cooling and keep the system from instant Heat-Death. Once there is no-water running the loop in liquid cooled systems, CPU's can die very quickly if the MB can't shut the system down in time.

It's just fantastic to see what kinds of system you can still build on these old X99 platforms! A thought on the subject of these older KW/h guzzlers. Depending on where you live in the world, building a system around a 145W cpu doesn't seem to be such a effecient or practical decision imo. Atleast, not if world prices on natrual gas come down reasonably after past week's price hikes. Most countries link their KW/h price to the price of natural gas. So this 22nm roomheater will also get a more expansive to run, albeit less then heating ones room with tradition radiators.

Its only because I was saw your teaser post (2 days after the video was released) that I got to see this. Just like your comparison to your video editing rig, it would be nice to see some comparisons to more modern chips with the 1080ti. I can imagine for newer games that are good at spreading the load across so many cores the xeon will be good, but I think there will be some bottlenecking. I notice in the bit of gameplay footage you showed the gpu was no where near 100% utilised, but that may have just been because they were easy to play games.
