In this episode, I design and build my own device that reminds to complete 6 tasks each day. Each flick on the switch is accompanied by a tiny boost in dopamine. Inspired by @simonegiertz "The Everyday Calendar" but with 6 reminders instead of one.
The full code, CAD and illustrator files as well as the schematic for the electronics can be found here: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

I actually did something similar a few years ago to get out of depression and it is my number 1 weapon against it since. My daily feelgood-list reads the following: 1. Do something for fitness (30 min) 2. Do something for your body (shower, bath, special cream, you get it) 3. Do something for your mind (read something, solve a puzzle) 4. Do something for your creativity (draw something little in 5 minutes, write something, write down an idea for something new) 5. Do something for your home (clean up, repair something...) 6. Do something for your future self (cook in advance, do something you dont like now instead of tomorrow, allow your future self to sleep 30 minutes longer)

@Rhapsody_Sky
@Rhapsody_Sky 3 жыл бұрын
@@HHansii Yes do it :) Just dont be to harsh to your self and set your goals to high. Start really small. As soon as you even did something for a minute you are allowed to tick it in the first 2 weeks. And while you are doing something on the list... why not adding a few more minutes to it? You will see it becomes more easy every day. And because you become fitter and your flat/house becomes cleaner over time you will automatically start to feel better :) Good Luck, I believe in you !

you do these everyday? it seems like I only have time for all these during the weekends
@Rhapsody_Sky
@Rhapsody_Sky 3 жыл бұрын
@@joesr31 the key is to set little goals. You cleaned your room for 10 minutes? tick it. You made your hair look nice today? tick it. You wrote down 3 quick ideas for strange fantasy creatures in 5 minutes? tick it. It is not about the amount of things you do but that you do them. You dont have to invest a huge amount of time into it. But you will notice that once you start you will keep going longer and longer. From a "ok I clean my kitchen for 10 minutes now" you maybe finish it completely. From a little scribble you may develop and ok drawing over time. And the longer you do things the better it gets. But really start very small. Its ok to do so. Cleaning your home for 10 minutes a day is 70 minutes in the end of the week. Thats better then not even starting.

Thank you Mike Boyd for helping me be more productive in my life. Heres a bit of backstory for people who want to know more. My family of 4 is very unorganized and cramped into a small house the first floor/basement isn't finished so it cuts our square foot down in half. The house is in constant turmoil because no one wants to help out. I decided to start working out after finding your channel and it made me feel better about myself and helped my self esteem. Then the coronavirus happen and I wanted to do something productive I said to myself "ill make my bed every day". And that eventually turned into ill clean my room every day. Now this video came out and I look at his to do list for every day and I replicated it. I have cleaned my house for 30 minutes to an hour every day and that has made my house much cleaner in return. Everyone in my family feels better and is more kind to one another now. Even though I'm the one who is doing the most in the house it has made me feel better not above anyone but grounded like you said in the video. So thank you so much for this video because it has made me more productive as a person and as a contributing member of my household and making my entire family better overall. I wish the best to you and you family.

@TaylorTheOtter
@TaylorTheOtter 3 жыл бұрын
Colorado Animatronics or you could get a little sound module. A raspberry pi is of course an option but it's a little overkill and from my experience usually more of a hassle. Technically speaking the Arduino can do audio by itself in some interesting ways. Even the attiny's can do audio. It's just a bit harder since you usually need to make a chip/series specific implementation. If you don't mind not using a sample, you can make it synthesize fairly complex sounds pretty easily, especially if you don't mind programming it in pure C without the Arduino library.

@@sei20 I used to type 80-90 as well on average, but for my school, typing was temporarily a core class. My teacher made everyone take a free online typing course on this website called "typing.com" since you type fast, it may seem tedious at first, but it really helps with both mental and muscle memorization. After taking the entire course, I could type a 100wpm average and a 114 max. My accuracy jumped up to a 96% average, and I only misspell only about 3 times on 500 word essays. I recommend also taking time to learn to type spontaneously with grammar as well. Games such as typeracer are good at reinforcing your typing skills.

@@modders12 Before calling others idiots you may want to do some research. Many of the recreational drugs are addictive specifically because they interact with the dopamine pathway. Cocaine for example inhibits dopamine reuptake so your brain has more flooding around, ecstasy releases a sudden surge of dopamine (and serotonin). Illicit substances don't have a magical ability to interact with the brain in a new way, they hijack existing systems - dopamine being a very common one. Also DMT is both a naturally occurring chemical and a recreational drug, the two aren't mutually exclusive.

I love the idea behind this project! It's very easy to see a task on a phone or tablet, then close the device and forget about it. Having a physical reminder that you see all day is awesome. I have a couple of ideas, some sourced from comments already made ( I've only read a few). The outer design of the box could easily be improved by using bended sheet metal, and having the seam be welded in the bottom rear edge; as well as on the top, back and bottom of the sides. Having the battery placed on the very bottom in the front on the inside would compensate for the weight lost by using sheet metal, while also using less resistant switches that still click. Small rubber feet on the bottom would help as well; mainly on glass, ceramic and polished stone surfaces. A light sensing or even timer based dimmer for the LEDs would be a good addition to reduce brightness at night (or a manual dial for brightness). As seen in other comments a small speaker could be wired in and play a short sound for each task, and a short tune for completing all of them.

It's funny how it's easier for Mike to go down the route of using an Arduino instead of building one of the simplest electronic circuits imaginable. There's nothing wrong with that solution it's just hilariously a over-engineered haha! Using a whole computer to read the switch state and output something instead of just using the switch as... a switch. Lol. Edit: could actually be a cool future project to learn some electronics and build a circuit. You can design PCBs in cad to be made up or use protoboards.

I have 6 Rubik's cubes of different sizes, 2x2-7x7. When I need to do chores, I assign each chore to a "reward cube", and scramble the cube. I try to make the size of the cube correspond to the size of the task. Doing the dishes is usually a 3x3, an hour of workout is a 7x7, etc. I cannot solve the cube until the associated task is complete. Each solve produces dopamine, and the last one of the day is super satisfying. It really bugs me to see the unsolved cube on my desk, and it acts as a progress bar for my day. It also is a reminder system. "Have I done my math homework? The 4x4 is unsolved, I still need to do math"
Tired of getting robbed... So I built this.
