The Pacific Federation of Project Wingman right? If so I somewhat disagree. I feel saturation is more of the Federation's tactic than a large superweapon plane. I think they'd go for faster and more well armed airships not too dissimilar from what they have now rather than one make or break airship like this.

Super-sized aircraft would likely actually be flying boats - calm day is all they'd need to have a massive, very well-supporting landing strip. This'd still need either pontoons or similar structures to sit in the water, but once it kicks into high enough speed it'd get grabbed by the ground air effect boosting it out of the water. Also, that AWACS dish would probably sit way further forward or be on a taller leg to avoid the prop noise on screen, similar to how the E-2 Hawkeye has to mount its dish quite high to avoid prop noise. Funny design, though, and you put quite a lot of thought into it.

For the parasite aircraft SHOULD have some type of landing gear, whether to be moved about the flying hanger (depending on the in flight systems), but more importantly, in the case of an emergency landing. They doesn’t have to be much, just enough to safely land the pilot and preferably not damage a runway if they have to divert (something like a glider’s gear; two stationary wheels or one and a skid plate with maybe wing tip wheels as well).
@erictheepic5019
@erictheepic5019 Жыл бұрын
Another advantage of putting gear on the parasite fighters would be that the carrier could have a reduced takeoff run, perhaps being able to takeoff from a normal-length runway without JATO. It would takeoff as empty as possible (meaning no parasite fighters in the bays, no fuel, munitions, other supplies, etc.) and all that would be flown up to it after it's already in the air. Because of the nuclear reactors, it *does* have basically infinite loiter time, after all. Because of how risky takeoff and landing are (especially for an aircraft of this size), it would make sense for it to stay in the air for many months or perhaps years at a time, similar to actual aircraft carriers or nuclear submarines. They too require resupply, but they don't always go back to port to do this, instead relying on auxiliary ships to resupply them. I imagine that aircraft with similar roles may be designed and employed in the upkeep of the carrier, making the mid-air resupply immediately after takeoff a lot less unusual.

@@jackvearncombe9892 I don't think countermeasures would work in such a huge plane, also evasive maneuvers wouldn't be an option, I think. I think you'd have to go with active measures, or be outside the enemy's range, or have AWACS/interceptors work like the f14 was supposed to, with the aim54
@malusignatius
@malusignatius Жыл бұрын
A small quibble about the AWACs function: Given how low the radome is, you're going to get blind-spots from the vertical stabilisers, particularly the ones on the wings, and the hull itself )meaning that you'd have a minimum detection range on the radar, particularly when dealing with low-flying targets). However, given how massive the aircraft is, you could circumvent this by installing the radar system in pods on the wing tips instead of the central disc, or depending on how advanced your electronics are, even flat-panel electronically scanning arrays like in the AEGIS system installed on the hull. Like I said, it's a fairly minor detail, but it was something I noticed.

What an incredible build!! The shape of the fuselage looks very nice, and I love how thick the wing roots are, gives the whole thing a general sense of beastliness. The twin boom tail is also a nice choice for this kind of aircraft, as it does provide a little more lift and control to an extent. The cockpit design is awesome too, it gives a sheer sense of scale for the rest of the aircraft since you know there’s people inside the cockpit, and it looks so small by comparison. I like that you mentioned games like SimplePlanes and KSP, while Flyout’s graphics do seem to be better than those two, I’d argue that there is a little more creative freedom to be had with SimplePlanes and KSP, seeing how, just from watching you create this and how your PC struggled to render it, larger builds and/or more complex builds don’t seem to sit as well with Flyout. Which is a shame really, but considering it’s still early access and not available to the public yet, I’m sure the devs will get right to optimization and overall better performance with larger creations. Being a SimplePlanes player myself, I’ll be one of the first to admit that the flight model of SP is not the most realistic, but that certainly doesn’t take away from the fun of the game, you can make some batshit ridiculous stuff there. Speaking of flying aircraft carriers, I myself have built one as well in SP, with a wingspan of 6,250ft, and a weight of 20 million lbs unloaded, 30 million fully loaded. It doubles as an aerial attack carrier as well, fitted with hundreds of AA Missile batteries, AA Gun Turrets, RailCannons, and even small bomb bays. It is a testament to how ridiculous SimplePlanes can get. If you ever plan on building another flying aircraft carrier, I’d recommend building it to take off from and land on water, just because it provides your aircraft with so that more space to move, and it’s generally easier to land as well. Happy flying! From a fellow flight enthusiast and flying aircraft carrier connoisseur.

in my mind, i see this aircraft staying airborne 24/7 and only landing to replace its fuel rods. to this end you might need two things a COD aircraft (COD: Carrier Onboard Delivery- a carrier capable cargo aircraft to onload/offload crew and supplies/food/mail) the second thing is CIWS turrets (radar guided Gatling guns for last ditch defense). also usually carriers launch off all their aircraft which then return to their home airfields when the carrier is returning to its home port, because of this, you might want to keep the landing gear on the parasite aircraft.

Put in it such a nuclear reactor that shooting it down will create a super Chernobyl, in this case simply no one could afford shooting it down.

100 aircraft is ambitious. Cannot wait to see this build. Gerald Ford Class is around 75-80 aircraft. Would have started with something like 50 which is still ridiculously ambitious. Lets see where this goes. I would like to have seen a bit more ambitious rear hull and tail design. Somehow attach the twin boom to the main wings to keep the middle open. That would allow a rear opening for aircraft to land back onto the plane. Top of the rear hull could slide forward to allow planes to drop down onto the deck like an aircraft carrier. Move landed aircraft below to hangars and to be dropped from bombay launch mechanism. Would not need much runway since planes would be basically in VTOL to touch down at same flight speed as their normal flying. You said you had 8 reactors on the plane which seems like a lot of excess weight compared to 1 larger one that can supply the power needed for the 16 engines. If that is too large, then 2 larger reactors to get the power for all the engines. Maintaining 8 reactors seems like a lot of extra personel needed.

I don't know how realistic this game or whatever is, but taking a turboprop airplane anywhere above Mach 0.8 would be absolute insanity as that's where you are going into transsonic flight and you're probably gonna blow everything up. Even 0.7 would probably be too fast for turboprops but that's based on my knowledge of compressible aerodynamics.

All those turboprops! This would be the loudest man-made vehicle ever. Louder than the Saturn V.

Just a thing: irl most of a wing's lift force is generated by its upper part, to put the engine nacelles there you lower the wings efficency.

A flying platform is surprisingly easy (in my opinion). Ships deal with dangerous water, while planes just need TWR above 1.0

Flying aircraft carriers actually existed. Though back in the day they were known as “blimps” or “zeppelins”. They had fighters that could be launched underneath, and even redocked! There’s also plane launched fighters, but they could obviously only hold a few at most, and couldn’t redock. There was also a plan for an aircraft launching submarine from Japan way back in WW2.

Awesome build, really enjoyed it. As for your issue with docking the parasite planes back with the mother ship, how about a in-tow system similar to that of the in air refueling system, but instead of refueling, it would latch on and hoist the parasit plane back into the bay and store it in place. On system per plane, that way each plane can be launched and retrieve by its own in-tow system. Anyway, it is just a thought.

It would be cool if you could create a primarily awacs variant of this where the parasitic fighter bays are replaces with equipment to work a giant radar system mounted on the aircraft.

Did anyone else see the orange blast wave under the plane a minute or so after the drop tanks were jettisoned? Who needs fighters or nukes? Just drop two gigantic drop tanks filled with fuel! Job done.

One thing I like is Project Wingman's take on large aircraft. They land and take off on water. Would make sense. If you can find still water. Then you pretty much have a cost free airfield. Without the time it takes to construct one as well. I can't imagine how big an on land airfield would have to be for this plane. Edit: The idea though of there being one giant plane in the sky. Hasn't touched ground in years. Requiring all personnel, food, and water to be supplied by arial restocking. Sounds like something you could see in a dystopian world still roaming the sky 100's of years after civilization ended.

Might be interesting to add "on the flight refuel" and "on the flight rearm" capabilities. When the airplane is already powered by nuclear power, you can add laser point defense - if not, even canon CWISes are handy. Sugesting broadening of the flight wing. No transport/cargo airplanes, no AWACS like planes for prolonging the sensor vision of command - both such airplanes will be needed - first for "marines" attacks and materiel aquiring, second for more effective command.

The Soviets did actually fly a nuclear powered jet as a proof of concept (and they heard the Americans were working on it). They solved the weight issue by using minimal shielding. The flight crew didn't have great long term health outcomes.
