I would swap the hellfires for APKWS rockets, as you get 7 per tube at the same weight as a hellfire.

I think that the stealth A-10 would make the it more effective because then the A-10 would have to worry about air defense less compared to its modern counterpart so it would be more efficient at being a CAS aircraft which is its primary job

Love it. I've considered a similar design, but my approach was more "how do we work the design approach & best elements of the A-10 into a 5th generation fighter?" I think it makes sense. You can't assume you'll be in control of the airspace, but you need a plane focused on closely-supporting actions on the ground. thewhitefolder.blogspot.com/2019/10/af-x-thunderbolt-iii-5th-generation-cas.html

That said, A-10 was designed to be an expendable tank-killer to stave off a soviet invasion, where as anything stealthy is going to be expensive, limited in number, and deployed cautiously (to complement missiles and drones)... so very different.

9:12 there is also the problem that large radar frequencies can travel fully around a sphere and right back towards the radar. Thats why the f-35 have the lip, the waves hit that and disperse.

I don't remember Bo choosing to have all those flaws in the planes design, just sayin'. I'm' sure Bo has plans for remedying those issues in the C and E models of the plane. Seriously that design looks awesome. The thing I've found about cats, as my cats also helps me with decisions sometimes, is they will make decisions because they like it, or think it's cool. And ultimately, that is what matters to them. That plane looks amazing and no matter what flaws it has, it is awesome. I hope you keep this series going!

As much as people hate to admit it, the A10 is a morale support device, gulf war the F15 got more ground kills but the A10 is more famous because they knew it was there, rather than thousands of feet up dropping ordinance.

The A10 is ground support and anti-armor. It can take a lick and still get home. You cant compare an A10 to fighters. You can compare it to an AH64 Apache or even an AC130. Hence A in their designation. The A10 is so good it gets compared to other categories but not its own.

3:55 this is actually a thing. Project pluto with the SLAM missile, tested in 1954. An absolute unit of a missile that uses an UNSHIELDED NUCLEAR REACTOR for thrust, basically using the nuclear energy to heat up the air for propulsion. It would fly 500 feet off the ground at mach 3, instantly killing nearby victims with the shockwave alone. It would also irradiate anything it flew over and had a range of 113,000 miles (no there isint an extra zero) and fly for months straight. if that wasn't enough, it could carry 16, 10 megaton nuclear warheads. (The largest nuke America has tested being 15 megatons, and this thing could carry over 10 times the amount of megatons) It was cancelled for being too destructive

Funny story about the sr-71, IIRC it originally had 2 wheels on the landing gear however they kept failing when landing so unsure of what to do they went to a landing gear expert and asked what they should do. The expert said to add more wheel, so now the sr-71 has 3 wheels per gear. Edit: other fun facts about the bird. It carried 16 shots of triethylborane since the fuel that it used jp-7 was so stable pilots used to extinguish their cigarettes in it. It's cameras were powerful enough to read a license plate from its altitude of fl800. It had over 800 missiles fired at it and was never it. The titanium used to build it was bought from the U.S.S.R through shell companies.

The A-10 was never truly a great plane, it was good at best and mediocre at worst. It has essentially 0 sensors and computing systems, the pilot has to visually identify each target, and its low speeds mean its susceptible to ground based AA defense. The A-10 was made by a group who despised modern aviation tactics and thought that dog-fighting would never be outdated.

The A10 is essential to the ground troops and also including recon if they see anything that they need to know about. Such as a massive ground insertion, whether it be mechanized or otherwise. It still plays a role and it will continue until my last breath

The a-10 is a close ground support asset. Which means everybody in the world's going to be able to see it. Doesn't matter if it is 110% stealth in its natural habitat. It is a vicious beast. Beast mode to be precise. They circumvent the war zone between 7k to 5K. Normally circling the war zone in a hidden by clouds in pairs. When the jtac on the ground calls in for support. One will go down and give that support from the direction of the jtac or the PFC whoever's left giving the ingress and egress computations. That gives it enough time so I can come in fast and pull out fast. They don't cruise along the ground at a couple hundred ft. That is suicide. Then the flight leader will hand off for the next one using the same or correcting for a better firing solution on whatever it may be. Tia USN/ WO-5 Ret/DD214 ps, I would like to add that it would definitely be a game changer if the JTAG and pfcs have a transmitter of a sort HF of course to be scrambled That would give the A10 a clear and undecisive picture without doubt of where our guys are following their movement and being able to put the warhead on the forehead. No collateral damage just like as they carry the unseen strobe. That is the soldiers on the ground whether they be US army or USMC. It would give them on their knee board exactly what exactly they can figure out their own ingress and egress determined by the proxy of tanks or AAAs that have been moved in. Normally the Apache would take all that out but somebody's always has something hidden away in a building or something? But that would be a great asset

Other than a handful of German destroyers that mounted 150mm guns, and were considered failures because of those weapons, no destoyers mounted bigger than 140mms and those were rare at that. The vast majority of destroyers in WWII and after mounted 130mm and lower. Post war the biggest caliber seen was 130mm on Soviet destroyers. 152 is a 6inch gun which is light cruiser specific and reserved for those and up.

To answer the question from around 5:40, the answer is simple: the F-117's extremely limited payload capacity limits what it can do to, more or less, just tactical bombing against high-value targets (effectively a modern version of WWII-era dive bombers like the Ju 87 Stuka). A bigger plane capable of carrying more ordnance could be useful...but at that point I think we'd be better off revisiting the YF-23 and modifying it more for the ground strike role (basically turning it into a stealthy version of an F-15E), instead of designing a whole new plane from the ground up. This would theoretically fill the gap between stealth multirole aircraft like the F-35 and dedicated stealth bombers like the B-2 and B-21. As for the concept of a stealth A-10's viability specifically...tbh I think I agree that the main purpose of making a subsonic stealth attacker like this would be for SEAD ops, in which case ditch the gun and add more ECM equipment and a larger payload bay, but the gun is what makes the A-10 an A-10. Otherwise you'd be better off using something like the EA-18G. There is, however, one thing the A-10 does very, very well, better than arguably any other CAS plane: psychological warfare. Knowing you've got an A-10 in the air is a huge morale boost for allied forces and horrifying for enemy infantry and light AFV crews. This is the main reason, I think, that Congress told the Air Force they can't retire it till a proper replacement is obtained. That and the Army has offered to take the A-10 if the Air Force doesn't want it, and if there's anything the Air Force hates more than having to fly CAS for the Army, it's the thought of the Army having ANY fixed-wing aviation assets at all.
