2:08 Some major errors here. First, the plane is named for Burt Rutan, its designer. The Rutan who flew it was his brother, Dick. But the much more serious error is your assertion is that Voyager's record for nonstop unrefueled circumnavigation still stands. In 2005, Steve Fossett flew the Global Flyer (also designed by Burt Rutan) around the planet in just 2 days, 19 hours. And yes, it was a solo flight.

The me 262 actually was intended to have a greater wing sweep but they were still working out the kinks. Much of that research gave the soviets a very nice boost in their research and later built the mig-15.

why not design new plane for the role similar to A10: close combat support and anti AA. So we need slow plane, capable of landing ant take-off from everywhere including sand and grass. It would be nice to have high capacity of loading ordnance and fuel. So basically stealth helicopter would perform this role better. Lets stay with planes - nowadays such platform would operate mostly as flying command and controll for the fleet of specialised drones. Due to amount of workload in such scenario we are looking for almost self-flying carrier for drone-operators. More less dual cockpit with AI piloting it and human pilot as an option. Here we have clear idea: stealth twin siter, with STOL capabilities and high survivability. Not sure whether turbofan or propfan engines are the right choice. If so air intake must be as high as possible - s-shaped air intake on top of the fuselage might contribute to stealth. Big problem is set of internal bays - weapon/cargo/emergency pickup of personel. Still we are looking more for stealth cessna equivalent than for stalth A10. One of interesting features of such plane is it's size connected with slow flying speed. It can act as flying radar-shield. Once it blocks and sends away radar waves, every drone hidden behind such plane would be invisible. Still cheaper and more effective way is to create stealth STOL transport plane. It could carry huge amount of armed drones, deploy them, refuel mid-aid and controll. More reasonable is getting stealth C130 and hundreds of specialized drones - from kamikaze drones, trough modern observation/strike drones to some kind of flying guns. In theory it's possible to fit such mothership with some guns or cannons - from defensive turrets to offensive, straffing canons. So instead of manned A10 average in everything but good at nothing lets threat "new A10" as just another drone. Something like unmanned cheaper and simpler version of F-117. Adding gun is not that big deal. Since its unmanned it can be launched with some rocket assist from totally unsuitable locations. It can also land using parachute. No need to thing about good handling on takeoff and landing. No need to worry about exceeding 15 G (no human on board). This might be reneissance of dogfighting and manouver fight. Just without most vulnerable, human piece of the system. The biggest problems in such scenarios arise around propulsion: operating speeds begs for turbo-prop / prop-fan and making this stealth is the hardest job. Who knows maybe it's material engineering problem: we need stealth adjustable-pitch propeler. I bet it would rather utilize radar-transparent materials. Do we have any that are both radar-transparent and strong enough to act as propeler blade?

The A-10 actually has more survivability than a typical multirole. it also has a smaller vulnerable area and is more powerful. It's also easy to fly and is covered with thick armor. Personally, I think it would be very useful for any high risk anti ground missions, and of course, close air support.

The range on a nuclear aircraft would be utterly insane. Though I wonder how effective a nuclear thermal turbine engine would be over a nuclear turboprop.
@adamb83172 күн бұрын
Heavy shielding would not really be that necessary with uranium fission, as a water jacket could be used to absorb the Neutrons emitted and convert that energy into heat to drive the steam turbines. Most uranium reactions do not put off Gamma radiation which is what requires heavy lead or concrete shielding to prevent irradiation of the crew.
