I hope the neck won't bend, if it does let us know. I built a guitar with a slightly thicker than a standard neck, and it's holding good without adjusting the truss rod, I never actually adjusted it even after 4 years now. I'm sure the epoxy gives more strength to the wood.
@ryancozzolino78324 жыл бұрын
I have advice: if you want a wood neck that won’t warp, you should cook it with a kiln, to remove all moisture. With epoxy resin necks, we typically like to put carbon fiber inside, and it literally doesn’t bend at all, and will probably never warp.
@GitaraMaker4 жыл бұрын
@@ryancozzolino7832 Yes I have a friend who cooks wood for my guitars. Carbon fiber is really a light and hard material, that would be really nice to install in a guitar neck.
@synisterfish4 жыл бұрын
Without a truss rod i imagine the neck will eventually bend under the constant pressure over time, unless the strings are a very light gauge. Epoxy is a liquid which sets into an apparent solid; - old glass windows and even huge glaciers are liquids that appear solid but slowly flow and move through time, affected by force.
@GitaraMaker4 жыл бұрын
@@synisterfish I agree, the truss rod is a solid insurance in case something like that happens and you can micro adjust the neck to suit your playing preference.
@Kyle-gw6qp3 жыл бұрын
@@synisterfish Glass isn't a liquid. That's a myth. Glaciers do move, but they are still solids.

I just have to say that not only are these videos an awesome showcase of your improvements and creativity as a luthier.... But also show how your playing of these guitars has been getting better and better. I remember the very first one. The guitar was awesome, and you sounded pretty good. But now these things are looking cooler and cooler, and your demos are getting better and better as well. I like your playing style. Reminds me of a hendrix/fruschante (spelling?) sorta vibe. Real cool man. Keep it up and you'll be playing gigs with your custom guitars!
@zakseipel94944 жыл бұрын
I have always wondered. Did Burls plan on being a Luthier or did this gig just land in his lap after a lightning bolt algo moment?
@CarmeloEnlow4 жыл бұрын
@Virgil G I'm not completely sure, but his original equipment wasn't beyond 'weekender' stuff. I think he upgraded the band saw and possibly the table, and perhaps added the workhorse planer. Proof positive it's the hands, and in his particular case imagination, that made it.
@jamesthe-doctor89813 жыл бұрын
I don't know for certain either, but my guess is that by the time his first "Colored Pencil Guitar" video was approaching the "1M, 10M, or even its 30M views" benchmarks, he most likely had caught on to the fact that making these kinds of videos could literally become a career. Or maybe he just wanted to be a crazier luthier than Dan Ferrington from the beginning.

Each has its own accent, each is beautiful in its own way. In each of them you put a part of yourself, your soul! Because you are passionate about what you like! I didn't make a guitarist, but I really love the way it sounds. My father played in a band, in his youth, in the era of rock musicians - Beatles, Deep Perple, Led Zeppelin, etc. And I grew up with their music. It's fine!

Nicely done, as usual! As opposed to making bodies, this one should be really interesting over time, to see how well the neck holds up. Other than bridge and neck attachments, this is the first time you've built something (on video, anyway) that will be under constant stress, and subject to what the environment will do to it.......with no truss rod! Please try to remember to do regular updates on how stable the neck is staying, or not. And yes, please do not be afraid to make the demo segments a bit longer. Love your playing! :-)

After building a few personal guitars out of things like boat oars, you're right that the neck won't really fault when it's tensioned. However, what you really need to worry about is it warping the opposite way when the strings lose tension: the neck will actually start to bow backwards instead of forwards. Crazy stuff, but it is something that's not noticeable until far in the future once you release tension for a while.

Great work as always and love the epoxy fingerboard idea, I would say on the topic of the truss rod, I'd make the point that it's not so much about strength as it is about adjustability. Being able to dial in the exact amount of relief is key for the best possible set up. That being said it clearly plays well so who am I to say!

Carbon fiber reinforcements rods in lieu of a truss rod might work at keeping the neck flat and you could epoxy them in so there would be no void around them. Might allow you to replicate this with a thinner neck profile.
