The silver lining is that I now spend time (especially with my son, daughter is starting to come around, both late teens and no ugly breakups involved, just grew apart) working on building guitars, Cars and general life skills including Barbecuing and all the good Boy Scout stuff ;P Take care brother and love to all.

I am almost 65 and just started learning to play the guitar and am currently making a ukulele for my 4 year old granddaughter. Part of this comes from watching good people such as yourself here on KZbin. I taught my daughter to play softball, basketball, it was easy, she loved it and so did I. She went with whatever season was running. Volleyball, basketball, running track and softball. Softball was her favorite. I had to get over my severe dislike for their constant chants. They had one for everything.

Speaking as a kid who's an adult now, I'm at home cuz in person university has been canceled for the rest of the year and the best part of my day is always having dinner with my mom and dad. We've made a habit now of playing cards and/or watching star trek next gen while eating and then going on a walk afterwards. its really nice to spend time with them especially because i spend nearly the whole day doing online classes. having that routine where we all meet up, even if its only for the last few hours of the day, makes it really easy for us to feel like we're still connected. Also, I want to say that if your kids know that you are doing your best to be a good dad, they'll appreciate it, but I don't think I would have at their age. I do believe that you're going to be an awesome dad just for trying. And I also know that your kids will appreciate it when they get older. I definitely do. Best of luck! You can do it!

The balance of doing things I'm good at vs. Doing the things to be a better father has got to be the hardest things I've ever done. But I'm going to definitely do this once my son is older. I've done two bass projects where I've let them paint the basses. But my kids are younger and my son shows interest even though he is three. From another dad who sucks at it, great work. Over the xmas break, my 9 year old daughter and i bought a Hannah Montana Washburn 3/4 electric guitar, stripped it down, painted it seafoam green, cleaned up the fret ends and have ended up with a guitar that not only plays good (like surprisingly good)and holds tune but she loves to death because we built it together. And being 3/4 size, many a night after she goes to bed i find myself rocking out on it. Your son will cherish it for years to come

Well done Sir! Time, talking, providing for and some other stuff is in a book. "How to get along with your teenager/kids" I drove this grandpa and his son. Listening to this grandpa helping his son with his grandchildren was supercool. As the son jumped out I interviewed the grandpa. I was driving a cab. He recommended the book and told me about his alcoholic father. Me? I chosed alcohol instead. Have no kids. But in theory I studied it 'cause I didn't want to end up like mine. When me and dad did stuff I was constantly scared to death. My dad was Very threatening. Didn't go to his deathbed. Anyway, the book might be worth reading. Dad gave me time. No talking. No hugging. Just hours and hours beside him in the car. Picking up sheep on various locations. He needed me to close the gates and find lost sheep. Had I not gotten all that time I would have been a serialkiller. But as I grew up I once tried to hug him. Didn't try that again. Icecold. But still, hours and hours staring at the countryside through the carwindow. And chasing sheep. He was an excellent cook. Made lots of candy. Weird fella. But "breaking the cycle" brings hope to the world. Well done!

Ugh someone left the onions out... Dan, keep it up man. God bless you and yours, just follow the example that Christ gave us: tons of tender mercy and loving kindness; just continue to provide for them and teach them and love them even when they fail. Also making sure to correct them when they do fail, but build them back up and encourage them to keep moving and following the Lord. Never give up, even when the world seems to be going crazy. The Ukulele kit for my daughter arrived today. School has not done a great job with online learning during quarantine so I figured we would work on this a little each day. She'll learn some great shop skills and maybe some math. It is more like an acoustic guitar requiring a jig, templates, bracing, clamps and lots and lots of patience. This will take many weeks to make. She is so excited and can't wait to make it her own. Great job on that guitar for your son. His smile said it all.

Dan, to the best of my knowledge, NO ONE finds parenting natural! Everyone has to learn their own way around the practice. Being a good parent (IMHO) requires a conscious decision to be a good parent. That's obviously not all that's needed, but it's where you start. You've started! Keep going, good luck -- and maybe find a project you can do with your daughter, assuming she likes the idea!

The first thing about being a good dad is confessing you don't know how to be a dad. I'm a boomer and was never confident about any dad decision I ever made. Love your project with your son. His enthusiasm reminds me of my son at that age. My son and I built a commemorative strat when he came back from Afghanistan. He never learned to play the guitar, but he does treasure it. I think your son will, too. Like all dads we have to feel, think and pray our way through parenting. You are on the right track, brother.

I love this! My son's senior year of high school, we bought a bass kit and put it together as a father/son project like this! It was fantastic. He had been playing in the jazz band all through high school with a short scale bass that I had given him when he was 6 years old. Over the years I had shown him some things, but he never really latched onto it. Freshman year, though, he jumped at it and by his senior year he was a groove machine! He loves his bass we built together and he mostly plays it these days on the worship team at his church. Watching your video, you are on the right track. Being a parent is not something that comes naturally, at least I don't think so. My story is that I lost my first child, my son, shortly after he was born. I don't know what kind of dad I would have been, but because of him, I know what kind of dad I became when I had two more kids, and now a step-son (who calls me dad!). I know not to take ANYTHING for granted with them and that sometimes it isn't about how much time you can spend with them, but the quality of the time you DO spend with them. I found that if you come home from a long day at work and they want to play a game when all you want to do is sit in your chair...you play the game. You push them in the swing for 20 more minutes, even though your back is breaking. You sit and watch them sleep, even when they are a teenager. YOU PRAY WITHOUT CEASING FOR THEM! You hug them, you kiss them, and you ALWAYS tell them that you love them, even when you are madder than a wet cat with them. God bless, you, Dan, and God bless your family, and rock on! \m/ >< \m/

Going camping, fishing, building a minibike with a lawnmower engine in the garage etc. It's inspiring to see someone going through the same thing and trying to focus on what's important

Tim Sway just did a similar video with his son. His and your videos brought back memories of working with my Dad (I started when I was about 12 yo) who built and remodeled houses. Good memories of a good man. However, he worked two jobs, so I did not see him a lot as I was growing up. The important thing is, he took good care of us and I always knew my father loved me. When he died (90 years old), I had nothing but good positive feelings about him. Good Dads have a lot of different responsibilities and activities unrelated to their kids that need to be balanced. So, I don't understand what you mean when you say "I suck as a Dad". Looks like you're doing all right to me. Best regards to you and your family.

I'm a grandpa dad. My son is 23 and my daughters are 8 and 9. So I'm able to do it over again, and it's the best! Watching the interactions between you and your son.. I see a very comfortable relationship, I see a man very interested in his son and I see a son who sees his dad as a super hero. I agree with everything you've said on all your videos, except you saying you suck as a dad. I understand that you chose the clips you posted, but even so..I can tell. Totally agree with putting the phone down, for sure. But when you're working on something, your son sees you working, he's learning that a person needs to work, and he's learning what you're working on. One thing I'm doing for my kids, every Thursday I video myself playing guitar because I just started playing during the lockdown and I suck. But I'm getting better, and someone said that recording yourself and watching will help you understand that you are getting better when you think you're in a slump. What I've been slipping into the guitar Thursday videos however are video messages to my kids. Advice, commentary, history of our family, my thoughts, just anyting that I can't imagine wanting to see my father talk about if he had done a video chat like this. In my will I'm going to have a note about a file folder on my computer with these video chats. So, that's what I'm doing for my kids while I am practicing guitar. Thank you for all your great videos! PS sorry for the long comment

My 31-year-old son and I just finished building a bunkbed for his two kids. It was one of the most enjoyable times we’ve ever had together. I too have sucked at being a dad. Thank you for this video. it was very encouraging to me.

It's really good that you realize your weaknesses and are working to overcome it. But here's the thing. Anyone who wants to go that extra mile to be a "good dad" is already doing miles and miles better than they think they are, and is already a good dad. Wanting to be the best dad you can is what makes you the best. Even the best have room to grow though, and doing that growing already puts you a step ahead of most other dads. Much respect man.

I'm not a kid person and I don't want them but this video was beautiful. You're a good father and this was a great project to do with your kid. Even if he doesn't end up being a guitarist, I'm sure he'll remember and cherish this fun experience!

Unexpected subject but very touching video. As the father of a young 23 year old woman, the only advice I can give you is to keep going. I too thought I sucked at being a parent and my daughter now tells me that despite all my failings she wouldn’t trade me for another one. You rock young man! 😉

I got my love of music from my parents and I'm still writing and playing to this day. Being able to share that lifelong gift is pretty special. And don't sweat it. Every parent is just figuring it out and it seems like you're well on your way. And now I need to get this dust out of my eye.

Hey Dan. I became a new subscriber a month or so ago. At first I wasn’t interested in this build because I wasn’t interested in a kid’s guitar. I finally watched it. Cheers to you! This might be the best video you’ve ever done. And feel free not to comment on this. Happy Father’s Day you master builder!

You figured it out my friend. Nobody is a perfect dad but as long as you keep working at it. I’d bet if I ask your kids, “Is your dad a good dad?” They say yeah. I may not be a big boss in my job but you what I coached my kids in sports I didn’t even know about and never missed a game or meet or concert or show. I have no regrets about that. I am Third- God, Family and Me. Great video!!! Love the guitar! Got my boys a short scale strat and agree tuning stinks. I had mine in A. They’re grown now 22 & 20 👍🏼

You're right man. It's all about priorities. We might not get it right every day, but we can be intentional about the time we spend with our kids...today. Your son seems like a really well-rounded little dude, and you can tell that he loves you. I can see him both ripping it up on guitar soon, as well as following in his dad's footsteps in the family business of building stuff.

Dan I'm 55, I have a son in his 20s, and a son in his 30s, and now it is hard to get them to spend time doing fun things as a family. Glad your making the change while your kids are small so they will know the importance of spending time with the people they love, and when they have kids of their own they will make sure you spend time with the grand kids. Sorry for my ramble.

Great post! I built my son's second bass guitar with him, and he absolutely cherished that bass. (GuitarFetish kit). We did the same thing you did - I let him do the headstock, the body paint, etc. He started his first band with that one, and he's still playing shows. With a better bass now, but I agree with you - having that bass that HE built probably kept him a lot more engaged in playing, practicing, and some HUGE bonus points when other musicians asked him where his wicked Jack Skellington smiley face bass came from.

I have been a stay at home Dad for 3 kids now for 10 years(ages 12. 08 and 04) there is no standard for being a good parent. My parents are baby boomers and I was a child of the 80s/90s, and definitely feel you on the Dad worked hard, my dad was a lawyer with his own firm working all day then working in the den when he would come home. The day to day with your kids and wife are important, but in 20 years it will be the events like this where you built his first guitar with him that he will actually remember. On side note thanks to the quarantine I have binged your videos and subbed, and ordered enough parts to make jag bass a p bass and es335 clone. Finding your channel was good and bad lol. Although I plan on using my cnc to make the body’s I had to order necks.

I shouldn’t be saying anything since I’m 18 and never even been in a relationship before yet but don’t call your self a bad dad. From what I saw you are by far not a bad dad. The fact that you want to try to be a better dad already makes you a good dad. I’ve notced very early on through other members of my family that everybody had their own approach to being a parent. No two dads or moms for that matter are gonna be exactly the same and that is what makes each parent’s method perfect in their own way. Also, it’s cool to see pass down your love of music and guitar to your son. While my dad has not played guitar since high school, he still brought me that gift by allowing me to do guitar lessons, introducing to the guitarists I’ve come to love, helping me when I’m working on a project guitar, buying me a guitar, and even giving me his old Kramer he used when he played guitar, which is still my number 1 guitar to play. If I’m ever lucky enough to have kids I plan to teach them my passions and I even plan to do the same when my cousin’s kids are older. I might even buy one of those kits and build it with them in the future. Who knows. Anyways, love your videos man and keep it up.

Very inspiring and a great reminder to conduct ourselves in the way we want our kids to emulate. A huge weight was lifted off my shoulders when I realized the “inheritance” a wise man leaves for his children isn’t strictly financial. There’s also an emotional inheritance we can pass down. Breaking that cycle is a big part of it. Good work. You are a great dad.

Hey dan, I’m a 16 year old dude, and I want to give you a tip that whenever my parents do for me just makes me so happy and that’s to let your kids tag along or spectate in some of the work you do around the house or on guitars, ive been doing that with my uncle in his garage where he works on vintage cars and from a very early age I was inspired to be a full time mechanic, maybe you letting them watch and answer their questions will make them want to be a luthier in the future, just a friendly tip!!

What a GR8 vid my friend! Keep doing what you are and it's gonna be great! My biggest regret is not giving my time to my kids when they were young, as I was doing like your dad, in everything I could do to give them a good life. When I had a stroke in 2012, it put EVERYTHING into perspective...all of my kids told me "we've never been happier dad than we are now"...I wasn't all about making the money etc to make it an easy life but rather giving them of my time and efforts to try and make up for the "lost" time...they're all grown up now and have their own lives going on all over the country, They ALL stay in almost daily touch with y wife and I and they let us know they're good and happy...that's what matters most to me...

I don't think fathering comes naturally to many, myself included. I'm old enough to not me a millenial, but too young to be a boomer. Barely. But I totally get the hard working father. My dad was the same as yours by all accounts. But trust me, this video shows you are more than a step ahead of the average dad. I don't lose sleep over fathers like you. You got this!

Im a highschool student with a friend who had a last year. She got a lot of hate for it and im not promoting having a kid super young, but i like to drop all electronics sometimes and go over to visit her and her baby. The little girl is so addorable and me and her family have gotten so close to the point where they call me "Uncle Sven". Blessing in disguise.

Hey, Dan. I just wanted to thank you for this. You're doing a great job, keep it up! I grew up with a dad that wasn't present most of the time, and I, unfortunately, followed his path a little too closely. I was fortunate enough to reconcile with him before he passed, and I was able to salvage my relationship with one of my boys. Keep doing what you're doing, they'll remember things just like this! Again, awesome job!
