I Built a Piston Powered Gear Train with Internal Drive Mechanisms in Scrap Mechanic!

Back again with more Scrap Mechanic! Today we are looking at a new build, a piston powered gear train! This gear train is inspired by the Heisler with some differences but is a piston powered train with completely internal gearing mechanisms! This build is also completely vanilla with no mods required!

On your ‘train tracks in survival’ idea, it would be awesome if the tracks were layed out, but every so often there would be damage that you have to repair, or a bridge you have to construct! I think that’d be so cool, go out and check the track and do maintenance along the way so you can haul bigger trains!

This kind of already exists with the haybots. I've done a bit with train tracks in survival and they like to attack the tracks and I have to go around every so often patching up damage.

@@SomethingoldenYT Noice! And using level 5 steel would be too expensive. I wonder what would be the most renewable and easy-to-remove block to make rails out of. Easy to remove also means easy to add, since the blocks which take the longest to remove in bulk are often the most renewable otherwise, like food, or honeycombs, or flower pieces, and so on.

@@SapioiT Most of my rails are made from metal, but I've started mixing in concrete since you can make a ton of blocks from stone. Also, often when I'm patching tracks I'll use scrap metal picked up from the haybots. It gives some of my older tracks a rusted, well used look.

@@SomethingoldenYT I actually forgot scrap metal is renewable. There is also the option of using the haybot arms/spines themselves as tracks, I guess, and they might be less likely to attack them (but I'm not sure if they do).

12:20 Kan, I built two scales for that purpose. They are in the workshop. Just weld it to your creation. Press tare button and start loading. For example. It shows how many 9/10 weighted block you loaded. (You can load any stuff it just show equivalent X/10 value (x can be determined by user)). They are called ; Most useful scale Most useful scale mini Both are the same. One of them is just smaller(duh).

6:24 You have discovered 0 RPM, some real engines are capable of it, generally they have to be two-stroke engines as a four-stroke cycle wouldn't be completed by this action, setting a two-stroke engine (usually large engines like stationary hot-bulb diesel engines) at a really low throttle setting can result in this situation where the two-stroke cycle is completed by crankshaft just kind of wobbling back and forth instead of making a full rotation.

piston trains are always cool, I recently finished building the "long-shot 1426" an 8 piston powered locomotive using the walschaerts valve gear system (I took inspiration from your old video about this system), the only two problems it has is the lag it generates, to be watchable I have to lower the physics to 7 or less (it can also work in physics 1 with only a slight slowdown) and the shooting power which is slightly higher than the weight of the locomotive

Build piston powered class 70 with this real life mechanism. Next time use ropes mod to connect cars so if you seperate them enough, there is no lag. Make power test: electric engine vs gas engine. The power of engines changed in survival update.

I would actually like to see what is the maximum gearing you can achieve in what could be categorized a "starter vehicle". Do keep in mind that if you use small pipes for the wheel spokes of a gear you can make a 2-radius gear this way: bearing in the center, 6-joint piece for the first layer and 5 joint piece for the second layer (the end layer), then bearing to connect the layers and small pipe towards the outside, then small corner piece going to the other layer, then one layer has small pipes and the other has big pipes. If you make bigger wheels, which are a bigger pain, you still need an even number of layers, to have the gear teeth be small-big-small-big and so on in a circle. You could also use a wheel with a spoke on the side, and two smaller wheels (i.e. in-game wheels) in a 90 degrees corner, and have the thing connecting the sliding spoke and small wheels together have a center point to mirror the motion (like the focal point of light rays) to make it more stable, and use the smaller wheels to power the bigger wheel (because a single smaller wheel would have the most power on two opposing quarters of the rotation, so you need a second one perpendicular to the first one from the bigger block-made wheel, to make the power delivery smooth and not get wheel slip). And I'm curious what other ways you (and the community, after you make a video challenging everyone the same thing) could find. The end-use of it, if you need one, would be getting a petrol engine then a controller or electric engine achieve as high of a speed as possible on flat ground (you could use straight-line rails with milestones, to calculate it's acceleration (like 0-to-100 distance/second) and it's maximum sustained speed (in distance/second). Maybe even use multiple of those to make a gearbox which allows us to use the W/S of the engine/controller connected to a seat for the direction and switches for the speed moving in that direction.

Unfortunately due to the floppyness of Scrap Mechanic bearings when under strain this has a very glitchy problem: the gears clipping out of the gearbox.

regarding the piston engine then the part you rotate is like a variable timing. at top position it run fast but got low torgue. set a little before top give more torgue but less rpm. same system i used on the green energy engines you and scrapman showcased. gotta say its easier to control if you make it rotate slower. works great with thruster based engines. made a test train that can pull 2000 ultra heavy blocks with just a single powered axle. 1200 ultra heavy up a sloped rail made from 1x6 wedges.

"Gear trains" are another word of saying the interesting shay locomotive. The shay has a slightly moved boiler right or left and it only has 2 cylinders on one side or underneath. The shay comes in any size big or small the small one is an 0-4-0 and the big one is an 0-4-4-0
