Very nice build. The only drawback is the rather awkward location of the mirror. If I walk into a room with the mirror there, my "something isn't right" alarms go off.

I think you only say that due to the fact that we know there is a hidden room there. If it wasn't for that I'm sure you wouldn't think twice about it. Or at least think to you're self that it looks weird but then you will realize the angle of the roof and see that everything their is weird so then it all fits together in a weird way. Weird place for mirror + weird roof = makes sense ill let it be.

Only "improvement" that could be suggested would be where the door ended up. It's very well concealed, but the mirror looks odd where it is. Still, the concealment is excellent!

Most people aren't going to notice but the spacing of the windows and placement of the mirror is kinda odd. The illusion is very likely to fool any smash-and grab opportunists that happen to come along if the house were ever empty but if the opportunity ever comes up I would recommend moving the door more towards the center so the mirror placement makes more sense. I know you came up with the mirror thing after laying out the room, I'm just suggesting that if there's a next time, or for anyone who is planning their own room, take that into consideration. Might also consider using an exterior door and placing studs close together or some other way of reinforcing the wall just in case someone ever does discover it it might slow them down enough for the police to get there. Overall it is still very cool and should still serve it's purpose.

That's an awesome idea - I'm finishing out my basement and I have a room that's fully enclosed in cement on all 6 sides (minus a doorway) and I was thinking of doing a floor to ceiling, wall to wall bookshelf, but this space, although a home office now, is designed to be a bedroom. So a sliding mirror would make a ton of sense! And I love how you did the floor trim under the entrance.

Just finished mine in an old laundry room. I used the Gladiator slat wall system since I have the same in my garage. Swapped out my slat door for a steel door with an inside deadbolt. Also just carpeted mine. 3 shelf system (stained pine) added for another 20 ammo boxes and accessories. Added radios, weather radio, Faraday bags, mounted Gladiator shelves, and bins. I'm very happy with it but I forgot one thing. With the steel door it makes the room almost airtight and I need to build a vent into my crawlspace.

This is awesome! I plan to do this one day. I was about to say something about a protection dog, but looks like you got that covered. They are invaluable. They help provide an early warning and in most cases will keep intruders at bay and if it came down to it would attack if you had to go hands on. I can’t imagine not having a protection dog now.

For a room that has guns hanging on the wall, I would have at least used plywood on the walls as opposed to drywall. It is just too easy to kick through a wall of drywall. I also agree with others about putting a matching mirror opposite the sliding one for symmetry and then perhaps hang a TV in the middle of the 2 mirrors that isn't in the way of the sliding mirror. That would really hide it. Otherwise, nice job and a cool idea.

this is awesome, but the biggest wow moment was the shoe organizer of magazines! I have between 4 an 8 magazines for every gun I own and they are in velcro magazine pouches from 6-10 magazines each. its so annoying looking for the right mags for a range session... and the velcro is so damn annoying loud... gotta look into your idea!

Good day to you man. This is Ted from Texas. I definitely like the fact of having a Gun Room. I don't like the fact that the house burns down there's a good chance of losing all your firearms in the fire. So I ended up going for a really big gun safes that were really Fireproof. But of course I outgrew the big safe I needed a second one. And they are expensive. Especially high security and Fireproof . Thanks for sharing man

Awesome mate! When I built my hidden room I off set the studs on each side so the drywall wasn't connected to the same set of studs for sound proofing when I'm in there you'd have to listen real hard to hear anything. Also did you place anything around the underside seems of the mirror to block out inside light?

I installed very thin pieces of lauan at the top and bottom to give the drawer slides more meat to mount to so I didn’t blow through the front trim of the mirror. I didn’t need to thankfully, the trim is quite thick and fits snugly against the wall only buffered by the drawer slides and I have very little to no light leak. The interior door on the inside also probably helped with that.

Add some kind of magnetic lock to the mirror so that if someone was to try to check the mirror, it doesn't move and it seems screwed to the wall rather than slide and discover the door, which can easily be busted through, even the drywall is easy to get thru. So concealment is like you said the key aspect of the security of it all.

Have you considered doing something to the rails the mirror slides on to add some initial resistance to movement to avoid an inadvertent "bump" leading to an unintended discovery? Thinking some clear caulk nubs you'd have to force the rail wheels passed with a little effort.

What a great video! We got a gun room tour, DIY video, gun collection, hidden in plain sight idea, and some great ideas (like the shoe rack for mags idea). I do have a question tho, how do you plan on controlling humidity? I’m in NC and it’s getting humid so I worry about stuff being left out. I do have those dehumidifiers in my gun safes but that’s it.

The room has one of our forced air vents inside of it as well as an outlet for a future Dehumidifier if necessary (I wanna see how well the forced air does for the room before I get a dehumidifier)

Well done! Did you use the aluminum inserts on the slatwall? I'm wondering if the inserts are necessary.

I did not. However, the vertical multiple gun stand did break the slatboard in a couple days due to the weight focused on 2 mounting points on just the material, and I had to replace it, so I would definitely recommend the inserts for those type of mounts that would be under more weight. As for single mounted guns with slat mounted 16” on center I don’t think it’s necessary so far.

Yeah, the price for doing inserts is no joke, I originally priced out using them for the entire project and the overall cost was ridiculous and I decided against it. Knowing what I know now id only suggest using them on the vertical multi gun stands, or in the event that you lack adequate spacing/hardware between mounted boards and overall load becomes a concern/issue!

Looks great... but heres some food for thought. I built my house 12 years ago, and specifically had a 20x16 room added for my toys. I had every intention of taking all my firearms and hanging them on the walls... Just before we moved in, my sisters house burned to the ground. My brother in law lost about 15 rifles that were "displayed"... But every gun in the safe was protected. After that, I decided a decent safe was still the best for protection protection... so my gun room now holds 3 liberty fatboys. Unless youre going full vault (I'm actually debating it now), as good as it looks to have them all out and hanging, god forbid you actually have a fire, because those toys will be gone. And as an FYI for anyone reading this... Most people also dont realize that homeowners insurance is useless when it comes to a firearms collection. Mine paid "up to" 2500 on firearms... Thats one decent rifle, or one middle of the road competition pistol. Buy firearms insurance!!! Dont rely on Allstate or Farmers to replace your expensive toys. Because they wont!
