When cutting holes with a hole saw, drill the hole until the drill bit come through the back side and stop. Flip the board over and finish the holes with the drill bit hole for alignment. You will end up with a clean hole with no tear out on either side of the workpiece.

Great project, only suggestion to consider is the door jams the door hinges are a good choice. As a Fire Captain I have breached many many secure doors with a Halligan Tool. Literally in seconds. Adding steel door frames with big strong lag bolts makes busting through much harder. Not criticizing at all just food for thought. I built mine and my buddy said watch this! Redo.

The sliding barn door concealing the vault door is the best advantage you have against unauthorized entry. If you don’t see the door you won’t be able to pry on the lock side door jamb to gain entry. Storage solution is an 8 and security solution is a 3 ! Well done !

You are one of the very few people who has commented who has realized the main security for the closet is the fact its hidden behind anther door. I have had several people over who had no idea there was a door hidden behind the barn door. They simply saw the barn door and didn't know till I showed them.

Cool video. I recently created a “Combat Closet” since I didn’t have a space to create a “War Room”. Turned out great. Added steel plating to the walls to slow down anyone trying to cut through the drywall, as well as a keypad & biometric door lock. I also added a battery operated Ring camera. It’s nice to have that extra bit of security by getting cellphone alerts if someone (fortunately only family members so far!) access the closet, it records the incident, plus it has 2-way communication and night vision. Definitely worth the $50 when the Ring cam goes on sale.

Nice use of an empty closet space. Personally I would have laid in two layers of cement board on all three sides and then the bead board. Reasoning for this is that I become more resistant to attack from the sides or back if there is only drywall and bead board. As for the door I personally would eliminate the vent holes as they are easily knocked out allowing anyone to look into the closet. You can still place squares of plywood over the openings with 1/2” spacers, this way you will have ventilation while providing some interference from someone pulling the plugs. I stick with desiccant bags and place them in the oven to dry them out every two months. Now for storage of long guns vertical is nice but one has to aware that if you have wooden stocks on any firearms, oil will migrate to the bottom and wind up infusing wooden stocks with oil. For anything with wood I prefer to keep it horizontal, space permitting. Modern firearms with synthetic of metallic stocks I will keep vertical. When using these electronic locks, it’s a good idea to keep the buttons clean with isopropyl alcohol. For a pro thief they could use black volcano powder to dust the keypad and will see what keys are continually pressed. This is the same powder used by detectives on crime scenes for finger print lifting except in this case they will show a pro thief which buttons are being used to open the lock. It eliminates trying all ten keys.

I probably would have gone with a metal door and a metal plate to cover the area between the door and the door jam where the dead bolt is to keep anyone from being able to quickly get in by using a Sawzall on the wood door or a Sawzall/grinder on the dead bolt. Otherwise it looks really nice. A future dehumidifier install (maybe vented to the attic?) Could be a good project.

I was thinking about the dehumidifier too 👍 . I was thinking static , but yes , venting to the attic would promote air flow , taking advantage of the home A/C and the thru-ports he placed in the door . I have some hardened 3/16" plate that would be the perfect size to protect the dead-bolt . I'm thinking I anneal just the ends to get screw-holes thru . EXCELLENT suggestions 👍 !

I mean, if someone knows it is there, has access to the house and already has a sawzall for attacking the door...even if he installed a steel door, they could punch a sawzall blade thru the drywall, cut through a few studs and pull the whole steel door and frame out and help themselves. Unless he builds a steel and concrete reinforced room inside the house, it is going to be somewhat vulnerable. I think what he built provides the level of security he wants/needs. The closet door hiding behind the sliding barn door is providing the bulk of security by obscurity.

He mentioned this in another comment. He was in the Marines, then joined the Army. So he has both. He is no longer active duty, so these are just clothes, not uniforms. He wears them only around his house to do projects/yard work etc.

Better remove the drywall and replace it with Steel plate because drywall and plywood is too easy to cut through for walls. Actually he should have made the door look like a recessed bookcase hiding the fact that there is even a room there.

Great video. Thanks for putting it out there!! One take away I got from this is to replace my regular door hinges with security hinges. One question... Did you run an HVAC duct into it for temperature and humidity control?

No I didn't. That is why I added the air vents in the door, since the HVAC duct for the hallway is two feet away from the door on the ceiling. At this point I still haven't found a speck of rust on my guns and it doesn't feel any different in temperature or humidity from the closet to the hallway. Also it would be a difficult to add an HVAC duct inside the closet because the closet use to be where the furnace was. A previous owner had it removed and installed in the attic directly above the closet.

I wanted a handle from the start but most handles do not fit behind the Barn Door and the ones that do are typically for cabinets or for drawers. I feel like it will look weird which is dumb considering the entire set up is weird in its own way. So I will probably suck it up and just buy some basic drawer handle.

Have a couple of questions, and suggestions and don’t openly respond, first, is your door hollow or solid core, are the hinges nrp’s, none removable pins, if their not, your lock does you no good except to keep your kids out, the pins are removable via set screw that threads through the hinge barrel into the pin, when the door is in the open position if their 3 1/2” you’ll need to go to 4” which are for 1 3/4” door which I don’t recommend or turn yours into nrp’s as they don’t make them in 3 1/2, also add a middle hinge, do at least the upper and lower, next drill a 1/4” hole in the hinge plates opposite each other, on the jamb side drill through the jamb, insert and fix in place metal round stock 1” in and approximately 3/8” sticking out, when drilling into the edge of the door the depth of the pin, angle the bit towards the outer face of the door so the pin will clear the edge of the hole when closing, there’s more to do on the lock side, but what you’re looking to accomplish is slowing down the bad guys, giving the police time to respond to your house alarm, bad guy, hey look locked door must be something valuable and their going to hopefully be fixated on getting in there, their going to see the hinges and laughing what an idiot, until they find out, you need to approach this project like an onion, layers, each time they think their in they gotta fk with something else, hopefully the cops get there before they gain access, any way maybe food for thought.

It wasn't their vast knowledge of combat medicine that made them great, it was their compassion for the guys they were serving and serving with. Severe lack of that at the VA. Rant over. lol I was joking about the cancer but I did know a guy who had that medical issue and lost one of his nuts to it while in service and still had issues with the VA when he got out. So yeah the VA sucks most of the time, I have lucked out and had some good care by a doctor for a specific issue that they diagnosed, operated and post oped all in like 3 weeks so it is rare but some people at the VA are trying.

I considered it but the price on the stuff I found turned me away. For the price of the slat I saw I could have removed all the drywall and put 3/4 inch plywood on the walls and still have saved money.

Just came across this vid. Like the idea, but as a Marine myself, what’s the deal with wearing MarPat? Boots not even bloused so I’m confused. Not to mention switching between uniforms? Just a lot to unpack here. I get it, ANYONE can wear it but I’m a bit dismayed with the wearing of multiple service cammies throughout your video and the thought it could be for your personal gain to get subs. I guess I’m just concerned with having that as part of your online “persona” when it APPEARS you don’t know how to wear the Marine Corps uniform properly. Let me break it down barnie style for you and spell it out with crayons. I joined the Marines then I got out of the Marines and joined the Army. I have full issues of both Marine and Army uniforms. As for why the boots are not bloused and I mix and match the tops and bottoms its because I'm no longer in service and can wear the clothing however I like. I do not wear the pieces of uniform anywhere except my house or in my yard to do projects. I don't put out military content, information or even talk about the military in my videos. My videos are not a representation of the military, unlike the numerous numbers of influencers who are wearing the uniform, actively serving and making content at work instead of just doing their job. Since I'm out I don't have to follow uniform regulations anymore, Marine Corps uniform regulation states that upon exiting service the blouse and trousers should have the name taps and US Marines cut off of them. Upon doing so they are no longer considered a uniform item and are simply an article of clothing to be worn however you want.

I was issued these uniforms and paid for some as needed to replace ruined or damaged ones. I know guys who threw all their stuff away when they got out. I know some guys who keep their stuff but shove it into a closet to never use again. I have over a dozen marine and army shirts, and 10 combat bottoms total. Throwing it away seemed like a waste, I sold what I could and kept the rest. I figured I might as well use it for the house and car projects instead of ruining clothing that I would have to buy. My neighbor is an Army Vet and wears his trousers while mowing the yard so I'm not the only one out there who uses the uniform after getting out.

Nice project. But with hinges on the outside, pop out each pin, swing the door out by the hinge side and you are in. 2 minutes or under… But nice closet to keep kids out.

I talked about this in the video, these are security hinges the pins can't be popped out. There is also a metal tab that sticks out on side on the hinge and and goes into a hole on the other side to prevent the hinge from being able to move up or down in the event some one does manage to pop the pin out. So no you are not popping the hinges in 2 minutes.

This is whatever show I want it to be. You are on my channel and I make the content I want. I'm not DIY Carpenter, I'm The DIY Grunt. Since most people don't seem to understand what that means, let me mansplain it. A "Grunt" is a term used to describe a US Army or Marine Corps Infantryman. The infantry is trained on various types of guns and so many grunts own guns so they can continue to maintain the skills they are taught. So making a gun closet is perfectly in line with my channel. If you don't like it you can keep scrolling, clearly this video was not meant for you. I have plenty of other videos you may be interested in so I suggest you watch those instead of the one that offends you.
