Man, Ryan is such a real one; you can tell he really cares about his craft. He genuinely wants to help everyone learn; he goes out of his way to do stuff like this, the competitions, making regular content that's super informative etc. Genuinely a great force for humanity - I hope he gets all the recognition he deserves, I certainly appreciate him a hell of a lot.

This is massively beneficial to the novice composer and the experienced one as well! Being able to see a wide variety of options immediately at your disposal that you know will be “effective/safe” for any given voice is very valuable. And free!! Thank you.

Fantastic! Maybe it already exists, but I've always thought a great tool would be to similarly input two notes (any reasonable interval), and it displays which stringed instrument can play them as a double-stop (if any), where it would appear on the neck of that instrument, and the level of difficulty.
@ericleiter61792 ай бұрын
Correct me if Im wrong, but I think there is a mistake in the program as far as its optimal suggestions are concerned...I realize that all of the wind instruments are shown on the notation as being in concert pitch, i.e., non transposing (except the piccolo is written an octave below its sound like normal), but the issue here is that while the given parameters for the Zelda melody technically fall within the range of the English Horn, that high sounding 'A' is at the absolute top of its register, and therefore will sound strained when playing that high...is this idea of optimal range considered by the program? Not trying to be that guy, as I also appreciate everything you do Ryan, and Rovshan...there is SO much to learn, its nice to have tutorials like this available online from your efforts, and please keep up the good work!!!

Can confirm, EH player here; that A (played as an E on the EH) is definitely not in the comfortable range
@ChizFreak2 ай бұрын
I would also criticize that it doesn't contemplate dynamics of a passage. That's very important to take into account when choosing an instrument. Just because a flute can play it doesn't mean it will be heard if it's its lower register and there are other instruments playing loud. This seems like a first good step though, with iterations it could become a very good tool.

@@ChizFreak For info - the course does go into that level of detail but as you say, it would be great to build that into the tool as well.

Rovshan’s Course might be THE BEST orchestration course in terms of getting to know the instruments practically, sections and subsections, as well as the whole limitless homophonic textures that one can then extrapolate to many things.
@jamaciasmusic2 ай бұрын
Indeed, the way to learn to voice chords between different instruments, from classic to modern harmony is just eye-opener. For me it has the best woodwind dedicated chapter and in a very digestible way, learning to voice and use the woodwinds as a section, knowing the limitations of the first double woodwind section which helps you to understand why auxiliary instruments made it through to cover those limitations. As well as Brass combinations and Strings multiple stops, all crystal clear.

3:17 French Horn in F is usually notated within a G-clef, you can write F-clef but you'll make a lot of Horn players really unhappy... I know I know French horn players are supposed to be able to read anything and transpose from any key... As a French horn player I haven't encountered much F-clef (or it must be really low) music sheets yet.. That is more of a Trombone thing... About the same range I know.. But most French horn players prefer to read G-clef or a lot must have changed in the past 30 years...

For the most part, this is a pretty decent tool. However, I would suggest one additional feature. Is it possible to have the note play back (perhaps as a piano sound) when a key on the keyboard is pressed? That way, there isn't any uncertainty about exactly which octave that corresponds to. Also, I notice that it suggests using the French Horn on melodies going up to C6, which seems a bit high considering that horns traditionally only go up to a sounding pitch of F5. This translates to a written pitch of C6, though. Did you use the written or sounding range of the horn when developing this tool?

Hi Ryan.. I'm confused as to how the climax is harmonized with Bbdim7 when the 7th of that chord is, for a dim 7th, an Abb, and for a half-dim 7th, is an Ab.
@RyanLeach2 ай бұрын
Abb is also G, which is what the A is resolving down to as an appogiatura. It might be better to call the chord Gdim/Bb

And this, my dear friends, is exactly how to NOT orchestre. You have to view composition as an organic whole and not single out certain melody lines here and there via some neat little tools. This Zimmer-like approach is completely pointless.
