I Built me a Deer Trough Feeder

A friend of mine left an old half barrel feeder behind and I used it to create a trough feeder in order to add protein feed to the mix. All material used in this build are scrap. I did not specifically buy anything for this build. In this video I provide measurements of all items should anyone want to use this design for putting together a relatively cheap feeder for feeding deer.

Yeah it’s cut in half you can put screen wire over the holes if there to big keep corn from going out the bottom so much Cervus. Just a thought I had a friend of mine gave me a Moultree feeder with the timer to set when the feeding deers come around. Just a 5 gallon bucket though. That will work for awhile

I thought of that right after I put all that stuff in it. Oh well, I'll do that when it gets empty. Something has been eating the stew out of some of this stuff. I put a camera on it yesterday to see what it is. I bet it is raccoons.

Cool Mike! I built one years ago and never got them to use it. I have two out now and I can't keep the feed in it. They will eat 100 pounds of feed in less than a week. My friend has since built one, but he can't get them to eat out of it. I told him his roof is too close to the ground and they don't like that so he'll need to raise the roof about a foot higher.

So I had a reply and YT said oops something went wrong. Anyway, I just stated that I had built one before and never got the deer to feed from it. I think the roof was too low. Anyway, cool Mike on the long success you've had with them.

HI Mark 👋🏼 It's all good. Just spent the last two days on the tractor cutting trails through the pines to the hardwood bottoms. They plant the trees in rows about 10 feet apart so you can drive a tractor between the rows. You just have to watch out for stumps. I busted three sheer pins today.

I think so too! I'm just hoping the deer actually start using it. They like the spin type feeders right now, but I put a camera on it so we'll see if any deer actually start using it.

Hey there. That is a nice home made feeder. Good job on that. I should upgrade to something like that as well. I have a few large stumps with mineral and salt blocks on them. Thanks for sharing be safe. 🇺🇸

Thanks 👍 Yeah on this property it takes a bit to find some clay to put out the salt and minerals. Although I could throw a 50 pound mineral block in this trough. I may do that as I have one in a bucket at the camp. I'll have to remember to grab it and take it over there.

Good looking feeder! I like the idea of putting the legs into the ground a bit...less chance it will get pushed around. Deer will love it!

Ah, sorry Scott. I used to feed the deer right behind my fence so I could watch them from the back door, but after a couple got hit on the road that goes by the house I stopped feeding them here at the house. We still see them from time to time, but no more dead ones in the side yard. So this feeder was transported 60 miles to the east to one of my hunting properties. Since deer season is over and we are in the hard weeks of February I want to see if a little protein and carbs will help them out.

Nice! The deer around here would really fight over a spot at that trough, after they got used to it. Seems to me, that as long as they think they either found it, or stealing it, they like it. lol

Thanks! That's funny. I hope they think they are stealing all that food I put out for them. I just put a camera on it to see if it is getting any use. Something is in it but I think it may be raccoons.

I had wooden deer feeders or something like that but the dang raccoons around are fisty against the deer and chase the deer away from them. So I got a all metal feeder and a lot of hanging 55 gal. Feeders. Oh yeah an a lot of raccoon pelts. Lol
@cervus-venator
@cervus-venator Жыл бұрын
Those dang raccoons are a menace!! That's what killed all of my dad's chickens. If I live close to him I would of had me a coon skin cap or three. Right now I think that is what is in the trough feeder, but I put a camera on it to try and see. Around all of my broadcast feeders are hundreds of deer tracks, but little to none around the trough.

Nice feeder! Hopefully the racoons won't treat it like a buffet line. They are the bane of my feeders, well racoons and hogs.

Nice job man! What material did you use for the roof? It looks familiar, but can’t put my finger on it

It's and old truck bed liner. One of the plastic kind that sat in the bed. A friend of mine had gone to a spray in bed liner place and asked if he could get some old bed liners and he was able to get about 20. We cut them up to make deer blinds out of. This was a piece that was still pretty big and I thought it would make a quick easy roof. If not that then it would have been a couple of piece of roofing tin.

It's not too high. You want it tot be high enough that the hogs can't get into it.
@cervus-venator
@cervus-venator 10 ай бұрын
That is one thing I had no idea how high to make it. I didn't want it too high that the deer couldn't get to the bottom of the trough, but I didn't want it too low either. While I have had hogs digging holes all over the place this past spring I have not had any come to this feeder. I'm not sure if I have very many hogs on the property at this time, but I know how they can take over a place as I've seen this happen on several other properties I've hunted. Luckily, because I used decking screws to build this I can change the legs out for longer ones to raise it should the hogs become an issue.
