The upper head set cup was pressed in crooket as hell🫣🫣also the DUB Bottom bracket wasn't really spinning as free as it should, I think the spacers were not correct, also I would double check that chainline, I may be wrong but on the video it looks weird. Also please press any bearing by the outer bearing race, as far as I could see in the video you did every bearing with the wrong adapter and just gave it some ugga dugga on the inner race. That's how you wear our/ destroy new bearings extra fast.

Love the build and the Channel! Pro mechanic advice: get a correct size dropper as soon as you can. Those require that they reach past the seat tube-top tube intersection. Love the vid and bike choice, altho i’d recommend getting a beefier shock, as this one is made for light trail riding and xc, and about that headset cup, i think your main issue was that you didn’t press it in straight
@mtbboy19932 жыл бұрын
To me it looks like bad head tube tolerances resulting in the cup being pressed in further on one side due to head tube being closer to spec on that side and too tight on the other side. Sadly issues with head tube and bottom bracket tolerances are common. It's unacceptable. one of the reason I went for Nicolai/Geometron is I know how they make their bikes and they use proper manufacturing process, and have a great reputation. I am happy with my G1, the head set install went smoothly. I've not heard any complaints about the head tubes or BB shells. But Commencal has a bad rep with DHH frames snapping, the Meta frames having issues with bearings getting pushed out, if left too long that will damage the bearing bores and make the linkages rub. Also the internal cable routing is not for me. But it would be interesting to see an expert use a roundness gauge on the head tube bores. Check out Hambini on KZbin, he does that.
@tom93r12 жыл бұрын
Great build vid! It's fun watching somebody put together their dream bike. For CushCore, it looks like you did the install dry. I did my first install a couple weeks ago and found the most important thing for me was to use some sort of lubricant on the tire. I used a little spray of the general purpose cleaner I use for cleaning my bike, that was just enough to make things go from almost impossible to no problem at all.

@@EvansMTBSaga Thats one way to ovalise the head tube. Just make sure if its going in wonky, you straighten it before pressing it in further with anything. Even if its a gentle hammer tap to make it line up, will make it go in much more easily and save you any issues with damaging head tube. Also its worth noting that using the tapered pieces of metal that sit on the inner race of the bearing, will have no support apart from the inside bearings itself and can sometimes damage the internals. I saw the BB seemed quite tight, spinning once fitted, and that could be because of that. In cases like this, if you don't have the proper fitting metal "guide", its better to use the bigger flat opposite side of the guide and press the bearing in by the outer edge of the cup, whether thats BB or HS, NOT the bearing itself. If you have to press the bearing in with the race, use the outer race as that doesn't press on the bearings themselves interally. All radial bearings, compared to angular contact bearings, have nothing but a fragile internal if you push from the inside. As a professional mechanic over the last ten years with many workshops around the UK it really is impressive what you have learnt and get up to on these videos. I really enjoy watching your content, especially the high low bikes and the fix the public bike.

2:03 I am curious why you had issues with the chain falling off, I have the 11 spd HG versions. are you using a boost chainring? if so that might be the reason, you should avoid using a boost/3mm offset chainring, cus the chain line will be bad, it will wear the chain and cassette more, and will reduce performance. Just one ride with a boost chainring and I noticed the chain scratched the cassette, the chain dropped on the 50T cog if I just shook or hit the rear tyre just right, so when I backpedaled it dropped. If your frame has the clearance for a 6mm offset/non boost chainring use that. Keep in mind the biggest the chainring the smaller the cassette less secure the chain is, but of course the tooth profile, the chain used, the wear, the bb drop, all play a role in how much the chain wraps around the biggest cog. Hub used can effect the chain line too. But keep in mind the cassette will wear and cause the chain to be less secure so it might drop when backpedaling at insane speed in the repair stand, which is happening now, but under actual use it does not happen. I currently use a Absolute Black 32T oval chainring with 6mm offset/non boost, chai stay is 453mm long, -32 mm BB drop, DT Swiss 350 Boost rear hub.

18:41 You should test it with the chain in the biggest cog and deflated shock. This way you know for sure, this bike does not have a rear ward axle path, but some do, so then the chain will have to be longer, and different suspension designs have the widest part a different part of the travel. So it's best to cycle it trough the whole travel and look to know for sure. But yours starts with level chain stay and axle path pivots to the front so the wheelbase shortens, but with a rear ward axle path like on heigh pivot bikes the bike gets longer further in you are in the travel, so you get more chain growth.

About 25 years ago I pressed some bottom bracket bearing cups into a brand new aluminum Haro Group 1 Elite cruiser frame, and they went in about as tight as the top headset bearing cup in this video. The frame cracked at the bottom bracket after riding it a few times. It shouldn't be more than a few thousandth's oversize (maybe .003" max?) for an interference fit. Otherwise it would stress the aluminum too much, and it could eventually fail. As soon as it started going in crooked I would have stopped right there. They say that some lessons cost more than others, and the good ones are very expensive. ;)

9:32 If the head tube was to spec and head set cup was the correct size it would have went in smoothly and evenly, it did on my Geometron G1. You need to make sure the size is correct, and put it on evenly, gently press it, if it goes in skewed it's a sign of bad tolerances in the head tube. Chris King has great tolerances, so it will be a struggle to get it into a head tube that is oversized, ovalized, and generally just bad tolerances. If the frame head tube is undersized, it might be possible to ream and face it to get it to spec, but if it's oversized then you are screwed.

The top cup was pressed in crooked, but more importantly I believe your crown race is upside down.

The crown race is the correct way, it can clearly be seen at 10:48 This crown race has a downward taper and is thicker than most. But the inner section that should touch the inner race of the bearing is on top.

That gap in the fork tube could really be problems in the long run. Dirt and grime could get stuck there and scratch the bearing and the frame.

You get what you pay for. If you're looking for a "good deal" you'll end up with a Deluxe. You should really consider getting a Rockshox Super Deluxe or a Float X2. The deluxe is a entry-level shock.

Love the wheels I have them on both my bikes.

2:33 Add a MegNeg to that Deluxe Select and it'll feel So much better. It's about an $80 upgrade.

Would expect ZS44 tube diameter to be 43.95mm so 43.5 would be tight.

Where did you get your trusty Spaten-Maßkrug? Greetings from Bavaria.

You should get a super deluxe, the deluxe is an all-out xc shock and your trail bike a beefier shock which is funny
