I Built My Own Presence Detection Sensor!

After taking a look at the Aqara FP1 Sensor a few weeks back, noticing it's lack of availability and price tag, I decided tried to build my own presence detection sensor with a much tighter budget. Both of these are mmWave sensors used for Human Presence Detection in rooms where there is no motion and can detect the smallest amount of movement. In this video, I show you what I used, how I installed it and how to integrate it with ESPHome and Home Assistant in your Smart Home. Finally we look at how well it compares to the Aqara FP1?

If I had to wager a guess, I think that the faster detection speed but reduce feature set compared to the Aqara go hand in hand. The Aqara must be doing some sort of processing to determine the movement direction, etc, which would contribute to the slower detection time. Essentially your sensor just yells "I saw something" immediately, while the Aqara checks a few things first before letting you know.
@EverythingSmartHome

That was my guess too but very hard to know for sure!

@@EverythingSmartHome well they HAVE to have some increased calculation time. To know which direction a person is moving they need to take multiple readings over a period of time to know where the person started and where they moved to.
@dozog
@dozog 2 жыл бұрын
I had a similar thought. It's possible the Aqara has two (or more) sensors built in that it needs to correlate to get additional speed, direction, noise data. (It would surprise me if that took a few seconds though. But it could be that they do some kind of sample/sleep scheme for power reduction )

You CAN set the sensitivity on this sensor. Not sure why you haven't in this video. I had to turn mine way down to prevent detecting very minute motions. You'd have be not breathing and stone cold to not trigger it. I can send over an esphome config if you like. I also don't understand why people want to pair PIR with mmwave, as PIR isn't inherently quicker. It seems you've tried to compensate for a lack of sensitivity adjustment here with latency adjustment, which makes it slower. Mine turns the lights on the instant I come into the room. It's not possible for it to be any faster.

@@thesimbon That's a good question, but the ESP8266 is not known for being frugal. Given the price of energy I like to keep the consumption of anything that's on 24/7 to a minimum, and since Lewis already mentioned coupling it with a PIR for room entry detection this seemed like an easy win.

How about RCWL-0516 microwave detection , they only work when something approximately human sized moves, can be tuned, works with arduino, esp, etc.. Very cheap.. Good if used as a latch (switch on light when movement detected, then off when movement is detected again).. Not 100% sure I believe there is a more advanced sensor that gives out distance value (voltage) so you can determine entering or exiting.
@HATipsByLarry
@HATipsByLarry 2 жыл бұрын
The RCWL 0516 is a doppler effect sensor. So it detects the movement of water (human body is 60% water on average). Only problem with this sensor (i have several of them and tested them) is that it will go through walls, glass, etc. for 5 meters so you have to be careful where you place the sensor plus its not sensitive enough to detect very small movements more then a meter or 2 away from the sensor. I've had it go crazy when it rained outside for example. Very cheap, but not good for home automation.
@DirkDulfer
@DirkDulfer 2 жыл бұрын
@@HATipsByLarry I have rcwl-0516s connected to my Espresense 'nodes'. They are indeed sensitive and trigger on many things. I limit/direct the detection area with a piece of aluminum foil in the case, which made them a lot more reliable. Updated the Espresense code to support software debouncing, similar to the latency setting in this video. It is a bit of work, and require some fiddling to tune the detection area, but definitely more affordable than the modules in this video and combines multiple sensors in a single device. You could even decide to add a PIR to it.

Hi, great guide and and awesome that you share this with us. I am looking to make this but found that DFrobot also has a smaler sensor mmWave Radar Sensor Arduino-Human Presence Detection Wiki - DFRobot You think this will work also, similar spec but on the 5.8GHz band. And cheeper. Want to do around 10pcs so finding a similar but cheaper sensor would be awsome.

There is now also a presence sensor from Tuya which is much cheaper than Aqara FP1 and also more available. maybe you want to test that one too?

Could you do a video on how to install deepstack GPU on windows? Getting Nvidia Cuda and cudnn installed properly is giving a lot of people trouble, myself included. Thanks for your informative, easy to follow videos! You’ve made my home automation endeavors a breeze

Does it detect spiders walking around the room? 😃 Great video BTW, thanks for that. I'm ordering one right now and looking forward to do some soldering 😉

What do you think about thermal occupancy sensors, like the AMG8833? A guy in the LTT Jasco video comments said he built a great solution for just $30 using that sensor, he says the the system can detect body heat and know if the room is in use, even if you're laying on the couch and not moving. Would fix the window curtain issue for sure!

Fantastic project, thank you for the tutorial. I'll definitely be looking into building some of these. How do you deal with light/dark in this case? Most PIR sensors also have an adjustable range in which they will activate.

Hi, I have a quite big open room, including kitchen, living room and dinning room in one. Kind of want 2 of them in the same location, directed in different directions. Is there any intelligence here or will they just interfere with each other? I guess you can put some metal in the back to make some shielding. Being able to use different frequencies or codes would be great. Any such features?
