I love that we’re getting into the quiet switches era because up until recently there were very few options. I like my fancy loud as hell keyboard for when I’m at home but at the office? The options I had were either the laptops keyboard that sucks, a membrane 5$ keyboard that sucks, or some Logitech also membrane variant that costs 100€ and is almost as bad as the laptops keyboard.

silent mx switches have been around for a loooong time though, maybe not dead silent but definitely better than membrane in terms of sound.

I LOOOOATH noisy switches, and noise in general. So much so, that you're rarely find me listening to music while I work, and NEVER have background noise like TVs, etc. Yuck!! I prefer peaceful silent bliss of nature and sounds, which is why I desire remote only work. Ironically, I also love having lots of children, who are decidedly NOT quiet, LOL!!! ♥

The H81 sounds kinda nice for a supposedly quiet board. I'm wondering now if you could do a challenge to replicate the sound of Topre with mechanical switches.

To answer your question about hippos, no they're not quiet 😂 I live in Kenya & I've been to Maasai Mara where we stayed at a lodge near the Mara river. At night & early morning you could hear them moving around & occasionally getting into some fights. I legit thought there were trucks in the area, that's how loud they were.
@MangoTangoFox Жыл бұрын
Surprisingly even without all the special pre-made foams I actually think Betty won in terms of quality and quietness of the sound. There's a couple things you could do to make it significantly quieter: 1. Sit the entire keyboard FLAT (not on the raised flip out legs) on at least 1cm of closed cell packing foam (you definitely have some if you have product boxes lying around). 1-3 keyboard mats, especially foam+felt ones, would also work but cost like 30-50 bucks vs the free foam. This will heavily isolate the board from the desk, IMO making everything sound a lot better, and completely removing the bass-ey reverberations that happen into the desk especially in the spacebar (or the snappy bottom out of heavy bump tactiles). You can simulate the difference by just trying your board on the desk, and then on your mattress. 2. Using car dampener, rolled paper towel, painters tape, or various other combinations of things to significantly fill up the space bar. The adhesive foams used in the video help a little bit, but really filling the bar up can do so much more. Similar can also be done to all of the long modifier keys even the ones without stabilizers. Using an alternate space bar of a softer material like polycarbonate can also help. 3. Using a switch dampening pad on top of the space bar switch, or improvising it by using a little rectangle of the adhesive foam on the inner wall of the space bar, right above or below the switch, so that it comes in contact with the switch at the bottom out (basically like the cherry + north-facing switch interference, but intentional, and dampened). It may take a couple tries to get the positioning right, but the bottom out can turn into a thud instead of a clack, stopping both the switch and the stabilizers from bottoming out, without making it feel mushy or preventing actuation.

before i started getting into this stuff i tried to foam my steelseries apex pro (aluminum plate that is also the body, so kinda hopeless). i cut the foam into pieces and got it into every crevice inside the chassis and it made next to no difference. then i used double sided tape to put more foam, 4mm thick, on the bottom of the case, externally...made a world of difference even despite having a desk pad already

I'm going to go with Betty's for just a hair quieter, but I like the look of Jake's more. I'm really liking that silent keyboards are becoming more prominent. As somone who has a pretty high end sound setup, and spends quite a bit of time typing while live either in meetings or in presentations, the noise gate often isnt enough. I tend to hit the key's pretty hard and bottom out alot when i'm typing quickly, particularly when I take notes and I've recently found this channel, which I'm really enjoying. Particularly when it's a cheaper build as I am very budget limited. I recently purchased a Keychron K4 pro, and while it's miles better than my old Corsair Strafe, I am planning to mod it to make it quieter after the holidays, so I'll continue watching and learn the best and least expensive way to do this. Thanks for the video.

“Hippos are silent” a google found this “hippos honking calls can be up to 115db and can be heard over a mile away” to put that into perspective a chainsaw is about 110-120 or a jet engine at full takeoff about 250 ft away is about as loud as a hippo. So they are loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage in a short period of time. Before looking it up I knew they were loud but I didn’t know how loud and that’s crazy.

I don't have a full set of silents but I got a huge set of linear tester switches, including 6 different silents. Silent boba, WS, gecko, heartbeat, coral, and alpaca. By far my favorite was the gecko. Not the most silent of them, but certainly the best feel and sound (quietly thocky). All of the other silent switches felt noticeably scratchy and you could hear the scratch slightly. Lubing might remedy it but I was lookng for the best silent stock switches. Unfortunely Kinetic Labs just ran out of stock on geckos and won't restock for about another 2 months.

I think noise level is about the same, but the sounds are different. There are phone apps to measure noise level that you can use when you do a typing test. I'd also recommend typing on it like you would when you are actually typing, which I imagine might be harder and faster than what you showed in the short typing clip. Also, I think you're not supposed to use blue/painter's/masking tape in keyboards with batteries. An alternative is called wire harness electrical tape. It's used in automotive engines and is high heat-resistant and also has innate sound dampening qualities. I have no idea if it leaves behind a residue, but reading reviews on specific brands of it should answer that. I, too, use Royal Kludges, only I've been too scared/annoyed/lazy to remove the feet to unscrew the case from any of them, so I haven't had the chance to really mod one yet, but I really want to try that tape in my M75. I currently have Gateron Pro 3.0s and cherry profile PBT keycaps on it. It's not silent, but I like the sound profile. I do want a silent set of switches, as well, though, which led me to this video. I'm looking at Sea Salt Silent, Gamakay Pegasus, Akko Fairy Silents, and Redragon Stars A120. Click and Thock rated the Redragon switches surprisingly highly but I'd really like to see how they compare directly to the Pegasus.

Haiz, after being here for over a year, seeing them putting pe foam and tape mod the board to have a silent build is so wrong. Unfortunately for me though I've once again decided that my ideal board is something which doesn't actually exist and would be extremely difficult and/or expensive to reproduce.. Imagine: A 96% hybrid (see Tecware Phantom 96 layout) With a slim case (like Tecware Phantom L, or Nuphy Air series) Short actuating switches (Like Outemu LP, Gateron LP or literally any "speed" switch... but like, silent and light springs) XDA keycaps (barely fits the Outemu LP and completely bottoms out on Gateron LP.. I just like the spherical top and uniform profile) And dual wired/wireless capability So far I hit a snag on step 1 as the only 96% hybrid layout boards I can find are discontinued, plus they're not slim and not wireless
