I will say you have some 🥜 doing edge retention tests with that many cuts in rope. People have no idea the effort it takes to accomplish i appreciate that you do tho, incredibly results btw

Sad part is he speeds it up to save people from being bored and most don't realize that it takes him longer doing the cut tests than it did to sharpen it. Although watching this video I got to thinking and not sure if its been done if anyone has shown strops with different compounds / emulsions under high magnification think that would be interesting least to any experienced sharpener or one who cares.

Hi Pete, this really is an awesome video that demystifies "super steel" sharpening. It isn't difficult nor prohibitively expensive to sharpen with some informed choices in abrasives. Thanks for this really well documented video showing the process and the macro/microscope captures of the blade edge after each phase of your progression. 1800 cuts is an incredible result that shows proof of performance. For somebody who is always extremely modest regarding your sharpening skill, it is obvious you are good at it. I can't think of anybody that has a broader range in knife sharpening experience that you between all of the various systems and styles that you've presented on your channel, along with the fact that you've sharpened every cutlery steel known to man AND have then tested those edges I couldn't really tell because of the fast-forward speed, but when you are about finished with a grit and ready to advance to the next phase in your sharpening sequence, it is really good practice to really lighten up the pressure on the knife for a final series of passes. that will help you with burr minimization. Outdoors55 has some pretty good videos recently showing and demonstrating. To my somewhat untrained eye, your ragged edge on the "medium/coarse" and then the more refined, but with what appears to still be some visible burr after your "fine" sharpening is indicative that you're using pressure to make sure you are cutting into the steel and maintaining constant pressure for the entirety of each phase of your progression. Your scratch pattern looks deep to me. If you lighten your pressure as you finish each stage in your progression, you will start to refine the scratch pattern and leave the burr on the edge much smaller for a given grit size. This will result in less effort required at the subsequent finer grits in your sharpening progression and help make the final stropping steps easier. Just a suggestion.

I’ve had excellent results using 3 micron gunny juice on the soft rough side and 1 micron gunny juice on the stiff smooth side. I feel like I’m less likely to over-apply the spray. The 3 micron seems to do a really efficient job bringing back a used edge. Previously I would opt for a 20 degree microbevel from a sharpmaker to maintain my edges between sharpenings, but lately stropping at 17 degrees seems to be working just as well. I really love your content. It’s impressive to see your results and it keeps me motivated to try different techniques and equipment.

I picked one of these knives up after your first video on it and I will say it’s a different edge somehow than what I’m used to. Normally when I get a new knife from spyderco or chris reeve they will shave hair off my arm so well you’d think you could shave with it. The sage was sharp, cut a few hairs, but didn’t make me think I would want to shave with it. But when I cut paper, cardboard and tape for the first time , wow. Great knife so far and glad to see I should be able to sharpen it with things I have 👍👍

My favorite knife and steel to sharpen, is the Vanadis 4 Extra on the TRC Mille Cuori. It takes an ultra sharp edge, even if you use just sandpapers,similar sharpness to the edge you can get on Carbon Moras! Suprisingly easier to get it that sharp,than I thought it would be. Perfect heat treatment and probably my favorite steel out there.

Cedric As you were able to microchip the Rex-121 and Cruwear against a safety pin, you also now need to do that test with Spyderco CPM-15V BBB steel. The reason for this would be to see the comparative durability of the three steels, and since CPM-15V BBB is right up there in Rex 121 Territory in rope cuts. What say you, since you do have the steels to do this durability/toughness test???

Rex 121, PM60, CPM 15V, Maxamet and other high-alloy steels, real monsters in terms of wear resistance, are all easy to sharpen, you just need diamond plates, they don't even have to be expensive (more expensive ones last longer and are more homogeneous in the grit). So diamond plates or CBN plates and a strop with diamond compound is the answer to sharpening top tier super steels. I use diamond plates from Atoma (I also have Naniwa Diamond Pro stones) and diamond paste from Stroppy Stuff. If you want, you can also use a hard ceramic whetstone for honing (not sharpening), I use my Shapton Pro 5000 ceramic stone, it is very hard, feels like the blade is gliding over glass, but it does its job.

Have you tried stropping on a paper backing rather than leather? I typically do my stropping with 3.5 micron diamond paste on some smooth paper glued down to a piece of float-glass. With that I can get an edge on my Aus8 daily carry that stays shaving sharp for about 2 weeks of pretty constant use.

Thanks for doing these videos, I know they have to suck to do on these super steels. I think you'll get the best performance with this particular steel by doing a low to medium grit edge on the Tsprof or KME. I personally prefer the Tsprof, but I got started on the KME, so I know you can get great results from both systems

is paper of phonebook instead sheat paper better test material? is angle of stropping less than angle of sharpening with stone?
@Wolf_K
@Wolf_K 13 күн бұрын
Phonebook paper and newsprint require a far cleaner and sharper edge to cut without tearing. An edge that can push cut printer paper may not push cut newsprint but an edge that _can_ push cut newsprint will easily do the same on printer paper. Printer paper is a rather low standard. A true high performance test media is Rizla green cigarette papers at 17gsm. If you can Pushcut against the grain on those then your edges are optimal for push cuts and shaving.

Hype really bothers me on a purely logical level. Why would it be hard to cut Rex121 or Maxamet when the Diamond abrasive is harder than the metals? Skelontized handles are stronger than solid steel ones…(Mike Stewart of BRKT actually said this in a video years ago). On skelonization “It actually makes it stronger” - Mike Stewart. “By this reasoning the strongest configuration would be no handle at all!” - Cliff Stamp’s response. 😂 More carbides equal better. 😂 lol
@ryanjones7190
@ryanjones7190 14 күн бұрын
This steel is not necessarily hard to sharpen but since there are more carbides the diamond abrasives dont cut as deep, making the grits feel finer and taking a lot longer to sharpen. Since you are taking more strokes it makes any mistakes more prominent and harder to remove. That being said ive got some of my best edges on rex 121

@ It only took me 14 minutes to regrind this exact model on Atoma 140 from stock bevel to ~6-8°ps and less than 1 minute to apex on DMT 600. Yes, I feel the difference but it’s still easily ground.

The knife wasn’t hard to sharpen at all. I did it using the Work Sharp Precision Adjust on a livestream. 320, 800, ceramic for deburr. All good. It’s a great knife.
@ryanjones7190
@ryanjones7190 14 күн бұрын
@Wolf_K yeah as long as you have diamond stones it's not that bad. Tbh I expected it to be worse but on low grit stones it's fine. I think the problem lies in when people only a 600 grit stone to regrind the edge. That makes it feel like you aren't taking material off. Also 6-8dps is wild that thing must cut like a laser beam.
@Wolf_K
@Wolf_K 14 күн бұрын
@@ryanjones7190 ~6-8°ps is the secondary bevel, the apex (micro) is ~15°ps so it can still easily support the edge; but yeah, it cuts very well. I run almost all my knives low like this.
