The guitar is called a "National" Style-O (National Reso-Phonic Guitars is the brand) or you can also call it a "resonator guitar". His one was made in the 30s I think it was. There are different styles but his iconic model here has a full body made of chromed metal. Hence the very special tone. Its super heavy to carry.
@offroad4x4nhlife453 күн бұрын
They have single cones/dual cones an tri cones resonator guitars, used to be played in delta blues music
There are few songs ever written that make you want to break your heart over and over by listening to it. This is one of them. Mark's gift is humanizing emotion.

This song moves me more than any other song in this world. I requested it awhile ago- don't know if this is my request but as long as you got to hear it and share it----------- that makes me happy. It's a National Guitar. 10 out of 10 for me.

I was in Hamburg in 2010 at a Mark Knopfler concert on his "Get Lucky" tour. I was 40 years old at the time and when I saw so many visitors who were much older than me, I thought for the first time that I was getting old😅. But I didn't regret it and enjoyed experiencing a live concert with Mark and his great band. I was able to buy the first half recording of the concert on a stick with the logo on it and download the rest of the concert online a day later. The stick is in my display case with the memorabilia that mean a lot to me in my life. Greetings from Northern Germany 🇩🇪❤️

While this is from a Knopfler concert, its actually a Dire Straits song, of course written by Knopfler. The original studio cut from D.S. is worth a listen.

One of the best memories I have of this song was a few years back we had the opportunity to visit Stratford Upon Avon and arrived for the celebration of Shakespeare's 500th birthday. Upon leaving the bus, a local townsperson met us and offered everyone a slice of birthday cake as we toured the village. There was a guy dressed in a jester's costumer wandering the square with an acoustic guitar. This was the song he was playing.

Romeo and Juliet was originally recorded with Dire Straits. But Dire Straits was basically Mark Knopfler. His solo stuff is great, as are his soundtracks (Local Hero is fantastic). Knopfler is the king of dynamics. Like Telegraph Road starts so so quiet and then it builds and builds.

It is called a dobro guitar. "This resonator guitar was made by Dobro in Los Angeles, California around 1933-1937. The name originated in 1928 when the Dopyera brothers formed the Dobro Manufacturing Company. "Dobro" is both a contraction of "Dopyera brothers" I love the sound of it. Some people play it like a traditional guitar while others turn it upwards and either sit or stand while using a slide rod.

This was my intro to Dire Straits, first heard performed live on the TV show Fridays, ABC's answer to Saturday Night Live. I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. I have always been enamored of the sound of the steel-body resonator guitar, which is usually played with a slide, but to me sounds like a cross between a guitar and a banjo. Knopfler is an absolute genius in whatever he's done.

🥲I love Mark Knopfler... from the beginning, and now 40 plus years later. I'll always tune in for a Knopfler and / or Dire Straits reaction. I see someone in the comments has already filled you in on the Resonator guitar info. Since you mentioned that you wanted to hear another of Mark's signature soaring solos, may I suggest a few songs that you've not yet reacted to here: "Once Upon a Time in the West" from Alchemy Live, as well as "calling Elvis" (Mark's playing will knock you socks off) and their live performance of "Brothers in Arms" (I know you watched the official video, but you are missing out it you don't see this live version... Mark's emotional solo still gives me chills), both from LIVE - On The Night. Happy Winter Solstice!

This and Tunnel Of Love are two of the best tracks off the Making Movies album. Tunnel Of Love is more of a rocker where this is more ballad so you get a balance between the two. Roller Girl is a good fun song as well from the album. Mark is a fantastic guitarist and one of the few the finger plays a lot of the time so he has a distinctive sound. Dire Straits was so different from other music when they first appeared in the late 70's and I've been a fan ever since.

The guitar is a resonator or resophonic guitar, also commonly known as a Dobro due to the original manufacturer. It is louder and has greater sustain than a normal acoustic guitar. They were normally used in country, bluegrass and folk music and often played with a slide.

So here's Mark's lyrical genius on full display - "There's a place for us, you know the movie song" - There's a famous musical film called "West side story" which is basically a modern adaptation of the Romeo and Juliet storyline. And one of the most famous songs from that film is called "Somewhere", and the main line in the chorus goes - "There's a place for us"..... (You know the movie song...). Genius.

But live, you get to see the quiet interactions and signals between band members, the subtle guitar switch, the sadness that permeates the song in Mark's face and demeanor. The studio version might have more clarity or other differences (I haven't listened to it yet) but I'll take a well-filmed live version over studio any time. Or...both.
