'I Can't Be Attached to Your Whack Tattoo Idea!' Inking Friends | Tattoo Artists React

We all have 10,000 different tattoo ideas swirling in our heads, and if you're friends with a tattoo artist, chances are they're going to have to hear each and every one of them. It gets tricky when your friends and family come up to you with a particularly atrocious tattoo idea. What do you say? Do you hurt their feelings? Let them down easy? We asked our panel of tattoo artists how to handle this awkward conversation and their answers did not disappoint.
Welcome to Season 21 of Tattoo Artists React! I bet you didn’t think we’d make it this far, did you? We certainly didn’t. This time around we’ve gathered a bunch of our favorite tattooers and asked them a bunch of questions… you know, like we’ve done every other season. But that doesn’t mean it’s not going to be a ton of fun! Like, you’ve probably eaten french fries 10,000 times but when you see them on the menu you still order them. I’m rambling. I heard a good piece of advice once and I always tell it to people who tell me about their tattoo plans. "Put the image/designs as your background image on your phone, and if you're not tired of it after 6 or 12 months of saving up the money for it, then go for it."

Good advice!! I did the opposite for my first tattoo. The background image I had on my phone for seven years inspired the tattoo :D

I think it heavily depends on the person getting tattooed, I personally just like the art on my skin. My favorite tattoos are tattoos my artist came up with without any input from me. Everyone is different with different reasons for liking them

Funny enough I got a piece on my leg that was from a t shirt I own 😂 My friend was like that would be a cool tat! And I was like you know what you're right, and got it inked when the convention rolled into town. I've had it for 8 years now and I still freaking love it. The T shirt has been missing for a few weeks though....probably on the bottom of a laundry T shirt pile tbh Actually flew out to Florida and got a piece on my forearm last month by the artist that did the calf piece haha!

I like their honesty. When I got my first tattoo, I was so hyped and gave a long list with shit that has to be in the design. At the whole job it felt like the artist was so sick of my idea but didn't talk it out and did it anyway. Now I often hear "Mhhh... Nice, but not my cup of tea" or "ahh... Ok."... Don't misunderstand me it's a nice boat in a bottle tattoo but there's to much happening ....Now I'm always a little afraid to go to the shop "don't be a problem! Ask the artist for his honest opinion" 😂

Exactly! There’s only so much capacity for finite detail (and color, if it’s a color tattoo). It can look cluttered and will change over time.

If I ever go to a tattoo artist and get a bunch of questions and suggestions to change it in a fundamental way, I’d know my ideas are shit.. so far I’ve only ever gotten “that’s awesome! I’d love to do this”, “I’m actually super excited to do this piece”, “are you serious? I would love to do that!!”. ..so I know I’m good hahaha

Honesty in opinion is a great quality in a tattoo artist. I originally wanted a snake wrapped around my forearm and my artist explained to me how that just won’t have the effect I intend for it to have and the design will be unclear to viewers. That was good to hear!

I’ve drafted my tattoo idea and have noticed one should ask two questions. One is the most important. 1. Will it turn off people when they see it? You don’t want a tattoo making dates leave. 2. Is it a terrible idea? Side note. People know I would be honest. That is why they’ve never gone to me to ask.
