1:57 INCORRECT!! The Leaf Shield is not technically a "blocking" sheild in the traditional sense! Rather, you summon 4 floating leaves around you that circle you, and then you shoot/throw said leaves towards to attack - and since this is the weapon that Air Man is weak against, you can use it to attack and beat Air Man in a much shorter amount of time (compared to just using the normal Mega Buster)... but with all that research and effort done for this translation... The proper translation of "time barrage glitch" is "I even tried mashing on the start button," while it doesn't help you hit multiple times in this game, you warp out for a bit and become invincible until you warp back in, while projectiles continue to move. This helps a lot, for example, in the Bubeam boss stage, where it's very difficult to dodge the shots, but if you just mash start, they all pass through you and you don't get hit. It also resets your vertical velocity, so you can use it to help dodge the mines when you fall in the water areas and make extra large jumps. But this doesn't work against Air Man, because the tornados DON'T keep moving. they vanish until you warp back in, and re-appear exactly where they were. So what the guy is actually saying is the glitch is completely useless in this fight.
@DoubleATam2 жыл бұрын
Ah, this is really cool! I like seeing retranslations like this. As much as my heart has a place for the old stilted one which makes the silly gamer rage sound poetic and inspirational, I like having something that captures the feel better. That said, there's a few misconceptions with Mega Man 2 in there!: 1:04 タイム連打 "Time Barrage" is not the glitch from Mega Man 1 that reset s on pause. rather, it... simply refers to mashing pause to slow down incoming attacks and let you dodge them more easily; in MM2, it also resets your vertical speed, letting you sail over Leaf Shield. However, it's also notable for accidentally glitching Wood Man's AI if he's jumping, causing him to airjump every time you do it, which can cause him to land on your face (though you can also do it on purpose to render him helpless). As for its uselessness against tornadoes, it's probably just because the patterns are notably absurd to dodge, and resetting your air speed kinda makes it worse. 1:58 Also, Leaf Shield does not protect you from projectiles in Mega Man 2, in fact, Air Man's tornadoes block it entirely just like all your other shots. Sorry Smash fans! (Mega Man "shield" type weapons are often mocked for actually being pretty bad for defense, shielding from only 1 bullet per use in MM4-6. In 2 specifically, it's *just* a lingering sprite that does damage, so it's almost exclusively meant as a counter against crowds of really weak enemies like Tellies in Crash Man's stage or Pipis in Air Man's stage.) However, it's Air Man's weakness: he takes more damage from it literally because it jams his fan. 0:59 Finally, kind of a nitpick because narratively you can probably imagine Rock jumping around all anime like, but it seems pretty unlikely that they were trying to "jump" past Air Man to hit him before the wind blows. The player is referring to how after 3 volleys of tornadoes (with the wind pushing you against the wall every time so you can't not be there), Air Man switches sides and conveniently leaves room for you to stand behind him before he starts attacking again. It's almost impossible not to hit him at least once at this point, but they still can't do it forever, and may also take big contact damage if they're not ready to jump over Air Man when he forces them out. PS: Sera's name is actually a reference to a material in the Mega Man universe, more commonly known in english as "Ceratanium". As you might imagine, it's basically "titanium but better", and Dr. Light invented it. It's known to be used in Mega Man's armor, Cut Man's scissors, Metal Man's saws, Wood Man's leaves, and Hard Man.
@GrizonII2 жыл бұрын
The “Time Barrage” also gives you brief invincibility frames in Mega Man 2 (presumably that’s why it’s also been translated as “Time Barrier” even though that’s further from the original term); it’s notably very effective against Boobeam Trap’s projectiles (since they move so quickly, mashing pause will often give enough invincibility for them to pass through completely). I haven’t tested it but I’d guess that Air Man’s projectiles are too large and slow to be able to go through them completely with it.
@DoubleATam2 жыл бұрын
@@GrizonII It occurred to me, but I couldn't figure out how to actually do it against anything other than Boobeam (and I'm having trouble finding videos showing it) so I figured it was less likely to be what the song meant. But fair point bringing it up!

Hmm is it cringe to post my own take on the lyrics?... bah heck it, i'll be cringe: I suddenly noticed That whenever I play this game I get stuck By dying in the same level always at the same place I'm gonna see it through I've gotta get past these annoying disappearing blocks but I keep tripping up and falling to my doom (1) I know that Item 2 would me carry me across, so all I gotta do is get it from another level Every time, though, every time, though A-air Man just freaking won't go down no matter what! (2) No matter how I try to dodge I just get hit by his tornado attack (3) I get his back, blast away! But then immediately he catches on and blasts me back away with his wind (4) I even mashed! the! pause! menu! (5) just to slow it down but these tornadoes are impossible to get around! So then I think I got it, the ultimate plan (6) I gotta hold on to that E-Tank right up until the end! ... I suddenly noticed I'm missing so much health already again? If I don't use my E-Tank now I am not gonna last (7) I'm gonna see it through But this level's hard enough without the boss and I don't even stand a chance 'cause I keep losing lives I know that the Leaf Shield would wreck Air Man, so all I gotta do is get it from another level Every time, though, every time, though Woo-ood Man also just won't go down no matter what! No matter how I try to dodge I just get hit by his leaf rain attack I get his back, keep away! But then immediately he catches on comes back and keeps me pinned anyway I even mashed! the! pause! menu! just to slow it down but then he leapt across the screen and stomped me into the ground! (8) So then I think I got it, the ultimate plan I gotta hold on to that E-Tank right up until the end! ... (won't go down no matter what!) (9) (1) ~ the meter's weird and "doom" is probably a bit dramatic for annoyed gamer speak, but I wanted a rhyme. plus, i think the speaker has some tendency to overdramatize. I was gonna have "pit" and keep ambiguous whether i meant lava or bottomless (2) ~ I still really like the old translation for how it puts "air man" near the end of the line, it has the fun side effect of emphasizing the character's presence and making the title snappy, and I like to think it's part of why the song took off in the english youtube megamansphere. But part of me wants to keep an elongated "air man" at the start not just because that's how the original song goes but also so that it can sync with how the music video reveals him. So I at least committed to making it so the latter half of the line feels good to repeat at the end of the song. "just freaking" is weird filler but it fits the tone and you can just semantically ignore it, which i guess makes the most appropriate title(s) for this translation "Air Man won't go down (no matter what)", which is not my favorite but i think is ok (3) ~ I fuse the old and new translations for taste and meter. more on that at the end of the post (4) ~ "blasts me" is impossible to sing, just say "blows me". i just saw a wordplay opportunity and took it (5) ~ this is my take on Time Barrage: they're just mashing pause. I even looked up the term just to see if any JP source had a definition for it, and I did find one. I also noticed a machine translation gave me "consecutive strike" and "mash" as possible translations for "renda" so. This seems to me like a memey ironic way to pretend mashing pause is a secret technique and i have to assume it was a thing before the song, and since we don't have a similar thing in the englishspace, I took it out. On top of that, I went with the original version of the song's emphasis for it, because though i love the Nekokan arrangement, the idea that every beat is a pause is gold to me. (6) ~ I thought I'd keep at least a little bit of what I think is the player's attempt at sounding cool -- it's hard to balance that with the gamer rage vibe. Also I decided to put in "so" instead of "but" because, thinking about it, the solution follows from what they just said: I can't stop getting hit, therefore, just heal (7) ~ I kept this ambiguous as to whether they're talking about the stage or the boss, since i think it's significant that both chip away at your health and lives. (8) ~ while the song doesn't make it explicit that this is referring to the odd wood man pause glitch, and i'm probably reaching, I think that's the MUCH funnier narrative: the player tries to cheese the game with pause strats and accidentally glitches Wood Man into countering this strategy. I tried it in-game and it feels like it could happen. Sadly I had trouble wording this in a way that made it feel like unavoidable damage and therefore lead into the "ultimate plan". (9) ~ remember this bit? this fragment accidentally became ambiguous in a way that elevated it and I immediately decided i'd keep it! The main reason I'm embarassed of my own "localizations" is that I don't actually know japanese, so in the end I just go off of other translations and what i think better fits the context. Plus I like keeping bits from other translations I like, so I'd never post it without them being credited nearby. And yet, the nature of translation as rewriting a work means that even though I want to see a "best" translation, I think it'd be good to see lots of attempts. I see some of that in some fandoms of song-related series like Kagerou Project, but I don't see enough with other stuff. Like, I'm sitting on a translation of Kawaita Sakebi from old YGO anime and I feel I can't really do anything with it

I wanted to figure out what "tawa sina ijo" might actually mean, or rather when such a phrase might naturally occur, and the best I could come up with was that it would be used in the context of playing a board game, as part of a sentence describing the action of moving one's piece towards another player's piece. I feel like a "you that has the quality of being a thing" is a fairly good way to describe a players piece in a board game. I hope none of that was wrong, I'm not exactly fluent in toki pona, and haven't been practicing recently. It's been a while since Misali last uploaded a lesson, and I made the mistake of deciding to not seek out any other resources on the language, expecting the series to release regularly, and now enough time has passed that I refuse to change my mind.

I'm kinda surprised to have missed this for so long when versions were being played bimonthly here. Perhaps it did come up before, but the classic-style thumbnail made it look like an existing video? In 2022 I learned the Kiwikenobi version for some reason, and started to enjoy finding new variations of the classic song online. Most of the covers fall into one or two categories, but this is pretty unique! All of the lines translated are done so differently than before, yet still represent the original lyrics well, and other additions like each form of the words being displayed alongside notes make it pretty cool! My biggest irk with this is how dated the instrumentals sound, but the vocal quality makes up for it. Gonna share this to quite a few people! P.S. "[ ]" between words is meant to indicate a slight pause. motivating example being the line "no matter what I do I just get hit[ ]by the leaves in the air" -- without the slight pause after the word "hit" you end up slightly... off, and it trips you up. I didn't annotate every place I could, because I was worried about it getting noisy. However, there are probably a few places that I missed that would be really helpful. "(com)pletely" is spelled "completely" in the lyrics and sung ['pletely] as noted in the translation notes in the video. so i wrapped the silent part in parenthesis because I didn't want to remove it from the lyrics. ['cause] was spelled "cause" in the video. I read it as a shortening of (be)cause, so I insert an apostrophe indicating the missing prefix. probably nobody else cares, but it is technically an annotation I added, so I'm noting it here. If you're wondering why sometimes in these notes i've used "quotes" and sometimes [brackets], it's to avoid putting an apostrophe right next to quotation marks. That can be really hard to read in some fonts (including the one I'm using right now) The toki pona section felt... odd to type. something something keyboard layout. 'if for some reason you're pausing on every slide as part of the first time listening to this cover' i'm being called out directly. as for (why), i've never heard the original version(s) of this song so i'm more interested in your commentary than actually hearing what you've done with the song itself (on the first listen through at least. i'm sure i'll gain an appreciation for the actual song on repeat listens)

(also my guess for what air would rhyme with was 'care'. and i'm sure i'm not the only one but i see what you did with the little mi ken ala moli e pipi motif at the end)

Contextually, I'd probably interpret "tawa sina ijo" as something along the lines of "ugh, I'm just gonna go get your password". It's a bit of a stretch, to be sure, but its fun to try to force sensical meanings on nonsense.

1:50 Is this really off, though? I took the Japanese here to mean he made it up to Airman, which doesn't literally say that he fought Airman, but I'm not sure how they wouldn't from that position, unless you specifically interpret the implication as "I died right before Airman". But then, I've never played Megaman 2 myself. Also, with romaji I feel like you can do whatever you want as long as it's understandable to the people you want to be understood by. I never use it personally because I don't think it looks as good as kana/kanji and none of the Japanese text I see elsewhere is written in romaji, either, and I'm not transcripting Japanese text for people that don't know Japanese to read. I love this translation, though, especially as someone that doesn't have any context on Megaman 2 rooms/items/similar.

I'm Japanese, and I also don't think Misali's narrative is off. In Japansese "辿り着く" means "reach (successfully)", not "go towards". So the narrative in the Japanese lyrics is that the Gamer tries hard and makes it to (and most likely fights) Air Man again but soon loses.

The funny thing is, it's been an age and a half since I've actually played mega Man 2, but I don't think the leaf shield actually blocks air man's attacks? Or at least, the more important factor is it just does a *ton* of damage as his weakness and allows you to take him down in like two seconds if you get into point blank range.

As much as I love this version and all the work you put into it, I can’t find myself hating the old translation. The “everytime, somehow everytime” part is seared into my memory after listening to it for 10+ years. I always hated how it didn’t mention the time barrage glitch though. Overall, I absolutely loved this video and all the work you put into a song that I have a ton of memories with!

2:10 I feel called out I think in my case the reason I'm reading the notes first is a combination of: 1. I don't like leaving text in videos unread (and also I really enjoy reading your translation notes) 2. I'm always kinda hesitant when listening to songs I haven't heard before (because my brain's like "What if you don't like it?"), so this also doubles as a nice way to ease myself into the music before I go back and listen to the song all the way through I really enjoyed this translation/cover! Aside from it just being really fun to listen to overall, I also really liked that the last chorus was in toki pona! I think switching languages partway through a song is really fun - I loved it in tomo Napisa, and I love it here! (Also I loved the "mi ken ala moli e pipi" melody at the end, it was so fun to hear my first time through and be like "hey! I recognize that!!" and it fits really nicely with the subject of the song too :D ) (Edit: listening to this again and hey wait was that Caramelldansen in there, and also the lick????) (Edit 2: Okay the more I listen to it the more I swear there's just like, so many melodies put in the guitar solo, most of which I either don't recognize or don't know the name of. I'd love to see someone try and pick apart all the different songs/pieces that were referenced lol)

2:13 "so cool how you can just skip the first syllable in the word 'completely' and it's fine and it doesn't sound wrong" The lyrics that were sung: "...towards me and it's really unfair" Yeah you can completely skip that first syllable and no one will know.

I randomly found your video about paradoxs when I was about to go to sleep, obviously watched it. Then I went into your channel cause I liked your voice and the way you explain things. So then I saw one of your conlang critic series (and obviously had to google what that was since my knowledge of linguistics is nonexistent), then I was like hey I don't understand anything, but I am everything but stubborn so I saw your introduction to conlang (should have watched that one first) and now I'm here. Confused, but determined to understand your conlang series even though I get dizzy trying to because 1. linguistics are hard and 2. English isn't my first language. But hey I like your videos, and I'm excited to learn new things from you. xx
