In my head I hold a weird belief about a Super Mario mainline series which only includes home console games and also every 2D platformer after Super Mario 64 is not part of it because the series is now officially 3D. So every 2D platformer starting with New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the Super Mario 2D spinoff series, then there is Super Mario handheld spinoff series. All of these are Super Mario series. SMB1, SMB USA, SMB3, SMW, SM64, SMS, SMG, SMG2, SM3DW, SMO are unambiguously mainline Super Mario to me. SMB Lost Levels is weird because it feels more like just a level pack for SMB1 with no substantial gameplay changes. SM3DW I mainly consider mainline because otherwise there would a Nintendo home console with no Super Mario mainline game.
