The design was inherently screwed up by devs And they became aware of it much later. Although it is still a great game enjoyed by many for many reasons. The issue is the way casting got implemented on the classes. Which aren't affected by ability scores. So everybody's prime requisite optimally becomes vitality. Which is a huge fundamental flaw that happened to this game. I, however, don't play D2 in a way that exploits this. Although everybody and their mom does. For example, as Amazon, I'm putting most of my points into dex then str. Vitality comes in third. Because that is how the devs intended for ability scores to affect characters based on class.

i think breakpoints are one of the main reasons its so fun to build your character. you dont just mindlessly slap on every faster cast or faster attack rate item, because it improves in steps. for sorc there is no reason to get more fcr if you cant reach the 105 breakpoint after you have 65 fcr. so suddenly got item slots available for different options. min maxing within these options is amazing. and then you finally get the 35 fcr spirit or 20fcr amu and now you can get the 105 breakpoint or even the 200fcr!! that just feels amazing.

Hey, I've been playing this game for 20 years and it's nice to see a video explaining why it aged so well :). One quick note though, you talk about crafting. There is actually another system named "crafting" in D2 that gives orange items that can actually can be godly and used in playthrough. It's very simple but it works, you just put a blue items and the right components in the cube to get a semi-predictable result. Some recipes are garbage but some are great. Another note about itemization: what amazes me is that thanks to high and low level dueling some of the most valuable items to trade online are actually, blue, yellow and sometimes even white/grey items (for runewords). This means that even in the end game, ANY item rarity can actually be a GG find, especially online. And I think that is something that makes D2 rather unique in all the ARPGs I've tried. I also understand that all this maybe just couldn't fit in your video ^^.

Nice video. D2R got me back into playing Diablo for the first time in about 20 years. I love that the graphics were improved and that some long-standing bugs were fixed, and that they even added some new items in the last few years. I learned to keep some stam pots that drop on hand to keep that forced walking to nearly no time at all anymore. You were also very accurate about rarity of items. I was so curious about runes since they're so potentially powerful that I checked how their drops work. It's a bit ingenious how they check the highest possible rune(s) first if one does drop, but then work their way down to the more common ones until El or Eld is guaranteed at the end. There's no getting around the rarity, no matter how many chaos sanctuaries or cow levels or lower kurasts or pits you clear or check, it requires enough tries for the luck to go your way. When one finally appears, it's elation. OTOH, if I find an El Rune in the Pit I think of how many failed rolls it took to get there 😅.

I think the stamina mechanic is to stop low level characters from running past all the monsters. The AI is not smart, with a few quick steps you can avoid almost all monsters, but running out of breath when you have a horde of monsters running after you is a terrifying death. I think combining stamina and mana might be an improvement, getting stamina for free means it becomes a non issue fairly quick, encouraging builds to not put every point into vitality would be good imo.

I feel like you really glossed over the classes and their skill trees, because this is what really made the game shine for me. Every class had its own unique feel, and the trees allowed for some diverse character builds. I have done scores of Amazons over the years, and all of them had their own special flavor with their skill layouts. Bow/Crossbow tree? You could choose between specializing in magic/physical, fire, or ice, or mix and match to your heart's content. Spear and Javelin skills had physical melee, but also lightning melee, and javelin skills gave you options of chucking poison and lightning around, so many options. Then there was the passive tree, and if you were a true mad lad.lass, you could dump all of your points into this tree alone and take the best weapon you could find and apply it to monsters... also features Valkyrie, which for my money is the best minion in the game. Another key feature was a very engaging multiplayer, which allows you to team up with friends, or randos if you're feeling lucky. If you had a cohesive group, you could even have fun group games with themes. One group was based on the military tech of the phalanx, with a warcry Barb issuing buffs to his retinue of 7 Amazons, all wielding spears. Everyone had an Act 2 merc (because spears!!!), as well as 7 Zons using Decoys (with spears!!!) and Valkyries (using spears!!!)... not only effective, but made for some incredible screenshots that anyone taking a shot for every spear would have to call an ambulance afterwards. I even got to be the Impaler, a skill that approximately 0.00001% of Amazon players used, much less mained, due to the slow wind-up for the big damage output. I was on 'boss' duty... if a champion, rare, or unique showed up, it was my time to shine, mostly because the entirety of the group (especially after level 30) was just roflstomping everything on the screen that wasn't so high profile. Fun times, would do it again.

To me, Diablo is the definitive action role-playing game. There is no other franchise that embodies the genre as well as this one does. I first picked up a copy of Diablo 2 (the Battle Chest) a few years after release -- I've always been an FPS player, so I was late to the party. Since then, I've grown to love the role-playing genre as well as real-time strategy. I play FPS far less often now. I think FPS games are still amazing (and were my gateway to being a true gamer) but there is a finite-ness to them. Do the thing, get to the end. Done, now what? There is such an infinite replay factor to Diablo (the entire series) that doesn't exist in other types of games outside of other RPGs and series like Warcraft (including WoW). I have to agree with everything you said about the community. Each and every other player I've met has been extremely nice to talk with, friendly, willing to help (random party, advice etc), and they all pool the community's collective knowledge together, chat about it and learn/grow together. It's amazing. I will be a lifelong player of this game series because of all this. Also, as a side-note, this was my first of your videos that I've watched so far. The algorithm definitely hooked me up here. You've gained a subscriber, keep up the awesome work!

The inventory problem comes from the charms. In order to furter pump your character they introduced these charms with the expansion but they totally not related to the existing system. In the end game you mostly farmed items to cover the repair cost of your stuff (which was horrendous) the charms took away space so you no longer went home with interesting stuff you went home with every second item to sel lso you can cover the repair of your equipment. Its a long tiem whine to add a separate invetory for the charms and dotn let them have effect from the backpack jsut from there, this way you can get back your stash... but its never happened. Charms sadyl jsut that usefull you want to carry as much of them with you as just possible.

Have you played with a controller? Holy shit is it amazing.!Totally changes the spell selection /use mechanic. With just keyboard and mouse you have to select a spell and then and only then can you activate the spell by pressing the boud key for the spell. With a controller, you can bind spells to buttons and quickly use spells just by pressing the boud button. Fucking mind blowing.

the stamina thing is funny because i came in knowing defense is not active when you run. so i almost never ran and so i just threw away stam potions thinking them useless.

The company that developed Diablo 1 and 2 was Blizzard North, which was known as Condor before they were bought by Blizzard before the release of Diablo 1. I've heard that Blizzard told them to make Diablo 1 have real-time combat, so that's how the ARPG genre started, I guess. But Blizzard North went defunct in 2005, long before Diablo 3 was completed, and I'm not sure what percentage of the staff moved on to Blizzard proper. So Diablo 3 was released by another company, essentially.

Blizzard didn't do shit! Blizzard North made this game! Once D2 LOD was made the team was no more. Blizzard wanted WOW than this game. A different company Remade this game and they are known for upgrading or fixing older games. Vicarious Visions is the company that made it new again and everyone should be thanking them not Blizzard/Activition.

Part of the problem is also newer players aren't familiar with items and rune words. How these things can drastically change the game.

I still play D2, actually playing it right now lol. I'm working on my Holy grail. It amazes me that I'll have an item drop that I never actually seen drop before and I still haven't found everything in the game and I play it a lot. I hate that Blizzard changed Diablo with D3,and D4.

I *love* how the playable characters in D1 and D2 were ordinary adventurers who just wanted to make a difference. They weren't chosen ones. They weren't legends. They weren't all powerful nephalem. They just tried to do good or find glory. It hit hard when you find out what happened to the 3 adventurers in D1 while playing D2.
@MrSardoc111 ай бұрын
I'd have removed attribute points altogether and just auto-increase them on level up. The reason is everyone has the same build anyway (just enough str and dex to wear gear, the rest is vitality), so what difference does it make.
@WPFreeinternet9 ай бұрын
Well it's different from Diablo 1. Stats work differently or impacted your character differently. Magic in Diablo 1 allowed you to memorize higher tier spells or up your spells levels up along with increasing spell damage along with increasing MP. Energy only increases MP. In Diablo 1 strength had a bigger impact on your physical damage than in Diablo 2 due to the lower hit point ranges of monsters while in Diablo 2 either skills and more importantly gear will be the area in which you make gains with being more powerful. It isn't to say that finding choice items weren't important later on in Diablo 1, it's just that attribute points had a larger impact on your character.

Oh man. That segment talking about how you only interact with the act bosses via the cutscene and the actual fight was good stuff. Reminded me of azmodan in D3. The greatest general of hell, that tells you every few minutes what he's going to do next and won't shut the hell up. Man D3 did a bad job at story telling and the rpg elements. No stat points, not skill points. Bad story telling and some mediocre villains (in their execution, design was probably fine). Still hoping D4 is eventually fixed. The itemization is terrible in that game too. It's like the team didn't learn anything from D2. Damage to x, y, z, etc situational thing. Just boring boring stuff. Anyways. I should be going to bed, trying to actually be functional before work so I can do something before I have to head out. Stumbled on this and ended up watching the whole thing.

10:15 once you know whats valuable and whats not and your gear is decent, you rarely pick up much. Edit: Saw you liked. Id like to say great video though. Really encapsulates why I like D2R so much more than D3 or D4. My only gripe is that it feels like D2R is poorly optimized and can sometimes feel a bit stuttery even on a good PC.

What really good in Diablo2 and therefore the resurrected too is that you can see through what is happening in the battlefield. The new titles tend to give you high visual effect moves makign the game hard to see what is going on. You jsut lvl2 but you already rain down arrows, summon spirit army or throw meteors from the sky... D2 let you be started and give power not jsut flashy skills.
@todorsamardzhiev1442 ай бұрын
Having both on my PC, D2R Legacy graphics look and feel like a fanmade knockoff of classic Diablo 2 graphics. As for the proper D2R graphics, I think they look great at 4K, but quite underwhelming at 1080p or 1440p. I appreciate that devs are approaching the original with respect, while not being scared to change some broken and frustrating aspects of the game. Of course, it'd be even better if we had basic QoL improvements like rune stacking, loot filters, or charm inventory. Some mods been having these for 20 years.
@ScottyBGaming23911 ай бұрын
You're absolutely wrong. Diablo 2 CAN and IS that fucking good. It's one of the ONLY game if not the only game that's still actively played at this level that is as old as it is. WoW and RuneScape are the only other ones that hold a candle to Diablo 2. I've played off and on since the very release of diablo 2. D2 LOD was the absolute PINNACLE of gaming.
