Lief is an animal, without stage breakdowns it’s actually not that huge of a gap overall. There’s prob a couple of the sections Dale was cautious of with not knowing the trail and the conditions lost just a little lost momentum that paid off further down the trail.

I think a lot of people crashed on that chute during last year's race so they taped it off as a precaution. I can understand that it would be an intimidating line if you've never ridden the trail before, but last year's race was also in some heavy rain... 🤷
