Cardiac lesions in tortoises are incompletely described in the literature. This retrospective case series includes 11 cases of degenerative cardiac disease in young tortoises from two species in human care: Galápagos tortoise complex (Chelonoidis nigra complex) (n = 9) and sulcata tortoises (Centrochelys sulcata) (n = 2). Eight tortoises were male, two were female, and sex was undetermined for one individual. The age range at the time of death was 10-32 yr with a mean of 19 yr. The most common clinical signs noted prior to death were peripheral edema, lethargy, and inappetence. Common necropsy findings included generalized edema and pericardial effusion. All cases had ventricular myocardial fibrosis and several cases had epicardial adhesions. Additional common findings included hepatic lesions (hepatic lipidosis, hepatic fibrosis, and hepatitis) and pulmonary lesions (pulmonary edema, pulmonary fibrosis, and pneumocytic hypertrophy). A definitive cause for degenerative cardiac disease was not identified in this case series, but the young age distribution of the tortoises suggests that inappropriate environmental parameters, husbandry, and diet should be investigated as possible underlying contributing factors.

I remember watching the videos when she was first given to you. I watched her grow on camera. It's a real sad day to hear this and I am sorry you lost her. Congenital heart disease means they were born with it. She had the best life having freedom to run around. She was loved and treated very well.

Condolences to you Blake, I recently lost my eastern box turtle and as a grown man I cried. A lot of my friends say I’m too sensitive with animals but if you take something in to raise it and take care of it then you should love it like a member of your family. Gave him a proper burial and haven’t got one since cause it made me hella sad. It was wild and donated to a pet store with a foot injury and I got it all good and had it for a while then came home one day to him gone.. worst day ever.

Sorry about your loss man. We just lost one of our torts that has been around since my wife was a kid. They got her and didn't know her age and so we are unsure if it was from age or medical like Big G. We also have her in the freezer cause she's been a big part of my wife's life and our kids lives. I feel your pain and pray that God grants you and your family comfort in your time of loss right now. I know God will allow you guys to have another one soon as you have shown to be a great ambassador to his animals. Keep your head up bro, and don't let the haters knock you down. There was nothing you could have done to change the outcome.

As a Human with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, which is putting my heart through the same issue as Big G. I feel for your losing her. As a human I'm able to complain directly about all the little symptoms and there's medications and recently a surgery to keep me going, but our animal friends don't always have those options because the signs are subtle. I'm not even sure if the signs for heart failure is the same in Galapagos as it is in humans, but for me it's mostly a combination of fatigue and edema.
