Do you allow your car to warm up & if so what have you experienced?
@yunus_aros3 жыл бұрын
I’d seldom let it stand and idle. I use block heaters on our cars. Combined with a compartment fan I don’t need to scrape the windows either. The car is warm already. I’ve also got heated steering wheel and seats, even the backseat for the kids is heated. It’s not allowed to idle your car more than 60 seconds in my region.

@@yunus_aros ... If you use a block heater you should be fine. 👍
@yunus_aros3 жыл бұрын
@@TOOL_MARKS It’s better than idling it 10-15 minutes after cold start at least. On occasions I can’t use the block heater, I always drive about 30 seconds after I’ve started it. I never start the car during the time I am brushing the snow off and scraping the windows. I live in Sweden. We are used to winter cold starts here.

@@yunus_aros I would like to buy this engine heater for my Alfa Romeo 159 1.9 jtdm 16V. Can you recommend an online store where I can find a device compatible with my engine? Unfortunately, it is not popular in Poland.

I usually run it at idle like 2-5 mins. A bit longer when it's below freezing ( like -5 Celsius), a bit shorter when it's already warm outside/have driven it around not long ago. I have an older vehicle, so I give it time to be lubricated. I run fully synthetic or syntethic blend oils that flow well in cold too. In that time a time to open the gate, change the cars... check important messages- set the gps real quick, load some stuff in or out of the trunk, or clean off the frost from the windows with de-icer... or just a quick self-moment to get a bit relaxed and prepared to get going.

Its called " Operating Temp" . For over 50 years Ive always let my vehicles warm up . From Freightliners , to Acuras , to Harley Davidsons , your engine will last longer if all the metal parts have warmed up before you put a load on it . Believe what you want .

Thatswhy here in Finland we use electric heaters that heats the coolant so itsnot sobad for the engine when you starting it @ -20 celsius... But there is a catch. When youre engine is hot one tends to drive it normally. but if you start driving cold you will drive more gentle which will save youre tranny and drivelines... Also heats up to operating temp much faster when smoothly driving untill your driveline and tranny is also "hot" thus you dont get so much gasoline in to the oil... Most ppl here start the car and keep it idling for a minute or two while scraping ice off the windovs...

I agree. If airplane piston engines need warmed up than why wouldn’t a car.it’s not about oil flow, it’s the dissimilar metals and Clearances.

I see young guys in my neighborhood who will start their car on a cold winter morning, immediately put it in gear and then just mash the accelerator to the floor. It makes me cringe. It's almost like they are trying to break the engine. I always let my cars run for about one minute before I drive to give the oil time to circulate and then I drive gently until the engine really starts to warm up.

You may not need to warm up the engine very much, if at all, if you live in TX., or CA., for example... But for those of us in the Midwest, or Canada, I would DEFINITELY recommend warming up the engine. * Another thing worth mentioning here, that a few others have.... Is that warming up the engine will give time for the car cabin to warm up and DEFROST the windows. So you can say that this is a safety issue as well. As for myself... I notice that my engines idle and run more smoothly, if I allow them to warm up first, before driving... Especially in winter. Also, the engine and exhaust will be quieter.

What I do with my 2000 Toyota Camry LE is I let it warm up put the defrost on. Get out of the Camry and clean the windshield off then the other windows if I have too. I never turn on the engine and just drive off. No sir I let it warm up first in winter.

I've been taking more time up to 10 minutes on super cold days seems to help with the thinning of oil a lot Nate because my commute is less than 10 minutes. Also not as sluggish with a warm-up that first mile definately less stress on engine.

So far, the only reason I've heard for *not* warming up the engine is "the climate change narrative." Thus, I will continue to start it via my app.

Your information about the sensors is irrelevant. There's something called open loop and closed loop when you first crank your vehicle up it runs an open loop which means that it uses the amount of gasoline versus the amount of air that the computer is preprogrammed by the factory. Once it goes into closed loop that is when it uses the information on from the air fuel ratio sensors to determine the air fuel ratio. Now as far as the mass airflow yes but as long as the mass airflow is not covered in water and Frozen they're designed to work down to negative 100° effectively the same thing the map sensor etc but one thing you have to keep in mind when you're in a very cold environment the humidity is normally not high it is very rare to be in a location where the humidity is high do you need to warm your vehicle up it doesn't hurt but 99% of the population does not get in their vehicle throw it in drive and floor it most people drive to the end of their driveway drive out of their neighborhood etc where they're not hitting it hard now if you live on the interstate then that would be a different story but unless you live in West Texas you probably don't live on the interstate

The information on sensors is relevant to what I said verbatim, we have advanced and I named some sensors then I said allowing for optimum performance in almost any condition. But I appreciate you giving information that some may be unaware of. The point is more and more tech is added over time to improve all conditions. However before that I said Im sure you hear people talking about carburetors then I said and when referring to sensors but there a great deal that plays a important role in performance. Thanks for sharing your experience.

If airplane piston engines need warmed up then why don’t cars? I don’t buy not warming up your engine and transmission. The only argument that I even entertain against it is the excess fuel washes away the oil lubricants, but is that worse than putting it under load when cold. ?

Well for those who keep harping about engines these days are fuel injected and oils are so good etc etc - have you given any thought to the corrosive gases that form when gasoline combusts ? Acids are also produced and it’s these things that eat into your seals and rings. That’s not my opinion- it was an article by Car and Driver several years ago.

This is a myth. This was valid in the 1970’s and 1980’s when motors had carburetors. There are nowadays electronically monitored engines and they have controlled airflow/fuel ratio. I use my block heater for two reasons: save fuel and save on the engine. It wears less with the block heater. Starting a cold car does not wear less on the engine. Idling your car wears more on the cold engine than just driving it after about 30 seconds. It could even be harmful for your engine to be idling in the cold weather. I have personally never understood why remote start is so big in the USA. It’s bad for the car. It’s cheaper to install a block heater and a compartment heater in the car and plug it in via your 110V outlets. The car uses more gasoline whilst idling. That excess fuel could strip the engine walls of lubrication and wear on you piston rings, pistons and cylinder walls. I dare anyone to investigate how a car gets faster up to temp through idling excessively or by driving it for some odd miles? Old myths like these needs to be killed off. It is not a matter of opinion. It is a matter of fact.

Regardless of weather I wait 5 min before going anywhere. In the winter time, I wait until I’m at-least 3/4 of the way to operating temp. By the time I am down the street it’s at operating temp.

Let it run for a minute, literally, one minute and go. Also using a bottle of prolong treatment at every oil change is key. It's the best at coating the metal surfaces of your engine to stave off dry starts. Never, had any engine issues whatsoever. Use a guality oil and filter and prolong and 3000mile oil changes and sleep well at night. That's me anyway
