Soon as you said Indiana I knew. Silvia was the first case that got me into true crime. I saw the movie on Netflix and cried for days. I couldn’t understand or believe not one person would help her. She just needed one person to stand up for her.

Wow I can’t believe this case and that I never heard it before! Would you recommend the movie? I still find it hard to believe so many people were involved!

@@ZaraV it’s called an American crime. It was common to leave your kids with people that have kids and you know that saying “if your lost just find a mother with kids and wait with her until your found” shows that even women with kids cannot be trusted Sylvia deserved better and I know her sister was sick with polo and was scared I’m not trying to blame her for the actions of this evil woman but I don’t understand why she wouldn’t bring her sister water? Why couldn’t she tell an adult. I know she was young and didn’t want to get in trouble I just can’t imagine not helping my sister. This whole case tugs at the heart strings because I can’t imagine how a person can do this to a child. I watch true crime all day and don’t bar an eye but when it’s kids involved I can’t even imagine how evil people can be. You should do the Gabriel Fernandez case also to show how messed up family services are in America. They take away children from loving homes but ignore the children who needs them the most

Even when I got older I was still terrified I didn't think anyone would believe me. I was afraid if anyone found out I would be abused worse. So you don't have the power to fight back you feel helpless and terrified

The painful thing was that at this time, from what I understand..."physical punishment" was considered more acceptable than it is today. So unfortunately a lot of bystander excuses from neighbors that were made were mostly that they thought the kids were just being "disciplined". I don't know if I believe that they believed that...I moreso think that is what the adults were saying to themselves. I mean, thinking about also the teachers who saw Sylvia, the nieghbors, etc....I just think at that time, the see something say something really was not a thing. With regards to why Gertrude was doing this....I do think aside from the fact that she clearly did not have any empathy and seems to be a sociopath (I mean even her lawyer was blaming the children, as well as her on the stand), I do think a lot of what she was doing in abusing Sylvia was perhaps her self loathing towards herself. Her past, her being left by her husband, her violating and seducing that teenager to help her abuse Sylvia, her over and over calling her a prostitute and accusing her of being dirty, forcing her to "pleasure" herself in front of the neighborhood boys with coke bottles and the "who's going to marry you now"....I definitely think a lot of this was her bitterness over her circumstances and general hate towards herself and the women her husband was unfaithful with and using Sylvia as a way to scapegoat her own self loathing and insecurities. That and her feelings towards her daughter Paula for getting pregnant. I know it's hard to fathom seeing your sibling being abused so viciously as well. I also though, think you are right, like the fact that Jenny is a smaller and disabled child who has no adults to turn to and is terrified for her life....seeing her sister slowly get tortured and killed....she must have also been starving and malnourished....and being forced to hurt her own sister...I am sure she wasn't at that point in her right mind. The cult like mentality Gertrude was forcing her children to get into as well as all the neighborhood child following suit, I am sure once her sister died and she saw policemen, she finally got shaken out of her stupor and realized she could finally get help and tell the truth. I have survived family abuse (not of this calliber, but regardless), and I know and understand how difficult it is to remember reality. You get warped into the reality you are forced to be in. When everyone is against you and you get told over and over and over again it's your fault at such a young age and you are wrong....trust me in that your sense of self and self esteem diminishes. Your fight gets taken away. And you lose yourself. You start to believe it. Adding to not getting the nourishment you need, the emotional support by any adult figure around you, all the adults are conveniently ignoring what's happening (remember, the neighbors could hear Sylvia getting abused and tortured. They could hear her screams and hitting the walls for help), all the children are abusing as well, your parents don't make you feel safe, it's just.....I don't think these poor girls stood a chance from the beginning. I would just be mindful to note that given the time period of this story, given the fact that every single person around you is harming you, and you are STILL trying to keep your sister safe from being harmed like you are....and on the other side Jenny seeing the same and not knowing what to do because she already tried to get help from her older sister and she couldn't get it, she has no one to turn to, she isn't a fully physically healthy child, and her parent is nowhere in sight......I just would try and note that this is all not something we can understand in a logical sense. I feel so sad for Sylvia but I also feel sad for her sister. They both were let down so viciously by everyone. R.I.P sweet girl and we will not forget you

Thanks for your informative comment. Great points and perspective. Sorry that you suffered abuse however the extent. Yeah Silvia Lykens endured things no one should ever have to. You’re right about telling these stories though. There’s lessons here that must not be forgotten, from the “see something, say something” to make sure that we are aware of the darkness that lies in potential within all of us and how it can come out in the right situation. It might be gruesome but Silvia must not be forgotten and neither must our disgust and disdain for Gertrude and her vile cohorts

Ugh isn’t it terrifying though! Just looking at Gertrude’s pics I can imagine - but it will never ever come close to what Sylvia actually had to ENDURE! At that age too! She was a really strong girl and I feel would have had an impact on the community if she had the chance to live out her life

It’s so upsetting that Silvia was so innocent. My uncle Robin shared a bed with family friend Mandy to prevent her Dad from touching her. Her mum didn’t want to hear it and the only way my grandma would put the carving knife down when she found out was my uncle saying “don’t worry mum I’ll look after her”. He had a permanent sleepover bag by the front door and every night he would wait for a phone call from Mandy to let him know if she was sleeping at home that night or if she was going to be on a sleepover so she would be safe. He literally didn’t know who’s bed he was sleeping in every night. But anyone that heard that Mandy was sharing a bed with Robin judged her and my family so super hard behind their backs. Girls and boys can be friends without having sex, I can’t believe that’s still something we struggle with today.

I'm just now to the end 😅 The body stiffens bc there is no more blood flow. And so the blood comes to a standstill, which also cause the bruising look on the skin. The higher the temps, the quicker it will set in. It was July when what happened in my life happened. And even though he had only been dead like 3 hours, he had locked himself in the garage It's super hot and humid in july in Oklahoma. That made his rigor set in quick, it started at the feet and was up to the hip Crest within a few hours. Just due to temps Amazing job on the case! I would have cried so much while filming this

(An American Crime is a really well done movie) Children are so vulnerable. It seems like logic to say "I wouldn't..." or "I would..." in the same situation. Adults, especially those who are supposed to be caretakers have SO much POWER over them. And look at it from a child's POV. They have no power over their lives, someone else is always in complete control over your life. And children are always blamed for conflict between themselves and adults. To them, it seems completely real that they will be the ones in trouble, the ones shamed, the ones blamed. Unfortunately, too often, it's true to at least some extent. It seems like the children are evil, but they were also manipulated and brain washed. Think of child soldiers, who were once sweet innocent little kids, but become capable of horrific acts of terror. They aren't evil. They do what they've been forced to do. They do what they think they have to do. They are, themselves, victims of the adults who brainwashed them. Most of them suffer for the rest of their lives as the gravity and reality of what they've done sets in. With each new stage of development, they have to come to understand it all over again. Manipulating children like this... brainwashing them, turning them into monsters is so so evil. Perhaps even more evil than what she did to Sylvia.

rigor mortis is the process your body goes through after you die. It starts about 2 hours after your heart stops. As your heart is no longer pumping blood around your body, your joints and body start to stiffen and feel cold. Oxygen is no longer able to be circulated. Rigor mortis is the third stage of death, the paleness being stage 1: Pallor Mortis and the coldness being stage 2: Algor Mortis. Then is Liver mortis which is when the physiological changes happen such as releasing contents from stomach and the blood changes from red to a bluish-purplish colour due to no oxygen. All together it lasts about 2-8 hours. Cornoners can tell how long they've been gone based on the specific stage the person is in. She would have been in the last stages of liver moris when they found her hence the ability to know how long ago she died. Then is decompisition which happens about a day post mortem where the body begins to start bleating and decaying

*PARENTS!* THIS IS WHY ITS SOOOOOO IMPORTANT TO HAVE A CODE WORD BETWEEN YOUR KIDS AND YOU! I'll give a good example that is very inconspicuous...when I talk to my kids over the phone, I'll say , "I love you" and if they say "love you love you" back to me, I know they need to talk to me in private and I will do everything possible to either get them alone or go pick them up. (My best friend used to be a bad alcoholic so if they were with their "auntie " and they said that, I'd know that she was drinking heavily and would go pick them up. Or when my kids were staying with their grandma who had a mean husband and would fight a lot, and they said "love you, love you" that meant they were fighting and I'd immediately go get them!. ) if I'm trying to ask them if they need me, id ask..."do you love me? As we "true crime junkies" have seen CPS/DCFS etc don't do such a great job at times. Reporting abuse that isn't investigated or isn't taken seriously could create more abuse of the child. I feel like it could also make the parents realize they better be a bit more discreet when it comes to "disciplining" their kids. I just thank GOD I don't work with kids. If I were a teacher or someone who interacted with kids and thought there was abuse... I'd probably be in jail.

I'm sure Sylvia knew that if she fought back or told about the abuse that her sister would also be hurt. THAT would keep her silent. Imo. I don't understand how so many children were involved and yet no neighbors or teachers found out or stepped up to help Sylvia.

Theres a few movies about this case one is the girl next door the names are changed, the girls are orphaned and they live with their aunt based in the 50s but the movie an American Crime with Eliot Page is dead on, the parents are carnival workers and the names aren't changed its a terrible thing that happened

They made a movie about this. I think it’s called American dream

They made a lifetime movie about her. It's sickening.

I hate everyone that failed this girl I don't care how old you are growing up you know hurting people is wrong you can grasp that concept and that scares me people like that cannot be trusted the fact that Gertrude had these "kids" pay her to torture Silvia is disgusting THEY PAID THIS AWFUL WOMAN SOME POCKET CHANGE TO BEAT AND TORTURE HER

You look so beautiful in bright purples and pinks, I’m a character creator (so this is how I see people haha) and if I were to draw you I would create a rainforest nymph, dewy vibrant and beautiful 🖤
@christyjenkins84296 ай бұрын
I am like you being her sister I would have fought for her to take some of the beatings to help her or when at school I would have alerted someone to help us to hopefully get us out of that house. This is just heartbreaking and so sad because most children are loving and gentle and I am so surprised that none of those children felt guilt and sad about what they had done and told someone. just terrible

There was another movie made called girl next door that is also based on this case and it's just as horrific

There’s a book “inspired” by this case and idk how to feel about it. It’s basically the case with different names and I feel like the author is just profiting off the tragedy in the name of “extreme horror” (the girl next door by Jack Ketchum)

I will try and watch this but I know all about this horrendous story. Gertrude just looks evil its shining out her i wouldnt leave my goldfish with her let alone my child! I will never understand people who have black hearts and take it out on people who can't or won't fight back. It's so sad.

The reason why Sylvia went through so much is because it was transfer. Grrrr oud did not want her own daughter pregnant, because she viewed her life as being ruined by having children.

This is so disturbing ... seems to me like everyone involved is one of those people who you absolutely know would have been Nazis ... just letting one person direct the destruction of an innocent due to hatred and envy by people who are blindly doing what they are told because someone with the appearance of authority told them to ... absolutely disgusting and I hope that all of them scream themselves awake at night because she's all they can dream about .... sadly , I don't believe that is the case because they are just those type of people ... even though your words fill me with empathy for Sylvia , your makeup is giving me a pastel Mad Men vibe that I am absolutely here for ... beautiful look and amazing story telling ...

Wonder to yourself how well you'd do half starved, dehydrated, overtired, exhausted mentally and physically... Told your no good for so long you half believe it and abused by everyone in your household to the point of ruin. How would would you leave? You can no longer see the wood through the trees. Thoughts become about basic needs and survival possibly not even venturing to think of freedom. This is so sad. This is how to destroy someone in entirety. Poor sylvia

Clearly some of us haven’t been in abusive situations because some ppl are making comments about how they don’t understand why someone didn’t tell , well if you had been in an abusive situation you would know that telling is just as scary as not what happens if nobody believes you and tells the abuser you told well now you’re in for a real beating , and hat if you tell and the abuser doesn’t get in trouble we’ll again you’re in for some trouble, how about let’s not assume we know what happens in the mind of the abused and like we know what we would do it disgusting to say oh why didn’t they do this or that .
@Debbie-st4nn Жыл бұрын
It's not disgusting that people are saying that. They are saying it because they don't understand which in all honesty is a good thing because it means they haven't suffered and that's great.
