So my now adult son saved a classmate when he was in high school. So while at a party she drank a bit too much. And a couple of guys were trying to do S.A. on her He luckily was right there and stopped it to this day ( 6 years later) are the best of friends. She is constantly thanking me for raising such an amazing human. I truly believe he not only saved her je also stopped them from being arrested and going to court all those things

I was 4 yrs old, when I first lost my innocence. Not that I remember ever being innocent, or what it’s like to just be a child. For years I was manipulated & trained with violence, pain, fear, & even gentleness, to be nothing more than a toy. At age 13, I was assaulted again (in front of my best friend) but this time I was going to be brave & strong. Hoping I could stop it from happening to someone else, we filed a police report. I had to relive the details to a detective, a grand jury and then again at trial. His attorney tried to insinuate that my long, oversized tweety bird gown may have been too revealing. That 40+ yr old man with a prior r@pe conviction, got 11/29@30% & did less than 3 months. I ended up with drug abuse issues, Multiple suicide attempts, and counseling. I’m stronger for it but I still have a lot of issues to work through.

@toddlequeen6791, Hi, if just only reading your message hurt my heart and made me feel for you, i can't even imagine what awful things you have endured and seen in your life. You didn't deserve any of it. Im so sorry. A lot of people in this world are so cruel and inhumane. I really wish the best for you and hope you find your happiness and hold on to your strength. Turn that passion into a positive and be the best person you can be. You deserve to be loved and happy and don't let anything or anyone stand in your way. Sadly, we can't change our past or the people that we were put with, but we can change our future. Remember, when you will in life, only then will those evil people lose.

So happy to see you cover this case!! I live about 3 hours away from Steubenville, when this all came out I fresh out of high school, about a week away from starting my freshman year of college. I was genuinely so scared for so long. Obviously starting out in college, I wanted to have fun, to go to parties, let loose, drink a bit, etc. But instead, I spent my weekends and nights out ALWAYS concerned about my safety and consistently watching out for others and what they might do when I wasn't looking. Guys like this are the absolute reason for the fear that women carry with them throughout life. I'm beyond thankful that I've never been fully taken advantage of in a situation like this (though I have been in a lesser manner) but I do have several friends who have, sadly, suffered in this same way and the emotional damage it causes is absolutely detrimental. I appreciate you bringing light to these situations and types of violence. I know it isn't easy to research, much less talk about publicly, but it is SO important for people to understand what this state lets men get away with. Because "boys will be boys" right? WRONG. "Boys" are boys, THESE kinds of "boys" are MONSTERS and EVIL. They are r**ists, they are predators, and in my opinion, they should be locked up UNDER the jail. But instead, they get a soft little slap on the wrist, and then get to go on to college and into a whole new pool of potential victims. It's disgusting, it's sad, and it's cruel, but it's something women (all women, but especially in Ohio with how rampant it seems to be) need to be aware of and be prepared for to be able to protect themselves if they were to have one of these baby b*tch boys try to attack them!

People don't want to believe. When I was about 25 I was drugged.. I had been partying and drinking since I was like 16.. I knew what being drunk felt like and I couldn't handle my liquor.. I could drink multiple shots and multiple beers and be alright. This night, I had two ciders and one tequila shot, and I ended up unconscious on the bathroom floor in the bar. The bouncer had to carry me outside into an Uber my friend then carried me inside his house. When I woke up the next day, no one wanted to believe me when I said I was drugged. They all said I was just over reacting and I just had too much to drink. Thankfully, I had friends that took care of me and didn't leave me alone... or else the group of guys who drugged me would have been able to take me wherever and do whatever. Instead, my friends got me home safe. But yeah I just remember how horrible it felt that most wouldn't believe me and instead blamed me for drinking too much.. when I only had had two fricken cider drinks and one shot over like 3 hours. I would've been technically sober enough to drive at that rate not be unconscious face first on a dirty club floor.

In Louisiana, when i was a teen, the drinking age was 18 and changed to 21 two months before i turned 18. The small town i was from had a lawsuit trying to keep the drinking age 18, so for a couple of years some bars and stores still sold to 18-20 years because "if you are old enough to vote or join the military, you are old enough to drink. At 14-18 i used a fake id or bought from someone who was willing to sell to minors. There was always someones parents out of town or had a hunting camp that was having a party. I no longer live in that little town but have friends that allow their 13- 17 years old to drink saying that we did it so it's fine. These small towns have absolutely nothing for teenagers to do and treat football players like legends.

New subscriber here and thank you SO much for covering this case. I followed it very closely as I went through almost the exact same thing. My senior year of high school I went to a guys house to hook up, but ended up getting pressured to drink alcohol while I was there. After his friends left, what I didn't know is that someone stayed in the closet to record our entire encounter. This video was then sent to others in my high school where I was put to blame for everyone involved getting suspended. The police never did anything for me because I was "almost 18". This just shows the type of world we are STILL living in and it makes me sick.

And, additionally, my husband and I were a set of those parents whose home was always the gathering place for our kids' friends. We were laid back, counted heads at mealtimes and just threw a little more in there in order to have enough. We did crazy stuff like with em ALL the time...not just holidays. Like teaching them how to do a Jacob's Ladder, bobbing for apples, making candy/caramel apples (ya show em, then back away and watch em), popcorn balls, pulling REAL taffy, real bon fires and roasting weiners/marshmallows/smores/baked potatoes/corn wrapped in foil at the edge of the coals...fun stuff. And, to see their eyes light up and watch life through their innocent eyes was worth EVERYTHING to us both!! When our kids became older, we knew they would party and probably drink. We asked them to never drink and drive or stay in a situation that is uncomfortable. Call. We will come. No questions asked. Safety is PARAMOUNT!! When one of them was having a significant event in their lives...graduation, 18th Birthday, whatever. We would offer our home as a safe haven for said party. One of our buildings outside was clean, had tables, AC/heat, etc and a wide door that wood open to the yard/patio. We had a BBQ grill, a huge fire pit and a HUGE blue tooth speaker. Our patio area was a 5 car area and wrapped to the house and street. We had tiki lamps to keep away the skeeters if needed. We had GREAT neighbors whom i always forewarned and invited. As each person arrived, my son or grandson would direct parking and they had to come into the house. They were escorted to make sure this happened. They gave me their name, #, parents name, #, their keys and I explained I would be calling said parent and explaining where they were, they wouldn't be allowed to drive if at all impaired, I have their keys and breathalyzer tests. They always agreed. I would label each set of keys w/name, #, car type/color and hang em on a board my husband had made just for this purpose. At the top, he painted, "Party Key Board". Lol! We stayed up and supervised. Never had one problem. The kids that stayed, I gave their parents a courtesy call if they wanted one...some said it was okay after the 1st conversation. We would often have kids on every available surface which included 4 air mattresses. Next day there would be Hot Pockets, scrambled eggs, bacon and biscuits...their choice when they started waking. They were safe, had celebrated their important milestone with beer pong games, chasers, jello shots, pizza, roasted weiners and marshmallows, but no drugs and never any assaults. Just a lot of fun for them whether we understood it or not. They all returned home the next day with strict instructions to go straight home and have their Mom/Dad call me and let me know they had made it. Never failed. Each always complied. When you give kids a little room, but expect accountability and you're there for counsel or support or whatever, it actually makes them feel safer...better. It gives them structure. Stability. Kids want and NEED that.

Most of the time in small town America there are usually a few people over 21 who still hang out with high schoolers (they can't get over their high school days 😅) so they usually get the alcohol. From my experience in a very small football town, the parents knew about the parties and were okay with it and a lot of the time the parents provided the alcohol for us. The parents liked to party after big games too! When I would throw parties my mom usually knew and my uncle owned a liquor store so he'd sell me alcohol in my teenage years. Now that I'm in my 30s with kids I couldn't imagine letting this happen.

From a former U.S. high schooler party goer( 2008-2012) This is very accurate , I believe the sneaky part of it and because its not legal to drink until 21 here. Most kids are burnt out from high school and college by the time they are 21 lol. Older kids usually buy the alcohol, and there is a lot of binge drinking so you don’t drink to get tipsy you get drunk to get super super drunk. ( I hope this helps) now I was a teenager when this happened so it makes sense, but I will say I have a 17 year old sister and this culture has seemed to change, kids are a lot more aware now and yes they drink but because of social media they know it can come back to haunt them so they are more careful.

I guess it all depends on where your located and what school you go to depends on if the students waiver towards drugs and alcohol more v.s. studies Now a days at 24 I don't drink at all unless I know a drink would match a meal

In America, it’s most common for teens to throw parties when parents are out of town or gone for the night because even if the parents are okay with drinking, if cops come the parents can be arrested so most of them are super against allowing it (depending on which state of course too) I was very guilty of it all through highschool. We always knew someone older who had a fake ID and would get us alcohol. My parents only knew about the times the cops came.

I live in Texas and have a daughter and as she was growing up I would have house parties but only if I was present so that I could make sure noone drove home that couldn't or that if someone was drinking too much I could jump in and help them clean up and get them to sleep it off. We do live in a small town where everyone knows everyone and some of my daughters friends would have or allow house parties where the parents were not present and my daughter would get so upset with me because i wouldn't allow her to go but for her safety if I couldn't be there then she couldn't go. Her being my only child I worried about her so much and not to mention the person who had the house party with no parents ended up going to jail because the party got too out of hand and the father was arrested for contributing to minors and served his time which opened a ton of eyes here in our town about parties for our children. This is just what we experienced in our small town, my daughter is now 36 years old has children of her own.

I am a brand new subbie to you. You just popped up on my recommended today! I think you're absolutely amazing! So I subbed immediately. I wanted to comment on the whole Trent's best friend thing. But first, I'd just want to preface by saying, that I do not condone anything that happened to Jane at all. I believe her 1000%. & I do think there are times where you can be drunk & remember things, & at times, drink way to much & not remember a single thing at all. It is sad, that we live in a world that we can not trust people in our circles that we hang around. Not saying that it is their job to babysit, but people should be more open & upfront about things when they see that something bad is happening. You CAN speak up. If you see something, say something. I am a HUGE advocate of that. With that being said, it almost seemed as though Trent's friend was going to do the right thing. I was right there with you on that Zara. But when you said he started showing others the picture, & you said he had deleted it by morning. I said, Aww shit, I bet you someone he showed it to, probably talked him out of it. Told him to delete it. & said something about having loyalty to Trent. Blah, blah, blah. Which really sucks, because that would've really helped assist imo, not only with giving Jane's case credibility, but also her friends would have seen the fact that his own best friend is trying to tell him to stop doing this horrendous thing. You know what I mean? And it could have turned out wayyy different for her having more support. Period. Anyways, I hope Jane is ok today. My heart goes out to her. I've been through something similar. Not anywhere near as public as in social media, bless her heart. But with having alchohol possibly being drugged involved & not being able to consent, coming from a small town where everyone knows & all of that. There's alot more to it. But I get it, I do. SA is no joke. I hope she has been able to heal! #IfYouSeeSomethingSaySomething

This is why you need to go out with real friends, people you trust. Of course none of what happened to this girl is her fault, when I was 18 I was raped while being drunk, I wasn’t with my usual group of friends and no one even noticed. It took me years to talk about it… But it taught me to never trust people I don’t know enough. That’s why I decided to go to law school. The guy who did this to me never got any punishment, but I hope I can help other victims in these kind of cases, when usually people don’t believe them, they blame them for being drunk and you feel so ashamed and dirty. That’s why you run to the shower and wash your clothes, you don’t even think about possible evidence you don’t want to admit what happened to you. This make me so mad, because it happens all the time.

These young men should've been charged and sentenced as rapists. Football beside. The coach and all of the onlookers should've been charged with that law that provides protection from society from their future behavior...something about being on the sidelines and doing nothing, cheering it on, sharing and laughing about the commission of this felony. Jody Foster starred in a true life movie (can't recall the name of the movie) representing a woman who was gang raped in a 47:55 bar on a pin ball machine and pool table. The rapists were found not guilty largely bc of her reputation. She was a loose party loving girl!! However, her attorney was DETERMINED and came up with the idea to charge the rapists and the onlookers in the bar with a law that is a felony when you watch or cheer a felonious act and do nothing. ALL of them, including each rapists were found guilty of these felony charges.

I have 4 daughters, statistically at least one of them is bound to be raped (strictly going on statistics, lifestyle choices can increase and decrease that rate, but that's the risk that stands currently). It's my absolute fear, because whether or not they survive the rape, they have to live with that feeling and the social stigma forever. Their rapist could be anyone, the threat could be completely unexpected. I raise my girls to be aware of the risks, the no no zone, keywords and phrases and behaviors, how to fight it off, all the advice I can give as a mother and child victim of SA. I'm currently pregnant with my first son, I'm excited, I know he will be a gentleman with all the female influences that'll be there to guide him as well as a strong, respectful and dependable father to teach him how to be a good man. Teaching how to treat women right isn't raising a wuss, it's raising a respectable member of society. When men are respectful, women and girls tend to be as well.

If someone is passed out how on earth can they say she gave consent? Sorry but whichever way you dress it up, rape is rape!! I can't believe them boys only served 2 years n under for their part in the abuse n rape of this poor young girl, so so sad. Zara, I like the comment that you gave about rape n murder both ends life, I've never really thought of it like that but you are so right, it really does! No-one ever gets 'over' a rape or sexual abuse they just learn to cope/live with it as time goes on. Thank you Zara for telling these stories the way you do, with compassion to the victims as it should be.

Now being an adult and having a teenage daughter I can’t believe how many house parties I attended at her age but I trusted the people around me because we all knew each other since we were literally in preschool and elementary school we definitely looked out for each other it was only when we allowed others in our circle that some messed up things would go down but I’d be damn if I let my daughter go to a house party unless I know who what when and where 😂

I live in Connecticut, sandwiched between New York & Massachusetts. I started dating one of my now ex-bfs when we were 20, so not too long after high school. We both attended the same one. I never drank or partied like that until after high school, but he did & told me some of the craziest stories. He said that he hooked up with a girl on one couch while another guy hooked up with another girl on a different couch in the same room. Moving forward to a few years ago when I was 28 or 29. Four of my coworkers rented a house together & would hold parties pretty often. I attended my fair share but never witnessed anything too wild. However, I heard stories about different couples hooking up only a few feet away from each other multiple times. None of these people were swingers & the couples didn't interact with each other at all beyond being in the same room. I didn't know this was a thing either, but apparently this is pretty common over here in the US of A. (No judgment to consenting adults doing their thing! Most people from the stories I mentioned were shitty, immoral humans who would ply girls with alcohol way past the point of consent. So, my tone might seem judgy because I do judge them.)

I am a local. I actually attended Big Red high School a long time ago. I'll tell you first thing, the football players are royalty in this town. This poor girl when people here talk about it, she's the problem in everyone's eyes. I wish I was kidding. I know people who knew those involved, they still (when it's actually talked about) blame her. To have the audacity to punish the football royalty. I'm embarrassed to be from this area.

How these kids get so much alcohol is usually things like older siblings, raiding parents liquor stashes, and sometimes from older boyfriends or friends

Zara this is awful. Their sentences were only a slap on the hand. They should have gotten more time. What example does that set for those who do the same? May they all be haunted. Most of that town is just evil. Because of damn football. Healing prayers to Jane and her family.

8:03 Some alchohol stores that buy damaged stock (missing or dented beer cans from cases) to sell to minors as long as you just say you're over 21 in the U.S. even if its illegal. They mark up the price super high cause they know that teenagers will buy it anyway. There's one I know of in my city that pays off police to not report them

It’s absolutely disgusting listening to this. What the hell kind of kids is this town raising?? I don’t give a shit if they are the President of the United States the appropriate punishment for the horrific crime that was committed by multiple people, and then again with a large part of the community needed to be taken!!! I am a parent of a 21 year old daughter and 3 boys (16,18,19) I can’t even imagine standing on either side of this violation of a human being. How devastating for this young lady along with her family. This is the kind of stuff that makes people take some action in their own hands. I’m not so sure I could blame them! * by the way, the Netflix documentary is on KZbin.

I mean the place almost sounds like it's pronounce "Stupidville" so I guess that checks out. Like stop blaming the victims and take responsibility of the boys' shitty behaviour. I mean the chat conversation those boy's had and then also deleting evidence the next morning, like they knew they were in the wrong.

You have to wonder how boys that age are already so jaded and desensitized to cruel sex and rape that they would do this to a passed out drunk classmate out in the open at a party. Well...look at what is available for viewing for porn on the internet. They learn to have zero respect for women watching that crap. Add alcohol and and a sense of athlete entitlement and well...this is the awful result.

I can provide some insight into the question about how these parties happen-- Someone's parents are out of town, Someone has a friend/sibling/cousin/whatever who is over 21 (the legal age in the US) who will buy the alcohol. Party, Party, Party...The next day the close friends come over & help clean up. Not proud of it, but we did this dozens of times when I was a teenager.

It sounds like Jane Doe was drugged. She was probably slipped a "ruffy". This drug can make a person very sick. Unfortunately, there are young men in high school or college sports programs that think they are above the law and can get away with it. I feel just sick about what to this young woman. I'm thinking the girls that turned against Jane Doe because they 1. they were scared it might happen to them in the future or 2. they wanted to stay in with the popular group. 😢 There is a movie called Roll Red Roll.

At US🇺🇸 high-school parties, they usually get it from older friends or use their fake ID’s. It’s rare to ask their parents, but sometimes they do.

I feel like people don't take rape or sexual assault seriously unless it is a violent assault or by a complete stranger. People you know can be predators, being drunk is a mistake, sexually assaulting someone while they're drunk and unable to consent is not a mistake. It is a disgusting assault and using a human as an object never mind humiliating them as in this case.

when i was in hs (like 17 yo) i was at a party w my 2 friends. one friend was trying to go to sleep w my other friend in the bed that the homeowners son let us have for the night, but some guy snuck in and tried assaulting my friend. she ran downstairs crying, i asked what was wrong and she told me and said that our other friend was left alone up there w him. i ran upstairs by myself, not even stopping to grab our guy friends (i told her while i was running up the stairs to grab them right then bc i didnt have time to waste) and burst into the room. all lights were off. i began screaming at the top of my lungs for him to wake up and get out of bed and he faked being asleep. i began pulling his hair out. he called me a bitch and told everyone i was kicking him out of his room. everyone there knew me and knew i wouldnt do it for no reason, and the hallway flooded w ppl kicking him out. turns out his hand was down my friends pants and had undone them, and she didnt know what else he wouldve done if i didnt come in ripping his hair our and screaming bloody murder

USA here haha. About parties: normally it’s while parents are gone. They usually do get caught just don’t care. They clean up when everyone leaves or their friends help. Usually alcohol comes from older “friends” that still hangout around teenagers. I’ve even been to week long parties. I just thought house parties were normal everywhere not just a US thing 😅

Obviously why would they thing it’s okay if we was sober and not drinking would I ever touch y’all or let you no ! Sports are serious here in the US. My Husband and some of our friends go to Friday Night High School Football games. We are empty nesters but, we have some young men from here that have went on to play in the NFL. To be honest, I feel like Saturday college football games are just as attended and watched as NFL. The NBA and College basketball games are intense too. This story is so awful! If she was ‘naked, unmoving and silent’ somebody should have helped her!!! This makes me furious! 🤬 The kid that took the photo to show her the next day may have had second thoughts because of snitch mentality. The parents of all of the juvenile delinquents that were there and knew what was going on but did nothing to stop it must be so proud. 🤦🏼♀️ Edit: If the Jane Doe ever reads this, this was NOT your fault!

Ugghhhh!!! I hate to admit it but I grew up not far from there. While their football team is far from great, even in their area, the small town locals will instinctively try to protect the football players. It's the Ohio football/small town culture. I remember so many people being outraged by this but nothing seemed to happen. The outcome of these horrible events will continue to happen until we start holding perpetrators accountable.

Drunk girls passed out in the toilet floor in the bar I work as security are able to give me their passcode for the phone or even open it for me but they are not in any state of giving the consent. It's automatic response. But they are too drunk to give consent. We always call parents to pick them up (even though they all 23yo or more) we call someone to pick them up because we can't just leave them out on the street like this.
