Why didn't you reach out to an Mercedes AMG shop? I mean asking isn't shameful? Tell them what you have done already and ask what the problem could be. And maybe im stupid, but who says that bank 2 isn't the other side? This engine isn't much different then a left hand drive engine, who knows maybe its something very silly. I hope you work it out brother.

Great work bro. Firstly Check the camshaft adjuster solenoid and the camshaft sensor cause you much find that you have a faulty solenoid which is stuck open and already activates the camshaft adjuster taking the the camshaft out of timing. Also check cam adjuster bolt because it has a valve inside which might be stuck open. Always start with the basics.
@Ka0s007 Жыл бұрын
You need a scan tool that can show the signals coming from the timing control circuit - You have proven correct static timing, it sounds like the cam adjustments that happen when running are causing this code. I doubt its sensors as you got the code erased on the ramp. More likely slack chain (from skimming the head) allowing it to jump a tooth (would show same for a stretched chain) - Vanos or whatever its called on Merc is faulty. Dont give up - But also remember you have made a change from standard by skimming the head.
@ThatDIYguy862 Жыл бұрын
Manufacturers allow for a bit of skimming on the head. There’s a certain limit it’s allowed up to. Also, the timing chain tensioner will make up for the skimmed head, both the heads were skimmed but only one side is having the issue with the code
@joeking9149 Жыл бұрын
Hi Namz. I just love what your doing. I have a theory that you might want to explore, concercerning your timing dilemma with this current vehicle. And it concerns the Harmonic ballancer. These are known to fail. By fail I mean the outer ring can slip around the inner ring giving the illusion that your engine is timed up but could be one or two degrees out of phase. Admittedly this usually happens on rare accassions and with high mileage vehicles. Just for reference the Harmonic ballancer is your bottom pulley with the timing marks on it. Worth a look.
@masturcheef105 Жыл бұрын
It's possible there's no problem at all. After cam adjusters I spent a ton of time making sure the timing was perfect on my m156, even writing each step down so I could be 100% sure. The code that popped up anyway went away in the time I was waiting to get it cleared. If the rest of the assembly's tight I'd hand crank it until you're comfortable, double check the sensor, and send it. If it's not audibly running wrong and the components all check out I wouldn't give it too much head space. Just my experience, good luck!

@michaelchristou5127 Жыл бұрын
You’ve done so well buddy! In another video on a merc, i saw that the pully was slipping on itself… so although you think the timing is right it may be wrong. That is why there is a change in the position of the cams when you have set them correctly. It’s just a thought… wishing you all the best to get it sorted!

Sounds silly but I had this on a transit (I no totally different engine and ball game) but changed a fuel pump which is timed and kept giving codes to do with the timing. Had 3 experienced mechanics look at it and no1 could work it out as timing tool fitted every time. Well turned out it was the tensioner that had a little bit of wear on it enough to throw the timing out. Changed that and boom the truck run sweet didn’t miss a beat. People are saying it I no but it’s got to be head skimmed related because it’s the only thing you have done differently to the original spec of the car.
@MkOO4 Жыл бұрын
Hey Namz great content you got. My thoughts concerning the timing are, probably the timing chain is a bit longer after skimming therefore causing it to skip a tooth on the timing because of the reduced distance.
@thetoreador1382 Жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking, the firm who skimmed the heads said they had remove a lot and advised a thicker head gasket. Namz said there wasn’t one available and went with the standard one and said he was taking a chance. It’s gonna need another head I reckon

@Triple_7_garage Жыл бұрын
@namzboost you got the cylinder head skimmed and you didn’t compensate for that when you put the motor back together when you skim the head, you took metal off which put some more slack in the chain which the tensioner can not compensate for especially on timing chain engines .what you would you have to do is get an MLS gasket take it apart and use the pieces of metal sheets from the gasket as spacers to make up the metal lost from getting the head skimmed .you should’ve been better off buying Brand new cylinder heads even though they are so much more expensive but would have saved you time. But your machine shop should have probably informed you on how much metal they took off the cylinder heads and checked run out and checked out the metal they took off the heads were at the max amount of run out of metal they could take out the cylinder head before it was considered as garbage. They should’ve told you to put sheets in MLS gasket and spacers to make up for the amount of metal missing from the cylinder head to compensate for the timing chain slack so it wouldn’t go out of timing.
@likhwadube5937 Жыл бұрын
Skimming removes hundreds or thousands of an inch, very tiny amount not enough to cause timing problems. After skimming you use the correct sized gasket according to what was taken off. Heads were checked for trueness before skimming, so no need for new heads.
@loudshirtdude Жыл бұрын
Great content love it, just another suggestion, an anti-drain-back valve keeps oil in the passages that lead to the hydraulic tensioner, blocking the return of the oil through the filter to the oil pan. If there is no oil in the passage, it means it takes longer for the oil pump to pressurize the tensioner, is the oil filter ok and oil right spec? otherwise keep at fella looking forward to conclusion!

Hi Namz excellent determination, i know such things can be frustrating but, Why dont you clear the error codes and resetting the adaptations before starting the car, or atleast do an oil priming before starting the car since you pointed out to lack of oil in the tensioner can throw out timing? Because the moment the car starts the ECU will pick up from the last adaptation values thereby throwing the timing off yet again. I am saying this because u turned the engine by hand and it didnt throw of the timing, but when the ECU is engaged after starting the car the timing goes off This is just my point of view and i think it worth trying

Mercedes, a multibillion dollar company engineered engine that is having issues from a small firm with no prior experience using Mercedes official equipment. This shows only user error, you will get it right eventually with time and money. Mercedes only declined the car because it is cheaper for them to give a new car rather than fix the issue, a common issue amongst most large companies. Literally the only reason you are able to work on a car like this. You need more than official workshop tools, you need manuals and official practices too. Maybe you will stumble on the correct answer but that doesn’t prove you can effectively fix the issue it only proves that if you get the timing wrong you will eventually get it right but at what cost?
