Not being able to savor the flavors of food is pretty sad. Can you still smell food? I know smell has a lot more to do with tasting flavors than the tongue does. Or are your taste buds just numb right now? A guy had his gf do a taste test to see if she could taste even the smallest bit of flavor. He had hidden cups of fluids with straws. She didn't even flinch when she sipped straight vodka. She thought it was water. She thought all of them tasted like water. She could drink a bunch of straight liquor and never know it. That could be dangerous.

@@hypercane2023 Yes, I completely lost my sense of taste. Though it sounds very intuitive but not until I lost my taste did I realize that 'taste' and 'sensation' are two different things. When I lost taste/smell, I realized the best things to prioritize to make sure I wasn't miserable when eating were texture and the 5 basic tastes (salty, spicy, etc.) since those aren't governed by aromatics. One of the best snacks I found was crystallized ginger because it was sweet, spicy, and super textural with the soft outside/crunchy inside. I didn't even like candied ginger beforehand but now I love it.

A perk is that I'm pleasantly surprised anytime a bit of taste comes back. Everything is so flavourful now! :D It's about 50% back to normal. Edit: I just tried out how strong my sense of smell and taste currently are with a piece of chocolate. My sense of smell has definitely returned more than my sense of taste. I kind of need to wait a little bit before I can really notice a flavour. WIth taste, I first notice texture > temperature > flavour.

so sorry to hear you going through this. I had the same symptoms as you - no smell just basic taste (also had vaccines and stuff) and eventualy all of my sense of smell did come back and thank goodness. I appreciate these little things sooooo much more now. that said, I did try to practice and urge it along by smelling various things that I knew had strong scents - daily. like scented candles, spices/aromatics, etc - and little by little, I could smell a tiiiiiiiny bit of garlic and the sweet of the berry candle and each day it got better and better, so /hugs, hang in there and it should improve eventually and if you'd like to urge it along - smell things! (well... try to anyways :D)

Not being able to taste or smell with COVID was one of the strangest things I’ve experienced. You don’t realize how much you use those senses for everything. Deodorant, smelling if clothes are fresh and clean or not, feeling fresh and minty after brushing teeth… was a wild time 😅

I hope you get your full sense of smell and taste back soon. In 2005, I had a summer cold and lost my sense of smell/taste for 18 months! Life was not the same. BUT -- I did slowly recover both senses and now truly appreciate all the smells and tastes in the world. You're right -- texture has a lot to do with the appreciation of foods. I'm glad you did not lose your ability to burp!

I’m going through this for the second time now. The first time, a year ago, I couldn’t taste or smell absolutely anything. This time I can’t smell at all, but I can taste sweet, salty, sour, bitter, etc. My favorite things to eat while experiencing this are crunchy things and sour things! Can’t do sweet or salty bc they are just too sweet and too salty. Hope your senses come back soon and that you are all well!

Thank you for this, and I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! Dixie of Homemade Wanderlust just made a video about her experiences with this phemomena, and how she was able to return to smell and taste after two years without it. In the meantime, I would love to see some videos about interestingly textured foods, and what a good full menu for someone who is experiencing what you're experiencing might look like. Good luck with everything, and sending you wishes for speedy healing!

When I had covid in early December, I could only taste salty, burnt, bitter and spicy. I might've been able to taste umami, but I didn't try a lot of things. It was so weird, and not being able to taste sweet was probably the worst part. I was also taking paxlovid, so I didn't know which one was causing the loss of taste and smell. Luckily after 4 days of paxlovid and 6 days of covid, my taste and smell fully returned. Wish you the best!!! Keep up your hopes! Edit: I forgot, I was also able to taste nutty flavors!

Paxlovid is known for a dislikable medicinal after taste, not loss of taste. So I would say the illness was the primary culprit

Oh, I so FEEL what you're going through! I had COVID in January 2022, and lost my sense of smell. Here's the bad news: my sense of smell still comes and goes, especially with artificial scents. One of my favorite bedtime routines is to apply some watermelon-scented lip balm before I go to sleep. Every time, I will inhale the yummy smell as I apply. Sometimes it's still hit or miss as to whether or not I smell anything. Now, when I chaperoned my son's marching band competitions, I could smell every teenager's sweaty BO *clearly* :( BUT I can't smell my favorite lip balm sometimes. It's not fair! LOL (FYI, in case you're wondering, the lip balm is Pacifica Rainbow Watermelon lip balm, and it's FANTASTIC!)

@JustAnotherBuckyLover Жыл бұрын
Some dullness is not that rare, yes - because your nose is infected and congested. But the complete loss of taste and smell is NOT usual for common colds and flu. The two things are very different.
@MapleandMagnoliaCandles Жыл бұрын
@@JustAnotherBuckyLover I hate to disagree but loss of taste and smell can be common with colds especially. Loss of smell can occur at anytime when the nasal passages are irritated and inflamed. It isn't synonymous with COVID.
@JustAnotherBuckyLover Жыл бұрын
@@MapleandMagnoliaCandles If that were true, then it wouldn't be such a big deal now. But it's not true. Yes, any infection in the nose (viral or otherwise) can dull your smell/taste and in rare cases ruin it completely. But absolutely NOT to the extent or frequency seen during COVID infections. You can disagree all you want but I'm afraid the data don't back you up.

I hope your sense of smell comes back. After my 2nd COVID recovery mine never came back. As someone who loves food, it's pretty devastating.
