1:01:57 If you notice, when he's examining the "body", he touches it with the end of his pencil (the eraser part) and then taps that to his lips. Although any of the things could've made it out to his shack at any time. 1:02:24 No, he saw what would happen if it escaped so he made sure it wouldn't by smashing up the chopper, the "buggies", all communications, anything that might let it out. 1:06:22 They actually got an amputee to do that bit and took a cast of the previous actors face and made a mask for the amputee

The pencil theory has been disputed. Notice the overcast shadow beyond the pencil eraser. This means that it likely did not touch the organism. I will say that Ugo's remark at 32:05 is an interesting observation. This is new to me. It's very possible that the blood may have splashed up onto Blair's skin and crawled towards and onto a nearby orifice (mouth, nostrils, etc.) as he axed the dogs, all while not seen by the naked eye. Your second point supports this, as it proves that Blair's rationale wasn't overtaken by this Thing.

@@DavidGidey Also, Blair is a biologist - there is NO WAY he would be that stupid. He wouldn't want to catch any infections or parasites or diseases. If he has a fault, it is that he only wore short gloves while doing the autopsy. Fuch's 'small particle' theory is tricky - several characters have touched Things in the film, and not been infected: Norris injected morphine into the doctor, Windows helped with the CPR (neither ended up being infected). Clarke had lots of contact with the dog (and so did Bennings), Windows tied up Palmer etc etc

Great reaction! One thing about this movie is that it has many mysteries and many possible interpretations... all of which could be right! Personally, I and most fans of this movie tend to think that Blair was himself when he destroyed the helicopter and communications equipment. He knew someone would try to stop him if he tried to explain his plan force-quarantine the entire base by cutting them off from the rest of the world, so he just did it. He did make a big mistake by being so drunk, though, that no one trusted him after the fact. When McReady comes back in the storm and finds him wanting to come back inside, the noose is what shows us he's been replaced with an imposter. He planned to hang himself in there, but the Thing took him over. Who destroyed the blood packs is one of the movie's unanswered mysteries, though. It's unlikely it was Blair, though, since he was already locked up when the test idea was suggested.

Yep - Carpenter was very upset that it didn't perform well. Years later is it one of the most highly regarded horror / suspense films of all time, and has legions of fans all over the world. I've watched lots of reactions to The Thing, and I haven't seen anyone bored, and I haven't seen anyone call it terrible at the end

Blair got infected out in the shack, but he had a lot of help assembling the ship. The fire wasn't killing the creature. The various parts recombined. It turned into a form that could burrow through the ice and help Blair assemble that ship.
@manicmidwife
@manicmidwife Ай бұрын
There is the suggestion that he was infected earlier - after the computer simulation and before the meltdown. Firstly because he is wearing diffrent clothes (now why is that?) and secondly because he could get to work on the saucer right away. All he needed to do it make the others uneasy about having him around. The hangman noose was just window dressing I think
@wentshow
@wentshow Ай бұрын
@manicmidwife True, you can go with that interpretation, but my sticking point with that is there was no reason to have the computer simulation scene then. It shows that the human Blair would've done the same thing as Blair the thing. He had every reason to go paranoid. Meanwhile, would the creature have thought it necessary to assemble a ship if Blair hadn't freaked out? Before Blair's fit, The Thing wasn't being proactive. The blood bank was shown sabotaged only hours after Blair's panic. (Winter in Antarctica, the sun had risen before they banished Blair, likely for the last time.) Slight digression: have you noticed that the computer scene doesn't fit? It's the only scene in the film that I think couldn't have happened as shown. It took place only in Blair's head. He had no time to generate a computer program like that and even those simple graphics would've taken hours, if not days. He then treats it like a ChatGPT, asking questions in plain language (only 40 years ahead of it's time!) It told him nothing he couldn't have figured out on his own. The expression on his face during the scene is the same one he had when Childs asked him the question that then transitioned to the computer scene, But the computer told us what *he* was thinking, probably right at that moment. He's depicted as having human depth. I also think that parts of The Thing were surviving the burnings or were hidden away and amalgamated into the version we saw at the very end, and it could burrow under the ice. But I'm trying to retroactively answer questions left open. Carpenter didn't know how people in the future would be watching and rewatching this film, and discussing it's many mysteries.k

When Childs said that Blair killed the rest of the dogs Clark ran to check. That's the emotional reaction of a human for his canine charges. I don't think that the Thing's mimicry would extend that far.

based on the novella , who goes there , written by John w. Campbell in 1938 ! this was the second film adaptation , the first was 1951`s the thing from another world , and there is a prequel to this film , the thing 2011 ! most people dislike it because it`s a mix of cgi and practical effects , whereas the 82 film is totally practical effects ! it`s not as bad as many claim , and gives a view on what happened at the Norwegian base ! check it out !

Man, you hit on the perfect descriptors: _Lovecraftian_ and _Cronenbergian._ 👾🥶 *EDIT:* Blair was destroying the helocopter and radio equipment so the alien couldn't get to the civilized world. Only after they locked him away did he get infected. That's my take.

Yes, the Thing is obviously an organism whose villain origin story is predominantly based on its supreme insult that people don't know what to call it, so they called it The Thing. :D Maybe it got created like in Ghostbusters 2 with a bunch of guys yelling meanly at a petri dish of goo. :D I saw this movie shortly after its release which would have made me 8 years old, and this movie forever traumatized me. Anyone considering the possibility they may find life in outer space or would like to have a chat alone with an alien being should watch this movie, because we need to be super-careful with that. Have a flame thrower just in case anyway. And make sure it's working and fully fueled! 28:05 "But the organism is still in the base" You're right! So few people realize that the first time seeing the movie. I didn't, but I was 8 so I think I get a pass. But yeah, the original thing they brought back that was on the table under the blanket is roaming around freely, taken some form, who knows what it is now. Free to roam around the camp and take whoever it finds alone. 49:51 At this point in the movie, the thing that attacked Bennings is still roaming freely, as well as the part of the dog thing that escaped through the roof of the dog kennel, and one of the things has gotten in to Blair. Lots of things running around.

i've never vibed with this film whenever i try to watch it, for whatever reason (love the Cronenburgian effects though). buuut i definitely support you in watching more, older horror films. like 80s and before. the original The Wicker Man (1973) is probably my favourite film of all time, a creepy, folsky, weird, fun, mysterious time. definitely a 'cult classic' type of film. it's probably not for everyone, haha. i'd also love to see you watch the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). it's such a stellar classic, such a grimy, visceral film, with an ecstatically weird climax. it really holds up in my opinion, and is meant to have sort of originated the slasher genre (although it's much more of a piece of art than what may come to mind when one thinks of 'slasher films', in my opinion). really enjoying watching, thanks ☺

In one separate comment, Antarctica is a very important research location. The ice there down deep js hundreds of thousands of years old, thats fact. So you learn a lot about past eras with climate, conditions past, because on earth, the past geologically is present and future and can come around again, the more you know the better to prepare. Knowledge is power. Its also a political. all nations have signed treaties saying Antarctica is to be used and studied peacefully for science, in effect. And so far, america and russia have outposts there, never any problems between them. But again, you must investigate to understand whats in the future that will impact everyone on the planet. Hiding under the bed wont fix anything kinda thing ...

Stop calling it the Thing: What, ask the Thing its pronouns so we don't insult the poor little guy? To be fair, non-professional shooters trying to shoot from a moving object against a small moving target is not a piece of cake. Trying to throw a grenade in -50 degree weather when it gets stuck to your glove is kind of difficult. The Norwegians were untrained for combat, scared, and experiencing a lack of sleep, but they were just determined to stop The Thing even at the cost of their own lives. They were basically telling the Americans that it was not a dog and that they need to get away from that thing. Yeah the dog Jed is a great actor. He was an actual wolf hybrid. If you want to see a prequel to what happened in this movie you can watch The Thing 2011. It explains events that occurred previously in the Norwegian camp. It was not quite as good, but it was OK and it gives some background. Not just the blood... every part of the Thing can infect. It is just an alien being that is cellular. It is like a bunch of individual amoebas that can transform themselves into any other kind of cell or cluster of cells and imitate anything of any size or shape by connecting up with one another. The more of them there are, the smarter they are and the more they know. Wilford Brimley (Blair) might look like a chubby little guy, but he has been a Marine, Bodyguard, Cowboy, Stunt Actor, Blacksmith, and Actor in a bunch of movies starting with Westerns. He has had a very physical life, so yeah, he can throw some people around. Blair was not The Thing at the beginning. When he touched his pencil to the autopsied dog thing, then touched his own mouth, he infected himself, but slowly since it was likely one or a handful of cells that got on him. During this slow infection, he probably did not even realize what was happening to him until it took over several hours later. When he was building a spaceship, he was using knowledge from the previously imitated alien beings that piloted the ship at the very start of the movie. The Thing uses all of the skills, knowledge, and abilities of everything it has imitated at will pretty much, so Blair knew how to make a spaceship because the aliens absorbed before knew how to make a spaceship. At the end, Blair was part of that large thing. The Childs and MacReady ending was intentional to create paranoia and mystery. There are a lot of theories based on a lot of different things about who was or was not The Thing at the end.

i think this is a good movie but 2 things but me a bit.... 1 the thing being alien is a bit weird. sure it could have taken on the form on a space faring species and gained its knowledge to come here.... but i need motivation. space travel is hard. no species smart enough to pull it off would be coming here for resources or any other silly reason aside from finding other intelligent life. they would pass thousands of planets with the resources they need before getting here. the gore is a bit over the top. definitely just going for shock factor and what can we do. the transforming seems crazy slow at times while fast at others. i dont get what it was doing with the dogs. was it trying to consume them all and replace them all? it could have just killed them all so they werent making noise. once it took on human form it could talk and had enough knowledge to be rebuilding a space ship. so tell us what you want man! i need to know the motivation! lol like if it was just some ancient earth creature frozen in the ice i would have accepted it being a mindless shape shifting creature but we have clear intelligence here. but yea while those are major problems i have with the plot they nailed it on the suspense, atmosphere, the wild effects even though i think they were a bit over the top and excessive.
@MySerpentine

No one said it's the one who made the original ship. It could've been picked up by accident. And it's quite possible that the only real motive it had was to get away, and that it knew better than to try talking to a bunch of lunatics with flamethrowers. It might also borrow its sapience from its prey, so that when it was a dog its only goal was to feed.
