You remember that talk earlier in the movie that it wants to bury itself and let the rescue team find it? Well, let's just speculate that neither Childs nor Macready got assimilated. There are still going to be pieces of it that formed into small creatures in various places, maybe buried, in the American camp, in the Norwegian Camp, at the UFO crash site. There's practically no way the humans won, maybe bought a little time. When a rescue team arrives, this story keeps going. I still think we'll get a sequel some day.

The ambiguity is so much fun. I've seen this movie so many times and there are a few speculations and theories that Childs could have been the Thing, or even MacReady. But the ending I've stuck with since I saw it as a kid in the 80's was ... MacReady was throwing around those Molotov cocktails earlier destroying everything. And quite possibly that remaining bottle could have been full of gasoline that he didn't use and was thinking he could down it before he froze to death. Upon seeing Childs show up, in order to test him, he offered it to him to drink, and he took a sip no problem, because the Thing wouldn't know the difference in taste. He outsmarted the Thing, but still lost. So he just kind of laughs..... 😁

Yes! I love when people do reactions to this movie. The Norwegian guy in the beginning said: "Get the hell out of here, that's not a dog, it's some kind of thing! It's imitating a dog, it isn't real! Get away, you idiots!" I went to see this movie when it came out and everyone else and all of my friends went to see E.T. The theater was only half-full and the people there were having the time of their lives watching this masterpiece. Carpenter has done it again with the perfect mix of horror, suspense and top tier paranoia. I don't know how MacReady didn't get infected when that blood jumped out of the petri dish. I thought that everyone in the room got infected when Norris' stomach opened up and his intestines and veins were splashing the green blood everywhere The characters did not trust anything or anyone else because they could not tell who was human or an alien. They didn't even know if they were infected or not. I love the how Carpenter tried to misdirect us by making us think that Clark was infected because he spent time with the dog. Blaire immediately understood the magnitude of the situation when he did his analysis of the organism. He did not want anyone that's infected getting back to civilization. The computer analysis estimated that it would take a little over three years to infect the whole world population. That's scary as hell. I was so happy that I went to see this movie. I told all my friends about it and we all went to see it the next weekend and they loved it. The practical effects are amazing. This movie holds up to any horror movie today. Carpenter is a genius at suspense and horror.

Some thoughts and trivia.... Reaction videos to The Thing are GUARANTEED to do one thing. First... "Noooo! Not the dog! Don't hurt the dog!" Twenty minutes later! "Burn it! Burn the dog! No wonder they were trying to shoot it!" The dog was played by Jed the Wolfdog. He also starred in White Fang and The Journey of Natty Gann. Jed was extremely intelligent, and just as good an actor as his human co-stars (or better). He died in 1995 at the age of 18, a very old age for a half-wolf, half Alaskan Malamute. It looks like Mac is being a sore loser when he destroys the chess computer at the beginning. But if you look carefully, you'll see that Mac was right; the computer WAS cheating. In the DVD commentary, John Carpenter says (and I agree) that the moment where Mac says, "We're not getting out of here alive, but neither is that Thing," and the others silently agree, it's a comforting moment in an otherwise grim and bleak movie. Like you noted, at least they can trust each other a bit, and dying to save humanity is a pretty good way to go. My belief: Mac was human. It could go either way with Childs. They'd already stated they shouldn't accept food from anyone else, so it's possible when Mac gives Childs the bottle and Childs takes a pull, Mac knows Childs is a thing, and his little laugh says, "Gotcha." Or maybe Childs is human, and Mac's chuckle says, "Well, we've had a hell of a week, haven't we." Either way, Mac knows he has to kill Childs then burn both of them to be sure, so what else can he do but laugh?

The Thing does not need a host, it absorbs and converts all the organic cells to be more of The Thing. It could call upon the organic design of the various beings it has absorbed in the past, and re-organize the material into imitations or more useful similar pieces(claws, dog heads, spider legs, eye stalks, organs that shoot disolving/absorbing liquids, human heads with sharp teeth, etc.). It seems its only limitations were the mass of material to use and time to convert it. Also, it inherited the weak heart of Norris(speculation is that Norris had a stent that The Thing could not imitate and did not realize or didn't care about - he was the first available human the dog took over). By anticipating the blood test, planting evidence to frame MacReady; avoiding scrutiny by not being the guy in charge(Norris); passing as the humans taken over including their memories, manerisms, and character; and pointing out the head-spider-Thing(Palmer did that) to throw suspicion off itself; and building an advanced craft out of parts from other machines (to a degree - didn't have time to finish); it showed it was intelligent and aborbed the knowledge of other beings (dogs, humans, aliens and their spaceship tech). You're of the few reactors that took the spread to all of humanity very seriously, and speculated that if either Childs or MacReady were still human then they should make sure a possible Thing does not just freeze. I think MacReady was going to keep playing it cool until he saw a good opportunity to get Childs in case he is The Thing. When the film left off Childs had a flamethrower and MacReady was not moving well, but his laugh IMO was him realizing the real Childs wouldn't be so cordial and agreeable; and take a drink handed to him. He knew he had more action to take eventually.

@@castlew4162 Thank you for the well thought out post. In regards to the thing not needing a host, thats the main way it seems to ‘reproduce’. Seems to be a parasite IMO thats somewhat intelligent but only focused on survival. By its very nature it invades anything it comes in contact with > kills it > then imitates it to blend in and do the whole process over again. And yes Im with Blair and feel bad for his character, he knew how serious this threat to humanity was and he should have done a better job communicating that with everyone!
@mutanthybrid3466Ай бұрын
The shadow on the wall when the dog walked into the room near the beginning was Norris. Yes, it has their memories or it would not be able to work machinery, speak languages, or act like the person it imitated. Norris had a heart condition, so when the Thing imitated him, it had to imitate the heart condition as well. When it had a heart attack, it acted like it was dying and dead, but when shocked by the defibrillator, it reacted to defend itself. Even though Norris was supposed to die, the individual cells of the Thing were all alive still.
@OfficialDNJmoviehouseАй бұрын
I thought it was def either Norris or Palmer!
@mutanthybrid3466Ай бұрын
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse Yeah, the silhouette was Norris's shadow. Palmer was imitated off screen, probably by the piece of the Thing that escaped during the dog kennel scene. Later on, Blair was alone in the tool shed after his psychotic break and probably slowly succumbed to a slow infection since he infected himself by touching the pencil to the dog Thing when he autopsied it, then touched his own mouth with the pencil afterwards. All that time, he was likely being taken over one cell at a time until it finally took over.

I hate that scene (the two people melding) and feel it's completely the wrong interpretation of how that came to be. We see at least twice how the creature begins to transform. The dog's face splits open. Palmer's entire head splits open. It makes sense that the one they find had started transforming, with its head splitting open, and the Norwegian scientists burn it. We are never shown the creature melding into another person to absorb it. The one time we see it absorbing someone was Bennings, and it had invaded his body, not melded with it.

That beautiful husky was actually half wolf and may have the best actor in the movie, no offense to the humans. And the Chess Wizard did in fact cheat, the winning move was not a valid move. Also the shadow on the wall when the dog walked in the room was NOT from one of the actors in the movie, They used the shadow from someone in the film crew to throw everyone off, clever.

The power dynamic at the end of the movie is equal between Mac and Childs. Child has a flame thrower and Mac has a hand gun in a hip holster. You can see it when he does the barrel roll with a stick of dynamite in his hand just before he blows up the Blair Thing.

Superman vs The Thing, who wins? I have this thought occasionally, because when I try to think of what species or character could beat the thing, there's not much. Superman could heat vision the thing to death after detecting it, but the problem would be detecting it. Maybe he can see the thing cells, but the problem would be seeing all of them everywhere. If the thing has already begun to spread over earth, Superman could never be sure he's killing all of it in time, short of causing nuke-level explosions.

***3 SOLID REASONS WHY CHILDS IS THE THING:*** #1 - Childs Jacket Swap When McReady and the two men go to give the Doc the blood test out in the shack, they leave Childs (wearing a Blue jacket) alone to guard the door. There are 3 jackets on hooks on the wall behind Childs with the colours of the jackets being Blue, Green and Beige. When the Thing kills you, it rips your clothes apart and when you see the same room several minutes later, the jacket colours have been changed to Beige, Green and Green. Note there are also other jackets hanging on the left and right of the room, thus allowing the Thing to make the swap and unknowingly return 3 ‘out of sync' colour jackets to the same wall. Childs is shown wearing a Green jacket in the final 2-minutes of the film with McReady, not his original Blue jacket when he was last seen guarding the door, hence Childs is the Thing. #2 - Childs Breathing The last 2-minutes of dialogue out in the freezing cold between McReady and Childs clearly shows the steam McReady makes as a human when he breathes. But Childs makes no steam at all when he breathes because he is non-human and either has the same temperature inside his body as outside, or is mimicking breathing, hence Childs is the Thing. #3 - Childs First Drink When sitting down in the snow at the very end of the film, McReady hears a faint creek of wood behind him and half raises a bottle to his mouth. The 'drink' McReady later passes to Childs is a Molotov cocktail (many Molotov’s were just thrown to set the research station on fire) and after drinking the gasoline, Childs has NO REACTION and makes NO COMMENT. A human would either not drink from the bottle because of the smell, or would spit the gasoline out immediately, but the Thing has no reference to the smell or taste of ANY fluid and as a result 'outs' itself. McReady smiles, laughs a little to himself about the Thing failing his second test (the first was the blood test) and rests his head down knowing the dire situation he finds himself in and he has been checkmated like the computer chess game he played in earlier in the film, hence Childs is the Thing. Conclusion: At the end of the film McReady and the Thing are seated next to each other out in the freezing cold with McReady NOT ‘waiting to see what happens next...', but unfortunately for him, KNOWING ‘what happens next...’.
@two-bearshigh-fiving929328 күн бұрын
No he's wearing the same jacket lol it's literally just covered in so much snow it looks like a different jacket
@DaviesMartinezBeats28 күн бұрын
@@two-bearshigh-fiving9293 - Some people say Childs jacket is Blue in the final scene, however, if this is true, it still doesn’t explain the 2 ‘out of sync' swapped colour jackets on the wall as mentioned above. If this is the case, this shows the Thing swapped Childs Blue ripped jacket for the Blue undamaged jacket seen originally hanging on the wall, but was later shown replaced with a Beige jacket.

Consider that an alien takes host of a person. But that alien blood could be very minimal - even a drop. Then consider that drop must be concentrated from who knows how many alien beings, from who knows how many other planets. It becomes plain to see that it is possible all of the American team are infected by the end. And in the need for continued survival, 1 alien could be a villain or rival to another. Thus Childs AND McCready could be alien, not just one. And as was shown with the guy who became sick while standing by the window - it's possible none know they have been changed until challenged. One last thing: McCready had that bottle of 'liquor' when he left the shed at the beginning. Why take it with you unless you need it near at all times. Yes, the guy was shot. McCready did not know that until after he left the shed. And he seemed to always have it with him.
@OfficialDNJmoviehouseАй бұрын
@@tenjed4224 its possible that only a drop can infect someone, but i dont think its a guarantee. Remember the husky guy? (Think his name is carver). Also i think Mac having the bottle at the end is just him being an alcoholic lol.
@tenjed4224Ай бұрын
@OfficialDNJmoviehouse shown but not proven. How do we know the test worked the same on every one? Mccready did the test on himself, but may have been able to fake the result. We are talking a rudimentary blood test. And some aliens might be more advanced than others. Maybe he and Childs were more advanced? As for the liquor bottle, sure mccready was an alcoholic. But, again, why bring it out of the shed in that situation? Mccready did not know the other guy had been shot till after he left the shed to find out what was going on. He already had the bottle of liquor with him. He might be an alcoholic. But that would be way to the extreme.

@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse just copy-pasted my ideas from another comment (could not link it here): M(a)cReady is the Thing, Childs is not - here is my line of thinking: 1. The Thing is extremely transmissible and contagious. If you watch the movie attentively, you will see that the american crew was f*cked up on many levels. The "dog" that licked the face of one of the guys in the very beginning. The "dog" moving around the base without supervision for god knows how long. The creature that escaped through the ceiling in the dog cage. Contamination via body delivered from norwegian base. All of those are completely different ways for the Thing to take over the crew. Once it's there, there is no winning scenario for humans. So at the end of the movie, there is no way the Thing is destroyed. 2. Another clue is how Blair behaved. When the team isolated Blair, he was ok with it. He just said "I don't know who to trust". When later MacReady visits Blair, Blair did not want to be isolated anymore. His trust issues suddenly disappeared and he wanted to be in contact with others. By that time, he was the Thing, because this is exactly what Thing wants. We also see the rope, which indicates Blair was preparing to commit suicide so the Thing does not get him, but the Thing got him anyway. The Thing does not want to die, in contrast to humans who lost hope. Similar situation happened to Fuchs who burned himself so the Thing does not take over him. 3. Initially, when the spaceship crashed, the Thing got out and froze nearby, in order to wait thousands of years to be discovered. The Thing is not ok with dying, but ok with freezing, because freezing does not kill it. 4. After the camp is destroyed, MacReady answers the "what do we do?" question with "(we) wait here for a little while". This is what the Thing wants. This situation is a death sentence for humans, but not for the Thing. It will just freeze and wait. It's "little while" could be thousands of years and it is ok with it. This is the Thing's intention clearly marked by words, similar to Blair-Thing who wanted to get out while there were still people in the camp. 5. Director of the movie, John Carpenter once said "Yes, I know. I know who’s the Thing and who’s not in the very end." variety.com/2023/film/news/the-thing-ending-debate-john-carpenter-knows-final-answer-1235753653/ While this is a vague statement, I'd say it hints that one person is the Thing and another is not. Life is constant struggle and drama, and there are always opposite parties fighting each other. This idea is very familiar to film directors. 6. Childs is not the Thing. While the Thing is clearly intelligent and, besides bodies, can absorb knowledge and memory, it only imitates. We never see the Thing operating any kind of machinery or using tools in an efficient way. It is also naturally afraid of fire. And at the very end, Childs is carrying a FLAMEthrower. 6.1 Some may say that "Blair" (the Thing) was able to use tools and tried to build some kind of a spaceship. The hint here, it did not work, because the Thing only imitates. It has some knowledge of spacecrafts absorbed from other alien lifeforms, but it cannot use it efficiently. That's why the initial ship crashed in the first place. The Thing took over a ship that was used by other alien lifeforms, and the Thing did not know how to fly it, so it crashed. 6.2 Another hint that the Thing is bad at technology is the situation with Norris. The Thing got him, but was unable to imitate/use the heart implant he likely had (could be some sort of implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD), e.g. for treating arrhythmia). That's why Norris's body, lacking the helping device, experiences a heart attack. So the Thing is attracted to living cells and cannot imitate non-living things, like cloth or metal. If the body of the victim has such things, they are left outside when the Thing takes over. 6.3 Childs still has an earring in his right ear.

@OfficialDNJmoviehouse You have to take under consideration how long it would take him to get back above ground and then make it to where he meets Childs, in that weather. That's not "immediately".
