Hi Ethan. To answer your question, the “color” of the bullhead more or less comes from the color of their chin barbels. So a black bullhead has black barbels, yellow has whitish/yellowish, and brown has half black half yellow. The one you have at 5:13 is a brown bullhead, which you can also identify because of its mottled/camo pattern on its body (which also gives it its species name nebulosus). Don’t go off the body color for species; fish will change color depending on environment and stress. I used to have a pet black bullhead; when he was happy he was black and when he was stressed he’d turn yellow.

Also i wouldn't recommend lipping them. Out of the 4 big catfish types in the US, bullheads probably have the most painful.

I would concur those were brown bullheads. Also i commiserate with the bleeding after lipping a bullhead. I lipped one of my first bullheads (a yellow). It wasn’t a big fish but it bruised my thumb and broke the skin. Never lipped another bullhead since.

Oh wow. I caught my first fish (sunfish) on a small lake in New York State in 1956 or so. (My dad and mom were Salvation Army Officers stationed in Albany. My dad was the youth guy so he ran a Salvation Army Camp. My two brothers and I fished all the time at the camp. The camp was called Saddle Lake Camp and was located in Moreau, NY. Up near Saratoga and Glens Falls.) We also caught Bull Heads in that lake. This really brought back some childhood memories that I haven't thought about in years. Thanks for sharing!

@@taperboy70 Oh wow. That's pretty interesting. Too bad about the lake though. I have fond memories of that "camp." I used to wade the shallow end of the lake and catch newts in the grass there. I also used to turn over logs and limbs in the woods amd catch them after they left the water stage and turned bright orange. Thanks for letting me know.

Funny you said that about never running into Bullheads in Michigan. When I was a kid my family would go up to the Sagatuck area for vacations and we caught tons of bullheads there haha. Aside from smallmouth bass they're basically the only fish I've ever caught in Michigan. As for identification, I think you're right about them being brown bullheads just based on the coloration and the darker chin barbles.
