I disagree with this sentiment to an extent. It seems to be an extremely likely possibility that the mother's insistence of giving the ex a second chance is rooted in deep mental issues inflicted outside the mother's control. The failings she has commited seem to be a result of that trauma. To think that she has utter, complete agency would be a bit too unfair imo and to label the person themselves as the failure without acknowledging external factors is too harsh. The mother has some strong values about commitment and destiny, which has led to passionate conflicts, so I definitely agree that her acts are out of a fair amount of stubborness

Okay, so first of all, the ex having some balls trying to come sideways at OP about what her mother is going through is hilarious. Second of all, the fact that due to the ex being practically a doppelganger, if not relative to OP's father; and her mother would throw caution to the wind starting a relationship with said ex is highly concerning. I have to give OP's aunt the side-eye for bothering to keep the mother's intentions, let alone the possible connection a secret from OP. Okay, so when the mom and aunt saw that her boyfriend looked almost identical to her father they were weirded out but happy for her, (and the mom was gross about it) but shouldn't they have been EXTREMELY worried that he could be her brother!!?? More people should adopt her mindset of "Cheaters aren't worth staying with, keep them out of your life" If more people (and let's face it, mainly more men) adopted this mindset, a lot of these stories would be a lot less dramatic. i dont buy moms story at all. If she was heartbroken by her ex cheating on her then she wouldnt be so forgiving seeing that happen to her own daughter. it doesnt make sense that she would let the father go without child support for 18 years. I bet she was the cheater the whole time and reversed the story. Cheaters empathize with each other to avoid accountability. "Dad" found out the kid wasnt his and bailed, mom felt massive guilt for getting caught and has idolized the relationship she ruined.
