Common Farm Flowers

Күн бұрын

For that gap between the deciduous leaves falling and the lush evergreens of Christmas my challenge for you this weekend is go to foraging twigs and seed heads in your gardens and growing spaces. What can you find which will make a twiggery pokery arrangement? Look for interesting shapes, textures, colours, lichen, buds, seeds - all make interest in a spray of twigs in a good heavy based container. Have fun! And remember that if you share pictures of what you make on your instagram and tag me, @commonfarmflowers, I'll share some of them on my stories.
Every time any of us encourage our friends and neighbours outside to find material for cutting and arranging the ripple effect of fresh air and exercise and close looking at nature and the calming effect of working with fine motor skills makes the world a better place.
For a full list of workshops and demos held by flower farmer and florist Georgie Newbery see here to book your place www.commonfarm.... Remember, workshop and demo places make excellent Christmas gifts.
For an ad-free version of this clip, all the info re the redesign of the flower farm and the new studio being created in the field, and all Georgie's new clips with extra tips, news and regular live at 5s, do join her KZbin club. You can join up here: / @theflowerfarmer

Wonderful way to start my day. Fab video as ever. I’m so pleased you didn’t put the wizzy-wizzy on. I prefer to watch you make everything in real time, even if it took two hours and you didn’t have the time to talk, I’d watch it. It’s meditative. Have a lovely day.

Gathering fall and winter garden and woods remnants and arranging them in old crockery has long been one of my favorite things. And they last and last. Queen Anne's Lace, ground pine, poplar seed heads, grasses, rudbeckia seed heads, Indian Blanket seedheads, cones of all sizes and shapes, thistles, vines, hawthorn, willow, on and on. There is so much beauty and peace in the "spent" garden, grassland and woodland. Thank you for the adventure.

Brilliant! and Congrats on you awards! Bravo!! // My mother-in-law, may she rest in peace, was a master flower arranger and floral judge in Ohio and Indiana. She was renown for her dried autumnal arrangements she wildcrafted. Well it was the '70's and back to the land was a thing. Very popular at flower shows. Love what you share!

I feel once a flower arranger you immediately look at nature and the countryside very very differently. The colours, the textures we are so blessed in this country when you think of some countries only have rubble and dust. No green, no wild animals and no bird song. And then the icing on the cake we can sit and watch your videos. Ain't we lucky😊

Hello Georgie and Teacake from cold Alaska. I just discovered your channel and I am completely smitten ! I do not think you are weird at all talking to the trees as I do the same thing. My husband and I operate a peony farm here in Fairbanks, Alaska. We only grow peonies but I do cut foliage from my chokecherry tree and lilac bushes. Both foliage hold up well in water and the seed pods on the lilac look tropical to me. I am a self-taught florist and am truly enjoying learning new things from you. Hearing you speak as you go about your demonstration is so wonderful (healing almost).

Amazing. We had early thanksgiving because of family schedules, if I had seen this before Saturday I would have made one for the dining room. So I will put it on my 2024 November calendar to make next year. Thank you for the wonderful idea. That name, twiggery pokery, is magnificent, lol. I have to remember it and use it as often as I can fit it into conversation, lol. Also, completely off topic, those whimsical candlesticks on the mantle are begging me to duplicate them if I can. They go perfectly with twiggery pokery I think.😎. Have a great week! TeresaSue

Your arrangements are lovely. We have gorgeous bright red Winterberry in the surrounding local woods. Im going out in our own woods to pick twigs. We have tons of lichen and twigs with tiny old looking almost black pine cones at fall from our trees. Top it all off with saved dried Allium seed pods and it should be great. 😊.

It’s beautiful Georgie. You can appreciate it better against the wall. When you said you can’t control the design it reminded me of water colour as it has a mind of its own. I'm with you about the trees. We live opposite a cemetery and the holly trees are covered in berries that I know the birds will polish off around Christmas. The poplars ash and oaks all have buds. That makes me smile as it's a portent of things to come. I love it.

I love your content, Georgie. I get inspired every time I watch your videos so I’m hoping for some inspiration with what to do with the raspberry canes I will be cutting from the field of raspberries I grow for the fruit. Normally, once cut, canes are burnt but that’s not environmentally friendly. Do you have any creative suggestions that could provide income beyond just selling the fruit? I chop and dry some canes for kindling for our wood stove but that’s a drop in the bucket! Thank you, Heather

Challenge Accepted /FAILED! Well, I was out raking leaves, enjoying The Last of Autumn, preparing a barrel for composting over Winter. Hours later discovered a burning arm with a quite large tick embedding itself in the crook of my inner arm. Emergency Medical Fire Department medics arrived and spent 1/2 hour digging the monster tick out of my arm. Thankfully they were able to remove most all of it. Snow predicted soon. I'm quite done with Mother Nature for now.
