The Ultimate Fingerpicking Guitar Course: acousticguitar...
In this video, you learn how to get good at guitar fast.
It’s simply not enough when practicing to pick up your guitar and play.
Practice does not make perfect, it makes permanent, so you want to be sure you are practicing in the very best ways.
In this lesson, you learn the ONE thing I changed when practicing the guitar that MASSIVELY impacted the results I got.
This one thing is so simple, yet powerful beyond measure when implemented in your practice routine.
What is it?
In a nutshell,
Engaging your brain with your fingers.
Most people practice guitar with mindless repetition.
Repetition is good and necessary, however alone it will only yield mediocre results.
You MUST engage your brain with what your fingers are doing at ALL times when practicing guitar.
This is a game changer!
In this lesson, you learn exactly how to do this by rotating your focus through a number of areas while practicing a single item on guitar, for example, a riff, a chord change, your speed and fluency etc.
To learn the very best way to become a great fingerpicking guitarist, including the best ways to practice, check out my online fingerpicking guitar program: acousticguitar...

You are right about the practice and how to optimize the time. For me it’s the discipline part that lets me down. Thanks again for the wise words.

You are welcome Stuart :) Yes, definitely requires some discipline. Are you referring to discipline to pick up the guitar to play/practice, or discipline to focus when you are actually practicing?

This is brilliant, and applicable to learning beyond the guitar. I am an educator in higher ed and I plan on sharing this with colleagues. I need to put a name to it. Do you have a name in mind? If not, I'll call it Simon Candy's Bulletin Board Model. Each line into the 'board' is a pushpin, or a tack, selected from a supply of pins that have names. Maybe there is a better analogy. In any case, thanks for this great post, Simon, and the other help you have given me.

You are very welcome David Howe! I love the name! :) I often think of a similar analogy where anything to be mastered requires you to work at it from several different angles, each angle is a nail. One nail won't hold anything in position too well, but several nails will etc if that makes sense?

Hi Don. Yes, you can and should rotate your focus on various aspects of the piece you are working on. Just make the piece itself the central item :)
