Thank you. i have been trying to understand modes for a while now but now that I know that they must be used in context to the chord progression it makes sense. When your head is focused on the wrong approach it is often hard to see the simplicity of the solution. Your a legend mate 😉👍 Cheers

Excellent lesson man. You nailed it. Probably seen 500 videos I'm exaggerating but I've seen many many videos on the modes you were like the best one to explain it clearly!!! After all these videos I've watched I was kind of getting to this knowledge before I saw your video but you just put an explanation point on it in a great way to show it on one string, just really illustrating it quite well. I'm finally getting really clear on it. Now it's just a matter of figuring out how to learn it and memorize it really well scales are easy to memorize because theyre shapes. However modes is just really more knowing the notes the chord tones within those shapes

I appreciate this video with your emphasis on what each mode sounds like. I have never seen the modes explained by going up and down horizontally on a single string before. All the videos on modes I have seen have shown them vertically across the neck using all 6 strings in a box pattern. I would like to see a video explaining the theory behind the modes and videos with each video covering one mode . Thank you.

Glad you like the video Craig :) I have videos scheduled for release shortly that cover individual modes, so look out for these as they should further your understanding :)

This is my first introduction to modes. I had no clue what they were before. However, the sound of each mode is certainly familiar. I love that you emphasize just listening to them to get familiar with the sound rather than worry about the theory behind it (which, of course, is helpful, also). It was also helpful how you compared a mode to a certain sound or style of music, e.g., Spanish, Blues, etc. I never would have guessed all those sounds (modes) come from the C Major scale.
@acousticguitarlessons2 жыл бұрын
Great that the video was useful to you Ninah! Yes, absolutely focus on the sound. The theory is important too, however, without the focusing on the sound modes remain to be an abstract thing that is hard to get your head around.

You are welcome Dave! Yes, it is all about how we perceive what we are hearing. It is amazing how it all works and why it is so important to learn the sound of modes to really get it as opposed to just the theory :)

@acousticguitarlessons2 жыл бұрын
Yes, focus on how each mode sounds, and the feelings it evokes in you. The theory is important too, but alone won't complete your understanding of modes or how to use them in your own playing etc

Hey, nice video . I thought you were going to demonstrate all the mode starting on c for contrast . Most piano videos leave us with the impression that modes start on specific white keys . The crucial thing is the sequence of intervals . Modes on piano are taught in a way that makes it more confusing . What I did like is your emphasis on the sound or mood of the mode. I thought I cracked D Dorian for live playing and then someone played a tune in E Dorian and I was lost! As far as I know no one has demoed the modes starting on same home key….. they all ( mostly piano) use different white keys . I still enjoyed the video … good work with backing drone tones .. cheers
@acousticguitarlessons Жыл бұрын
Hi George, glad you liked the video :) Yes, beginning each mode on the same root note, for example all modes beginning from a C note is a great way to really hear the difference between each mode and is something I would most definitely do in addition to what I cover in this video. The purpose of this video was to cover the modes within a single key, but your point is a great one and another way to work with the modes. There is never one single way to get something down, it's going to be a combination of approaches that' leads to the mastery of something. Another good way to become more familiar with modes and understand them is to play them in the order of brightness. That would be: Lydian Ionian Mixolydian Dorian Aeolian Phrygian Locrian Where Lydian is the brightest sounding mode and then we move down decreasing that brightness one note at a time until we reach Locrian. So, playing the modes within a single key, then from a single root note, and then in the order of brightness will combine together to familiarise your ear with the unique and characteristic sound of each mode.
@georgefenning4844 Жыл бұрын
I like the concept of brightness. I did see one piano site where this kind of concept was suggested. Your video is the first to explain modes well on a guitar . Tradional Celtic music likes to hover around Dorian andmixolydian . Modern folk utilised aeolian and Ionian while dipping into Dorian and mixolydian. Any thoughts on why these modes were so popular ? Personally I love the symmetry and ambiguity of Dorian and the flattened seventh of mixolydian ..

Hi Simon. Excellent introduction to this. Not to go too far into theory, a couple of questions ... (1) Typically does the mode change regularly throughout a single piece of music (eg. as the backing chord changes) or does it usually stay the same. (2) How is the mode expressed in sheet music? Is there something specific. Or is it just a combination of the signature and the current chord. (3) Re difference between modes and keys ... why would I write a piece of music in C major Dorian and not D minor?
@acousticguitarlessons2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, thanks for checking out the video and glad you liked it :) The mode can change within a song. Typically it changes from modes within the same key, for example from one mode of C major to another, but can also change from modes within different keys.
@acousticguitarlessons2 жыл бұрын
To your other question, it’s not C Major Dorian, it would be D Dorian which is a minor mode. There are different minor modes. A lot of the time you will be in Aeolian which is the minor mode based off the 6th note/degree in the major scale, but the Dorian mode is very common particularly with bands like Pink Floyd and Santana etc
@CarlWinter-oy8uf Жыл бұрын
Wow --this is far too complex -ionian/dorian/phrygian/lydian/locrian. ??modes --is this not for virtuosos like Vai /Satriani and that Swede -Malmsteen -with super fast arpeggios ? You have scared me off --only for maestros !
@acousticguitarlessons Жыл бұрын
Not at all. Any song you hear is using a mode of some kind, even if it is the Inonian Mode which is the major scale. If you are new to modes, I totally get how they can be confusing, but if you persist in working with them you will have a whole new understanding of music that will only benefit your guitar playing :)
