We run three Win7 systems because we weren't going to go to Windows 8 (what is a smartphone UI doing on a PC?!) , Windows 10 is bloated and does too much meaningless busywork and "telemetry" (to who?!). The new machines we bought a few years ago had Windows 10 and Microsoft was still using the Smartphone tiles and the long application listing (which is still a smartphone UI and not as good as Windows 7's multiple drill-down windowed menu structure which had been just fine from Windows 95 onward. From the user's perspective Windows 10 is worse than Wndows 7. And Windows 11 simply won't run on our machines and Microsoft is getting too spyware-ish and trying to push a subscription model (we're cash poor -- like nearly everyone else right now, we can't buy much, so we focus on what we actually can't do without -- replacing perfectly good computers and buying access to the same local time-bombed program over and over again isn't in the budget). We also have two Windows Vista systems and a few Windows XP systems -- they all talk to each other on an isolated LAN with limited internet access through a filtering router (nothing from out there can communicate directly with any of the machines). We're not going to Windows 11 at all (even if they drop TPM2 as a requirement). What we do the older Microsoft software and systems actually work better than the newer versions, their software has actually gotten worse with each new version, so we just gave up even thinking about upgrades from MIcrosoft. We use LibreOffice and even have a few Microsoft Office 2003 (21 year-old) installations in active daily service. For what we do they work fine (and actually are better performing than the newer versions, even when the new versions are on faster machines). Also, we've gotten pretty good at maintaining older hardware and keeping older machines in very long extended service (thanks eBay for old equipment and parts.). We already have some Linux systems up, and they're essentially functionally equivalent to the Windows 7 and Windows 10 systems now, which for us is good enough.

As long as you practice standard internet safety practices such as not clicking on strange links, going to questionable sites, or keeping any passwords with something like the Google Password manager, you're fine using Win 7. The main thing you have to worry about, again if you're practicing standard safety practices, are actual bad actors with phishing emails and external hacking attempts on your network. A good, modern firewall will protect your machine. So long as your firewall is up to the task, bad actors shouldn't be able to get to your Win 7 machine. Sadly most people don't and thus why it's never recommended for the common, average user who doesn't have the knowledge to avoid those pitfalls.

Unless you have a specific device or program that needs windows, I’d put Linux Mint Cinnamon on this laptop. Mint is the easiest most trouble-free Linux distro out there, runs very similar to W7, and runs more efficiently than w7. You can then run Virtualbox on there for any Windows specific thing.
@johnf7683Ай бұрын
Virtualbox with 3 gigs of ram won't run very well. What you'd want to do with that laptop is see if it can be upgraded to 6 or 8 gigs of ram. If you check old discussion boards, you may find out that people have added more ram than is suggested (I found that out about mine). Also, I'd take off the back and dust the thing out, and possibly add thermal paste to the processor, as it's likely dried out. There should be plenty of videos on KZbin for that. Also, when you take out the screws, just place them on a piece of paper in the order you took them out...makes it easier to figure out which ones go where! I'm typing this on a 2008 X200 Thinkpad with MX Linux, 8 gigs of ram, SSD...and it runs great for browsing, word processing and old dos games (using Dosbox). I get to run the latest version of Chrome, OBS, etc, and it's much more secure (you can use free Clam for antivirus). For a new user, you can't beat Mint, though I might want to use XFCE on an under powered laptop, as it takes less resources than Cinnamon. You get less eye candy, but much better performance.

I have that laptop still laying around - You are completely right, it is a pain in the ass to open up - My SSD upgrade went in a very similar way to yours. For installing I always ended up making a DVD and installing Win 7 - I found even with maxed out RAM and an SSD fully up to date it runs like rubbish. I've recently pulled a Packard Bell EasyNote which I bought in 2007~ opened it up, took it apart, found there was no thermal paste on it anymore - Dual Core, max 2GB of RAM, installed Win 7 from a DVD and after some time, just like your experience, it finally installed - Then took AGES to update. More apps through the years are just gonna get simply harder and harder for 7 to be compatible, finding old versions are just gonna get unstable as years go by, more exploits are happening to make it easier for the OS to get viruses. If I wanna use it it’s either a retro PC that has 7 or just simply a VM, Windows 10 is probably the next best version to use, specifically Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 version, that has support until 2032 with no bloatware.

@TechSimplified910 Here's some info that has nothing to do with this video but I feel I need to share it because it's barely talked about. This is all about storage swapping and read and write. You already got a SSD but you probably would still wanna try this. The topic I'm talking about is Mklinks. Mklinks are better then normal windows shortcuts. Mklinks don't use storage space. They make a path to specific locations you pick. So for example, if you had an external hard and mklined a specific program. Your PC will think that separate hard drive is your main hard drive. Your PC will think it's one hard drive instead of 2 for that specific program you picked. What I'm doing since ram disk is 1 second faster than SSD. I'm making mklinks to ram disk. Example, you can't put a 100GB on a 2GB ram disk. It's just not possible. But since the rules go like this. (Mklinks don't consume storage space)(They make a path). This method is also good for video rendering. The program you need to do it very simple without writing scripts to do is called (Symlink Generator). You would make the ram disk first. Usually by default the ram disk drive would be Z and a folder in it called Temp. So if wanted to play a 100GB on a 2GB ram disk. You would manually open up that game folder, highlight the complete files, and drag the complete files inside Symlink Generator, the you tell the program you want all those files located on temp file in z drive. Your computer will think the whole 100GB game is on the 2GB ram disk and you will gain the speed from the ram disk instead of the normal SSD. This mklink thing is a gem nobody talks about. There's also a program in steam called Dimmdrive which basically works the same way. I bought that first because I had no clue about mklinks. Basically I got scammed because of the lack of knowledge. Symlink Generator and a ram disk is all you need to accomplish the same thing as Dimmdrive program. Mklinks are awesome, this is the best way to use a ram disk.
@100BucksАй бұрын
@TechSimplified910 I forgot to mention you can keep some files compressed to save on hard drive space with mklink. Example, leaving the file compressed without opening it at all. Just mklink the file you need from the compressed folder and you won't lose any storage. Good example is game roms for emulators. Leave them zipped and mklink them.

@rawmilk905Ай бұрын
For games, I slightly prefer 8.1 with Open-Shell installed, because 8.1 patches some bugs in 7 that impact some games, without introducing the changes that caused compatibility issues in 10 with some software from previous eras. You don't get quite as nice an aesthetic as in 7, in my opinion, but its functionally a bit better once you eliminate the unwanted changes to the interface.

No it's not possible to use Windows 7 now without any problems. Sure you can install it and it will work. The problem is that you won't find many software or web browsers that support Windows 7. As most software vendors dropped support for older versions of Windows. Google Chrome and Firefox only support Windows 10 now. Unless you install a very old version. Which is not advisable for browsing the Internet. When Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP and Vista I clung to them for as long as I could. Then I found I could get any more updates or even update my web browsers so I had to give them up. The same thing happened with Windows 7 and 8. So I changed to Linux because otherwise I would have had to upgrade to windows 10 or 11. Which I didn't want to do.
@vladdyloveswineАй бұрын
'Unless you install a very old version.' - latest firefox for win 7 literally released in july 2023. You are clearly don't know what you are talking about. This 'unsafe' browsing on unsupported system usually comes from a mouth of dummy users, whos catching viruses even on the latest Windows versions. I won't buy a new hardware just for Microsoft to claim it 'unsupported', even tho it's working fine. It's not about safety, it's about selling you stuff you don't need.
@s1_audsАй бұрын
that's why you use firefox ESR (extended support release)
@rawmilk905Ай бұрын
It depends on use case, if you keep an unsupported OS offline for the purpose of running old software, you can make use of it without incident, just use a supported OS for your online computing and avoid having any personal info on the unsupported OS, in case you should unintentionally connect to a network at some point. (Using a wifi dongle for the initial installation/update and then removing it instead of having any internal wifi hardware would be one approach to avoiding accidental connection.) I do agree that the way he is using it here will probably end up being more trouble than it is worth in the long run, attempting to use it for OBS and Spotify. A current Linux distro is going to be a much better daily driver.
@AndreaBormanАй бұрын
@s1_auds Yeah that's one option. I remember when I was on Windows XP after end of support. When I downloaded Firefox I got the ESR version. @Galax2000Ай бұрын
Especially modern laptops have hardware which were never updated on the standard non updated iso Microsoft provides. This makes it harder to install windows. Most common problem is the uns 3 Driver that the installer is missing or some SATA/name drivers that windows 7 simply not know

Just debloat win10 and disable telemetry lol. Its not hard to do and it takes like a few minutes to set up a machine with it. There's really no reason to run any operating system other than Linux or Win10, since a lot of software will not be compatible with older windows versions.
@wettuga2762Ай бұрын
Half a video to install Windows 7? The noobness in you is strong, young Padawan. Drop Google Chrome and use Supermium, it's a fork of Chrome with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8.x support. By the way, using an unsupported OS these days is not a big deal, specially because current routers basically block all ports anyway. As long as you use an updated browser and only visit trusted sites, you should be okay.

I installed Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB on a 2007/2008 desktop and it runs as fast as a modern computer. But I made some upgrades, like an Intel Core2Quad Q9550 processor, 4GB of DDR2 ram and an SSD. And without any video card, just the onboard video. And it runs smoothly If you have an old desktop computer like mine, try these upgrades. They should cost almost nothing.$$

Roblox still supports windows 7 but they will be dropping support in January. Minecraft also is not killing support in March lol.

For people that really want to avoid Win 10/11 take a look at Linux Mint, atm #1 of the Linux Distros for a reason. The look and feel is very similar to win7. I finally might make it my main system in 2025 after talking about moving to Linux for years. ;)
@miket.220Ай бұрын
I’ve been using Mint as my only OS on an upgraded 2012 Mac Mini for just over a year now, and I love it. Unless you have to sync an iDevice or something, it’s definitely the way to go.
@nora-beeАй бұрын
Mint is outstanding, I've waited years for a worthy successor to Windows 7 and I'm so happy to have found it! Lightweight, intuitive, has a great OOTB experience, I slummed it with Windows 10 after 7's EOL and this blows that out the water. Best part about Mint, you can theme it to look like 7 again if you want! Currently my desktop looks like default XP 🙂

i still use windows 7 on my laptop in 2024, only downfall is that my battery doesn't hold charge lol 😂 it's mad how we're coming up to the 20th anniversary.. 2009 - 2029 The reason as to why before I get replies telling me I shouldn't; I have programs such as vehicle software for example which needs the older version of windows and I have all my documents etc which I do refer to, in one place on windows 7. I don't want to go through the hassle of uploading everything to the cloud to redownload it all locally or putting it on USBs, when something works, I'll use it until it doesn't.
@TechSimplified910Ай бұрын
I completely agree with the old vehicle software. I’m the same exact way yeah it’s a mess to have to upload to the cloud.

@TechSimplified910 yeah exactly and for example programs like office 2016, works a charm I don't need the new office 2021 that literally only has new a UI appearance 😂 cheers for the reply

solution to battery not holding charge is to replace it... I've changed quite a number of w$7 laptops with battery problems... all batteries sourced from amazon... I've even installed linux mint 21.3 on one laptop...and modded it to have a sort of look and feel of w$7
