We occasionally get to work in some really interesting places. This hunting camp compound was one of those "top ten" places. It was shut down for the season and was a ghost town of sorts. There were all sorts of interesting fixtures, pieces of equipment, and old campers on this property. It was a strange and very secluded place which gave it a bit of a creepy feel.
Our customer had guests planning to come to stay at the camp the weekend we did this job. A week earlier he had traveled to the property to prepare the place for his guests. At that time, he found a honey bee infestation in the back wall of his camper. He, along with other members of the hunting club made every effort to exterminate these bees. After a week of what appeared to be a failed extermination, I was called to remove the bees.
When I arrived the road into the property was blocked by a locked cable which I drove around with my customer's permission. I was sorry I did later because on the way out I almost punctured a tire on a pine stob. I wanted my truck close by for several reason, one being safety and another being easy access to tools. I gained access to this camper with the use of a key hidden on the property and turned on the water and power to begin work. I made a quick inspection of the exterior to see where the bees were entering the RV. They had found a home through the pass-through hole for the power cord. In my quick initial inspection, I could tell that the club members had been successful in their extermination efforts although there were a few hundred bees left struggling to survive. I wish I'd spent more time figuring out exactly where the hive was located because as you'll see in the video, I cost myself extra work by breaking into the bottom of the vanity where I thought the power cord came in.
When I finally reached the hive, I found it to be a very large and honey loaded mess with a thick carpet of dead bees lying underneath of it. Due to the very tight access and the tedious cleanup work required on this job it took the equivalent of a full day's work to complete this job.
Prior to taking this job I had interviewed my customer by phone and had bid with what limited information he was able to supply. I under bid this job at $550 and then had to wait almost a month for payment. The location was about a three hour round trip for me and the hive was in a very difficult space to access. I thought for sure it would be under the vanity and at worst there would be a coiled-up power cord and maybe a couple of water lines to deal with. You just never know...
In the end I made a friend who has offered free hunting excursions a couple of times. I have yet to take him up on his offers due to my schedule, but I think I may be hanging out up there a few days in February.

I count myself as one of the luckiest people on earth! We had a cooling tower job south of Theodore one winter and I rented a camper on Dophin island to live in. Every morning and evening going to and coming from work was a fire show in the sky. There was the Dauphin island sea lab down there and one rain out day I went to tour it. Met an octopus there and we played peek-a-boo for a good while. I was the only tourist in there that day so I had a super tour by the man who fed the animals. He said that octopus was newly caught and explained they are really smart but that was the only time he'd seen one play like that. A couple years later a big hurricane came and washed 1/2 the island away. I count you as one of my blessings. Your videos are brilliant. You some how show and explain more of what bees do naturally in the wild. Seems as hobby bee keepers we should pay more attention to what the bees would rather do. I realize that if you have many hives the current style hives are probably most efficient

@5:00 You need some sort of monitor that the camera can connect to and display on for this situation (a set up that I'm sure would come in handy for plenty of other situations you may run into). Then you can see and reach at the same time. It doesn't have to be a big screen or anything fancy, just enough to give you 'eyes' into those tight spaces.

I don't know if it was the sound that it made when you were pulling it out or how it was dripping all over your hands and arms, I just can't figure it out. That was a hard to get to hive for sure. Would have been a lot of honey if...the shoulda coulda woulda hadn't happened. Why do people bother to spray pesticides on bee hives? Still got to remove it all...and it just makes it a nastier job IMO. Kinda gross under there anyways for good eating honey I would think. IDK? I coulda woulda left them so I could get me some honey! I sure miss being able to eat honey and other sweets etc... Liver issues so no carbs, treats, grains, etc...for me. My first thought when you said they colony was dying out was, "I bet they poisoned them what a shame." then watching you pull out 80+pounds of honey made me sad and then you confirmed it was poisoned (or one of the people mentioned it)... People need to stop poisoning bees, it rarely works for long anyways because another colony will move in later...

Yep, sprayed. Just makes the removal messier with piles of dead bees under the combs.

Where I live I think it’s a crime to spray honeybees, you are required to call a beekeeper to remove them. This should be a law everywhere.

I could be rendered and used as tool wax or something like that but it's no longer any good for anything to do with beekeeping.

How could a guy be so lucky as having a good brother that wants to help out. I’ve not seen many families that help each other out. That camper looks a lot like one we had. We had to clean the mice turds out of our kitchen sink, drawers and the oven. What a mess they made. No near as messy as what you guys have to clean out. Yuk
