Sites need to get a reality check regarding the site fees. They are all getting greedy too greedy

Again people not understanding it’s not an investment in a van it’s an investment in year round memories. No different to purchasing a car, it goes down in value. How much does the average family spend in 10 years on their two week holiday abroad?, 50k plus ? That’s for one holiday a year not the 20 plus breaks you get with your own van, work it out. Purchase the right van at the right price and depreciation is 2k a year, site fees just over 3k. 5k for all year round holidays.

We looked in Cornwall for a van until we looked into everything, new van from £50k (from) site fees plus services etc 8k and over 10 yrs of running its £130 k to be told that when van reaches 16yrs the van is to old for the site so it was a definite NO

Don't blame you! It really adds up, doesn't it?! 16 years doesn't seem long at all.

You could be close to £100,000 over ten yrs for a decent van plus running costs, £100,000 think about that.

Oh gosh it doesn't sound worth it at all!

Again this figure is misleading and not helpful. The yearly running costs are dependant on the site and site rules. There are many sites that don’t have an age limit and still have vans on them from the late 1980s. Even with those that do the yearly site fees along with Van depreciation is just over 5k for the full year with unlimited use if you balance out what you pay for the van and the years it has left before it hits 20 years. Yes you can pay over 100k for a van, the vast majority of owners don’t, exactly the same way you can purchase a Ford Fiesta or a BMW, personal choice. 5k is equivalent to one two weeks family holiday abroad. On top of that you have insurance which is generally lower than insuring your car, it’s also good practice to have a gas safety check even if not letting it out. The gas and electric you use in the van, you don’t use at home, the food you eat, you are not eating at home. We used to go for a two weeks cruise every year, we now have year round holidays for less.

We sold our van to the site owners last December it was a 38x12 3 bedrooms on suite it was better than some of these caravans central heating beautifull position with grand views over acres of country side it was 12 years old. The site owners only gave us £2500 for it site fees with virtually no amenities was £5200. So don't buy a static unless you want to say goodbye to your money, you might as well put your money in a big pile and set fire to it. Either way you will finish up with nothing.

A complete financial liability. Purchase cost + site fees + bills on a depreciating unit that has a finite life-span. Keep away!
