I bought an ML1 for £200.00 a few years ago. Put in a Thornbucker, 2 Suhr V60 pickups and locking tuners. Turned it into a pseudo Suhr! Brilliant guitar that I take to all my gigs. Such fun. Thanks Rob 🤘🏻🎸👍🤘🏻🎸👍

I would have kept the red chicken knob! In fact, if I win, I will install it on my guitar in your honor and send you a pic to enjoy what could have been, lol. I've also never installed pickups before, so having those would be a cool treat to learn with. But let's be real, I'm here for the red chicken knob -- I think it's pretty sweet too! ❤️🐔🎸😬🤘🏻

Pretty cool! I own one of the 2013 ml 1 production models (HSS). Really must say: The single coils in neck and middle are spot on! I didn't agree that much with the stock bridge pu, so I changed that one for a Duncan 59. Apart from that I love stratty sounds (eg the 2 and 4 position on a traditional strat) but the ml 1 only has a 3 way toggle switch. And also I'm not really for push/pull switches. I can't reliably reach those on stage during a show. So what I did was decouple the tone knob and turn it into a second volume for the middle pickup. I used a logarithmic pot, so I can back it off to just under 80 percent and when I want it I can just roll it in, much like a switch. Hence, I can always blend in the middle pickup and it will do some marvelous phase cancellation.

This is so so cool man! If it were me modifying that guitar... Let's see. I'd get the runes from the original trem block for this guitar (the Catalyst ones, I am open and receptive to all that's good), template them and make them into fretboard inlays! So each rune goes where a dot would go. I'd swap those wonderful Grover's for some lovely chrome Hipshot Locking Open Gear tuners and as you've done, replace the nut. Pickups and electronics, you've done as I would do, but I would go for a woodgrain Silo in the bridge and black Fender Texas Specials in the middle and neck position. Although, I feel like setting the trem up on this one would have been fantastic! The Wilkinson tremolo system is great on these guitars. Plus, having a trem would be more fun with a single coil sized Sustainiac pickup I'd pop in instead of the regular neck single coil you've installed here. A Tremol-no unit in the back also wouldn't go amiss. Strap locks would go on aswell. After a fret dress and polish, you'd end up with a guitar that has more options to give it's voice more breadth. Combining the sustainer and the tremolo lets you do some insane sounds and it would feed back like a dream with that fully unchambered mahogany body. But that's just me man, what you've done fits with you and I'm so so glad that the original Chapman guitar has had done to it its intention after 11 years. Super happy for you bro, keep rocking 🔥🤘

Rob, this Richard from California, the bearded one. we hung out at NAMM when you were showing the new Chapman guitars. I would have put a dimarzio supper 3 in the bridge, I have one in my hm strat from the 90s and it is the best tone i have heard in a humbucker. As for single coils, I have always loved the original fender lace sensors. blue at the neck and a gold at the middle. For hardware, Gold with brass saddles and locking neck tuners. As for the nob, I would go with what you did. Looks great. I would call it "Gold One" take care...

I would route a hole through the body, behind the bridge, the size of a soda can and make a miniature bonsai tree, make a clear resin cylinder with the tree in it, the same size as the hole, fit it in the hole, put LED in it and install a kill switch with a LED circle on it and wire it so when it's not pressed - the button is lighted. And when i press it, the tree glows. And for the knob, I would go with the smallest engine piston (a bike piston probably) and try to figure out how to insyall it. The piston has a slot to put a rubber band on it for grip. Also would carve something on the back and fill the carving with glow in the dark pigments, just for me to see. The parts you pretty much nailed it. Cheers

I would have used the golden elephant as the volume control. A matching gold bridge and locking tuners to finish off the bling. The guitar would then be named "Ganesha's Emperor - The Golden Tusk", as would be indicated by an inscribed tablet on the back of the guitar in place of the cavity covers.

I would get the body carved with some personally appealing motif, maybe inspired by one of my tats or something Maltese. Scallop the frets from the 12th down. Large carved wooden knob that matches the body carvings. Burn the top then sand back and lacquer so you have light and dark contrast in the carvings. One of a kind will jump out at anyone who sees it, no question.

I would've sanded down what's left of the stain, sprayed it neon yellow, dip swirled it with green, pink and black paint. Installed a hot pink Dimarzio tone zone, a hot pink true in the middle, and a hot pink sustainer pickup in the neck. I'd have gone with neon green knobs. Locking machineheads on the headstock, roller trees and a graph tech nut. Switchcraft output jack, fender 250k/500k stacked volume pot with treble bleeds mod, 250k tone pot with an orange drop capacitor. Basically a combination of a few of the guitars I've built myself, mixed with my Jem. That wiring loom would be killer for a build I'm doing soon 🤘

Looks bloody lovely in an understated but classy way. From that short clip of you playing with the higher gain, the pickups sound balanced with strong but sweet overtones. Literally singing. What I would have done differently would have been: consider engineering a truss rod cover of the same material as the bobbins, changed the switch type killswitch for a button for those Buckethead chops and finally considered a Graphtech nut because ethical reasons. If considering the bone nut, maybe get a bone with dark/marbled markings. Love and peace.

If I were to upgrade/add to that guitar is: 1. I would put the same wiring as the Fender Player Plus where you can add the neck pickup on position 1 and 2, 2. would be a 2-point trim with brass saddles, brass block, and brass spring claws...not to mention a push-on trem bar... basically a Gotoh 510 set or the ones in Musiclily. 3. Most people forget that tones come out with the strings as well, so I suggest putting light gauge Ernie Ball strings on them. 4. Lastly would be just an option, a medium tall stainless steel frets and brass tuning heads for additional aesthetics since there is too much black on the guitar.

I’d go for a Fernandes sustainer set & run an RC car motor off the 9v to see if you could get some magnetic oscillation interference in the magnetic pickup field. Instead of a regular killswitch, I’d put in an in/out of phase toggle switch to turn pickup phasing tones on & off, but also keep a killswitch style button next to it to stutter between the two settings. No tone knob, optical photocell by the neck pickup, so you have to bring your hand over the neck pickup to roll back the tone, which could also effectively give you an onboard wah effect by strumming over the different pickups. Yeah, have fun with what my brain keeps me up at night thinking about ;)

Nice guitar Rob! I would have stripped it from al the paint and would use a blowtorch te burn the wood to make it black, but super sturdy (it's an old japanese techniek called Shou Sugi Ban). Then use some finish oil to make it shiny, beautiful and playable. And then to complete the proces, maybe make a new nut out of chopsticks? 😂

Definitely would have done something like with that brown knob, but all the way around. I’ll take my bits now, Rob. :)

I would wire in extra jacks that would each plug into a separate channel to create a warm humbucker sound with edgier higher pitched sounds. Could potentially put a slight delay to create dissident sound. Potentially put though the same amp to create a blended sound.

Would've totally blinged it up with gold hardware (including the golden elephant 😏), drawn an elephant head with the infinity sign as the eyes in the fretboard, dropped a gold Vega trem bridge in it to make elephant noises with dive bombs and put on a black sock at the end of the headstock to make it look like a trunk. You know, for good measure. Have fun Rob!

Hi Chappers I also have an original ML1 from the first run of 500 and i put the pick ups from Bea's baritone in the bridge and the neck. I would have added a kill push button. For the nut, instead of bone nut, gone with a graphtec, with graphtec trees. I'd also have thrown in some FUTone springs for the bridge, & added one of their hi sustain blocks (they're ridiculous). For pickups, I'd have added a sustaniac in the neck controlled on a push-pull instead of coil tapping.

It looks amazing. For that style of playing it's pretty perfect. If I had the money, I'd get graphtech ratio locking tuners, a tusq nut, Tusq string trees, stainless steel frets, A @sahanaguitars RP17 humbucker and two RP17 vintage single coils, a volume, tone, one three way which would be in bridge in position one, middle position would be bridge and neck, position three would be neck. Then add a second three way switch which would control the middle pickup. Position one would be without the middle pickup, middle position would bring in the middle pickup to whatever selection you have the first three way selector in and the third position would control just the middle pickup and cancel out the first three way switch altogether. I would get Bourns pots, switchcraft switches and jacks, possible change the bridge to a hipshot tremolo.

Hm, wha' would'ave I ever done? Propably explored more possibilities with SD Duckbuckers on neck and middle. Maybe a JB on the bridge with maximum splittage. Slapped an "Everything axe" - (mini JB, a lil' '59 and Duckbucker) to my old Squier Strat, and daymn does that thing rock the hell out now! Duckbucker in particular is a really cool and unique tone for neck, I absolutely love it! Or, instead of that would maybe gotten SD P-rails with Triple Shots for neck and bridge, and somehow fitted something "texas special" -styled middle single coil in there. This would of course need some routing. Or! Or! FIltetrons! with some wacky middle pickup to complete the set! Oh, ef yea filtetrons! Maybe chamber the upper horn while at it!

I would of had a passive circuit with a kill switch installed. Then the hss format I would of likely gone for dimarzios since they have that high output but also manage heavy distorted tones well. Interms of aesthetic it might of been good to lazer etch the top... maybe get a demon circle drawn or the illuminati symbol on the lower center below the bridge. Knob wise I'd of chosen one of the hipshot ones as they have that rubber grip. Graphtech String tree, with graphtech saddles. Then still would of kept the bone nut as think that looks amazing. One other thing that might be cool is aluminium or anodized metal backplates... probably would of installed one of the Jackson Allen key holders too on the back of the headstock so you can always alter saddle action or truss rod on the go.

The nut I'd likely left alone UNLESS I slapped some .013s on it for drop tuning. Then the nut would have to be replaced with graphite. The bridge I'd replace with a Babicz, but I'd keep the black chrome look. I likely would replace the tuners with locking Kluzons, also black chrome. I agree with shielding, but I might have used the paint rather than the foil. HSS pickups offer such a wide range of ideas. For the sake of voicing the neck would have to be a Bareknuckle Trilogy Suite. The middle would be a Danelctro lipstick, and the bridge would be the neck humbucker from a Bareknuckle Polymath set. The 5-way switch would reverse the wiring for the neck and middle. That way the neck and bridge will work together. And I'd put a 3-way toggle for the Polymath to use one or the other coil by itself as well as the humbucker. The master volume would have a Treble bleed. I'm not sure if I'd use 250K or 500k pots, but I would use a 22microfarad capacitor for the tone knob. The knobs would have to be knurled black chrome. Better grip.

I just modified a guitar similar to this ML-1 so I guess I would have done that! I started with a really cheap and awful strat copy (coz it’s all I can afford), got a blank pickguard, routed the pickguard for four pickups, four on/off switches and a volume knob. Meaning I had a Strat single coil in the neck, P90 in the middle, strat single coil in the other middle and mini humbucker in the bridge. Then I replaced the nut and tuners. Turned a $40 terrible strat copy into a versatile and fun beast!

Fishmann Fluence HB in the bridge and a Fishmann single coil in the middle - not sure exactly which set though. Then a Joe Satriani style Sustainiac in the neck position. First thing i would have converted it to left handed. but the possibilities are endless i may put a wilkinson vs-100 lefty tremolo on it with sperzel locking tuners, add a five way switch, turn the 3 way pickup selector switch into 2nd tone and either put dimarzio super 3 (Bridge) and 2 fast track 2 in neck and middle then coil split all three and hook the 1st tone to neck only and the new 2nd tone to middle pickup only. or i may had some bare knuckles or David allen pickups to it. i would have sweetwater to plek the neck, put on stainless steel frets, control cavity shielding, maybe instead of a wilkinson vs-100 i may put a FU-Tone modded Left handed Original Floyd Rose tremolo with locking nut and still put on sperzel locking tuners for extra tuning stability, maybe do some woodburned graphics like of you, dave ,ben and rebea since it was discovering dorje that basically got me into chapman guitars. maybe with a image of captain lee anderton as well on it. maybe some inlay work like either monkey lord or rob chapman spelled out as inlay. Normal large strap buttons, i am not the person who needs the strap locks because i don't do the silly jumping around and slinging guitars due to i am left handed, we have to take care of our instruments cause we don't get many choices plus our versions usually are way more expensive. I would also add the pickup mounting system FU-Tone has. and for the control cover and the cover for the cavity of the bridge springs, i would use velcro and probably install some sot of tremolok system as well. that is a few idea's i have for it.

Love this, I would have cut a monkey grip but on the lower side of the body just to confuse people and I think a nice golden elephant sticker would be lovely behind the bridge.

I would’ve routed out an original floyd rose with Seymour Duncan hot rails in the neck and middle and a Seymour Duncan hot rodded set bridge humbucker. Maybe colour it with a dark cherry burst and matching headstock. You’re welcome 😁

I’d have taken a jigsaw to the body behind the trem and made it into a Reb Beach Ibanez shape. Painted it black with pink spots like Randy Rhoads’ spotty V (sounds painful). There you have it a Randy Beach.

Greeeeeetings!!!... The only thing I would have done different on the controls would have been... yes, use the RED Chicken Head, but as a 5 way rotary for the "other" sounds like the 5 way of a strat using the "tapped" out from the bridge, and the chrome toggle would be a BLASTER switch to bridge humbucker. Clean... DIRTY... Clean... DIRTY. ☮💗🎶

I would've changed out the bridge for a supervee blade runner. Then I'd throw in the EMG afterburner boost circuit. Other than that I think your mods are spot on! Thanks for bringing the shred \m/ and inspiring guitar players around the world!

I would add separate volume knobs for each coil of the humbucker. So you can blend in coils separately for infinite voice options.

I would have sanded the back of the neck and the body as deep as possible. Turn it into a paper sheet thick guitar and fly with it! I'm currently working on a "super-tele" (like a telecaster version of a super-strat) project and I'm designing a whole new circuit to include both an octaver and a fuzz inside the control cabity. What about that? If anyone like these ideas please don't hesitate to steal them Thanks Rob for all these years of guitar fun. Greetings to all

Nice, man. I would go crazy and put a sustainiac and a floyd. But if I were you, since the guitar is named after your Monkey Lord nickname, I would carve a Steve Vai monkey grip and paint it with the same black colour you see on the side of the guitar's body. If I could get a black floyd as well, the guitar would be stunning.

That wasn't the FIRST EVER Chapman! The first one was labeled Gould on the headstock with a different font for Chapman. But personally, I think if I was modifying the first ML1, I'd put the black scratch plate on that came included, change the knobs to PRS lampshades, get some white pups in there too. I'd add luminlay on the side dots. Brass nut. 11-52s in standard E, and call it a day.

Tell you what I’d do. Id get a bean. A Heinz baked bean and I’d cast it in resin. I’d then shape it into a smooth nob shape and fit it to the guitar. That’s a lot of steps. But how could you consider a guitar journey complete without the blessing of a single bean x
