But then Nina decided to leave the show, so the producers didn't have time to develop the whole plot line Elena-falls-in-love-with-Stefan-again so they had to go with plan B.

To be fair, this book is #5 of the series, so majority of the people who are reading it, presumably liked the first 4 books so they’re going to rate book 5 accordingly. This is true for any series, the sequels are mostly read by people who enjoyed the first few books and therefore will be biased as they’re the target audience. Another thing to keep in mind, that books like Crave are mostly picked up to read by people who are interested in the tropes. Someone who’s not interested in paranormal young adult urban fantasy isn’t going to pick Crave as a book to read. So the readers are comparing it to other books of similar genre that they normally enjoy. On the other hand, classics like The Picture of Dorian Gray are often assigned to be read by people who don’t even like the genre, so they’re not going to like the book and the rating will be more representative of general population’s opinion vs niche target audience opinion. So while in the general population, more people will likely like the picture of Dorian gray, from the people who were going to read Charm, the majority of them was going to like it as the target audience is so specific and not representative of general population.
