Funny thing: Maggie actually wrote Dream thieves first, then realised there was too little "crew" in all that Ronan, so she wrote The Raven Boys to give everybody else more of a background and stuff.

Maggie didn’t write The Dream Thieves specifically first she was creating a story around a character who took things from dreams, his name was Sean & I think she borrowed parts of that for TRC & the dreamer trilogy & the main plot actually went to The Dreamer Trilogy.

I truly think (as someone who rereads these books once a year) that they get better the more you've read them. Like the first time is to get a gist of who these people are and then coming back it's like meeting your best friends you haven't seen in a while, just having a good time - enjoying their company as you will. These books are not about the story, they're a warm embrace of loved ones

Another tidbit about the Raven Cycle that puts some of the pacing into perspective is that it was initially meant to be a five book series, with the fourth book ending with Gansey's death and the fifth book entirely concerned with getting him back and tying up other loose ends. Maggie's illness and publishing pressure/concerns over how a five book series would sell (I guess?) turned five books into four. I too was not super excited about the way the fourth book ended but learning that made it make a little more sense. There is a second series centering Ronan and dreaming called the Dreamer Trilogy that does explore and answer a few of the dangling questions from the Raven Cycle.

One of my favorite things about this series is just how much of the future plot is straight up told to you within the first like 50% of the first book but you don't notice because your attention is being diverted to something else. And then on subsequent rereads, when you realize what "I've been dead for seven years", "that's all there is" "three three times in three different handwritings", "where did you find that bird? in my head" etc. etc. mean, you really feel that sensation of time slipping and being circular that the characters are experiencing as well. Such a good example of foreshadowing and writing style complementing the content and I can't shut up about it lol

I read this series not so longo ago, but I can't remember much of it. One of the only things I remember clearly was how I'de cry like a baby every time Noah would show up, cause he's just the most precious thing ever and his fate will always make me sad. I know his death was the major point of everything, but I really couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted cause he was my fave character, and I got so pissed at the author for killing him that for a long time I refused the read the rest of the series wishing that I would forget about his death and read it thinking that he was alive all along

imo these books could've been waaayyy more popular if the marketing was different. i distinctly remember being like 14 and scoffing when i first read the synopsis (the one on my physical edition of the book, which is very different to the one you read in the vid) because it made it seem like the whole book was about blue being unable to kiss her true love when really that is a tiny part. also the covers are a hatecrime jesus christ. but then i gave it a go anyway and!! to this day!! i am still fuckd up over these silly little teenagers and their dead welsh king. but yeah i just really wish publishers would stop acting like all teen girls want to read about is true love and cool hot bad boys because these characters are idiots actually and none of them are cool but they have shaped my entire adolescence anyway. and these books so perfectly capture what being a teenager in a small town feels like. and the synopsis very nearly prevented me from experiencing that so go die raven boys marketing team

I was so nervous to watch this video but I loved it. I highly recommend the Dreamer Trilogy - the sequel series to the Raven Cycle (and even wonder if you'd like it more). It follows the Lynch family and a series of other wonderful characters and dives deeper into the dreaming! Its definitely a different tone and vibe compared to the Raven Cycle and much more action packed and fast paced but I love it so much too! Maggie Stiefvater has been my favorite author since I was a kid and my mom recommended this series and the Scorpio Races to me! She writes books that are technically YA but can be amazing reading experiences for pretty much any age group. She herself doesn’t love the age-based genres her books are grouped into and I totally agree with her. I’ve reread the books maybe every 3 years and I’ve gotten something new from them every time.

I always randomly imagined Gansey as Harry Styles- i dunno why, and like Adam as Louis Tomlinson. And that made me ship them subtlety. I read these books when i was young and i didn't understand it properly, I've always wanted to go back and understand them better. But the Shiver series by Maggie is still my absolute baby

I finished the raven king today. Like an hour ago. I am with you on the ending. I think I'm just bummed it's over. I need to see the "after". It's alluded to Adam and Ronan together, I want to see the Gansey, Blue, Henry adventures. I just want more from this world!

I just have to say, I love the song you play in the intro--you used it in a past video and when I heard it then it immediately went into my liked songs and is always in my current favs playlist on spotify so thank you for the good music on top of the great book reviews ❤

I dropped the first book after just a few chapters because the writing sounded like it's for childrens book tbh like the way the author repeats the character's name so many times in a single paragraph, I just couldn't handle that so I had to DNF it

Ahh it is so much nicer hearing others go through this series because I tried the audiobook version was too long ago and couldn't stand the combo of weird pacing and not enjoying narrator, but it's nice to finally hear what happened! Any chance you'll go through other works by this author? Because all of her works are insane and wonderous and for me at least the others were even better!

i just finished the raven king ( yay!) and i feel similarly about the ranking you gave the series. dream thieves i think is probably at the bottom for me because i just didn't love any of the scenes with kavinsky and felt frustrated with adam ( whom i love now). I really enjoyed Maggies writing but i think the best part of the books is just the characters & the descriptions of cabes water + anything happening at 300 fox way. the plot was going straight over my head at some points lolol. the only thing that made me tear up was the epilogue when adam confronts his parents🥲 also yes to rereading things later! I tried to read inheritance games right after reading six of crows & crooked kingdom and it fell so short to me but then i gave it another go a few months later and loved it!

Oh for that app: make rustling windy leaves with crows crowing in the background. That will forever be my happy place. Sound of my grandmother's place❤, but the crows need to be in deep conversation in the park by the river down the road, yet so loud, that no other sound can rival their dominance. Happy birds make me anxious. I like dramatic crows screaming from treetop to treetop and flying across the sky surveying their domain.

I also read the first book a few years ago and it didn't super catch me. I think the book(s by the sound of it) are very character focused and want you to be really interested in/compelled by boys. And for me the boys came off not quite charming enough I think. I think it hit me in that spot, like if I see people raving over something and I don't have the same experience I can kind of be put off. Except in this case it was the impression I got from the writing itself that slightly put me off. I enjoyed the book but was like 'eh' about continuing the series. But I think I'll give it a reread.
