I Converted My Mountain Bike Into a BMX Cruiser Hybrid Mountain Bike!

I Converted a mountain bike into a BMX Cruiser Hybrid Bike for our upcoming Allegheny Passage / C&O Canal trip from Pittsburgh PA to Washington DC. I like the feel and geometry and comfort of the older BMX bikes so decided to add some H bars and give a mountain bike the feel of a BMX Cruiser.

Bmx handlebars/neck. Laid back seat post. 24 inch mountain bike 21 speed/shocks front and back. Perfect dad bike to tow 2 kids on a trailer, still have some slick tricks to pull at the park.

@@DansEverythingOutdoors an idea I've had rolling around in my head is getting lucky enough to score a steel frame 26 inch and cut top bar and and lower bar, weld em up to a 24 frame to get my 21 speed 24 inch on bmx handlebars with 20 to 21 inch top bar. Maybe even a small amount of rake on head tube just for an 80s baby long and low look.

@@laststarfighter5335 I think a 21 or 22 inch top bar would be perfect depending on how tall you are. 20 may be too short but I bet it would look RAD! If you do it, I would love to see pictures.

I did this two years ago. It was an awesome lil ride. I’m about to do it again with a mongoose I just found. With street tires and pegs.

would be great to see some videos if you could! i love these kind of conversions if you could call it that. i’m young but being taller (6’2) i don’t see how normal mountain bike bars are comfortable for anybody

Steve. I used a GT Front load Stem and Carbon Fiber Headset spacer. I just added the link in the description for everyone

I have a trek 4300 want to do the same thing with bars..do you know if the bars you have will fit

That would probably work pretty well. Personally I think the Trek 4900 is almost the perfect geometry for doing this. I am not as familiar with the 4300. It may be the same just without disc brakes

Did you have to change the brake cables and gear cables to be able to reach because the handlebars are so high

If 22.2 mm was not the issue, would you still use BMX stem? I am thinking of buying a BMX handlebar for my MTB as well and the one I'll buy has 31.8 mm diameter. Do I still need a BMX stem for safety?

No, you can use a normal mtb stem. BMX bars typically are 22.2 7/8 is the only reason you would need a bmx stem. Ive not heard of too many people breaking a normal mtb stem on a bike at places like Whistler etc where you easily get 10-12 feet of air at times.

Thank so much. My son stole it so I turned a GT Aggressor Pro into onw for myself. Still looking for the perfect frame to build another. I think a Trek old style bike with a 21 inch top tube would be perfect.
