Many still are giving. I know a few and ALL of them have had to become unpaid childminders for their grandchildren. Childcare is so expensive that if grandparents didn't help out, both parents could not work. That would be one less taxable income for the Treasury and probably one more family claiming universal credit or rent/council tax rebates. There are others in my town who I don't personally know, but who I see working in the charity shops, running social clubs for others, helping out at food banks and belonging to local 'helping hands' groups - i.e. groups who offer to do minor DIY, mow lawns, give lifts, pick up prescrptions etc, for those who need the help. They may not be in paid employment but I genuinely feel that if all of those I've mentioned above went on strike, the government would realise just how much they're still contributing to society, and all voluntarily.
