I run a company that delivers computing solutions for Architect and Medical firms. This right here would be really freaking neat to offer as a "add-on" to the service, currently there's only a few clients that has actually deployed/tried VR headsets, the only issue is the fact that they need all those cables and tracking and also the fact that it's basically limited to one person is kinda useless for them. This kind of display would let a team get a better view, even if it's just 2-5 people (25-10% angle). so far the biggest breakthrough in computing IMO is Intel DCPMM, CPU's and GPU's have kinda stagnated, Networking is also not that important nowdays given that you can either have large storage anywhere and blazing network.... now looking at the data? that's actually something else, today there's only one option, look at it in 1080 or 4k it's still one dimension, VR is great, but you have to deal with "VR". This thing combined with DCPMM is making me giggle like a kid again.

True. they look amazing even on camera so I can't even imagine how good it looks for real.
@Dayanto4 жыл бұрын
Sort of, but not really. They aren't showing off the flaws either. Since it only has horizontal parallax, the image doesn't have perspective-correct 6 dof. If you look at it from the wrong distance or angle (vertically), it can look a bit weird. (compressed depth and multiple types of warping) It's not like a volumetric display which you can look at from any perspective, but it does have view-dependent lighting effects, which volumetric displays don't. (shiny stuff, the magnifier etc.) If you want both, you need a proper light field display, which is similar to this except with two dimensions of parallax. That requires a lot more computing power, but is also more impressive.
@captaincarrot89284 жыл бұрын

I've worked on a test project 6 years ago and the screen was only capable of showing 8 different views, so I guess in a few years this is what video meetings are going to look like. Also one application we worked on that screen, because you could have 8 views, was to allow 2 players of one game (say, Mario kart) to play on the same screen but seeing different things - yet both in stereoscopic mode. This is tech is very fun to play with and I encourage anyone to see it at least once :)

I bumped into some early development of these things in the middle of 2019, and can confirm, 10/10, would recommend. There's a little fringing on some parts of the image when it gets really close or really far outside of the display's ideal range, but it made me instantly want one, and seriously consider buying a 4k version. Maybe now that I know they have an 8K, I should just save for that, even if it's in the $10,000 range.

@doktormcnasty4 жыл бұрын
I think slices/thickness would be the new dpi. The new resolution will be increased number of slices. Base resolution now is 45 slices but HD-Holo would be 90, for example. How thick those 90 slices are on one unit compared to the other - or 'slices/thickness' would be same as your dpi is now.
