My favorite five baits: 1/2 ounce War Eagle blue glimmer spinner bait, 3/8 black Lunker Lure buzz bait, 5" green pumpkin stick bait like a General or Ocho, Zoom watermelon red trick worm, Bandit 200 white spatter back crankbait.

The Kankakee and lower Fox Rivers are some of the best Smallmouth fisheries in Illinois. Second only to Lake Michigan.

I completely agree with the wacky rigged worm and the top water walking baits. I grew up outside Chicago as well and fished in many of the same waters you did/do in Northern Illinois and Wisconsin in the late Spring to early Fall months. I use to catch fish on jigs in that area but here in Florida, they don’t work as well. My top five baits would have to be Texas rigged senkos (generally weightless), wacky rigged senkos on a 1/16 oz wacky rigged hook, jerkbaits (my top bait use to be the vision 110 and 110 Jr but lately the Shimano World Minnow and especially the Zumverno have been better), TRD ned crawz or ned worm or the Yamamoto ned worm or D Shad neko rigged, and then a drop shot (roboworm or Kalin's jerk minnow Jr). I catch them on devilshorses, frogs, square bills, lipless crankbaits and Mister Twister jigs but the others are my top 5 😉

I need to add the swim jig to my arsenal in 2024. Love to get your thoughts on when and where to throw swim jigs. I've always thought of it as a largemouth bait in weeds / grass, but maybe not ??? And I had so much fun fishing a walking bait this fall, that I actually was hooked about having one of those tied on more often throughout the year. What an absolute fun bite that catches really big fish.

Those plus Texas/shaky, Neko, and frogs, but the old spinnerbait is the go to. Favorite has become the Berkeley 3/16 Power Blade with an upgraded Picasso skirt and various trailers. Wake it, slow roll, drop it into or at the edge of weed lines. Even had pretty good luck dragging it over/through milfoil other vegetation with the right wind. Super versatile and love seeing those strikes on a chartreuse/white. Going to have to order some Ozark rigs this winter!

hey Matt, what a tough question because it depends on where I’m fishing. Lol if I had to choose five it would probably be LC gunfish, pearl fluke, dropshot, 2.8 swimbait, and finesse jig.

I think I'd replace the swim jig with a spinnerbait but agree with the rest. My first jig fish was basically the same story lol 4lber and I was hooked. It's still weird to me that there's a different between the jig bite and Texas rig bite. It's basically the same thing but the jig bite is so addictive

Theres no way for me to narrow it down to 5 specific baits it would have to be techniques for me and theyd be fishing a jig in all its forms, same with topwater, throwing spinnerbaits, cranking, and dragging around a Carolina rig... I've caught so many fish on all of those techniques along with a few double digit bass on a few of those techniques. Luxury of growing up in the SW Louisiana/E Texas area we have some phenomenal big fish lakes really close by. Great video as always keepem coming man!!

I still don't get the whole jig "thing". Been trying to crack that nut my entire life, and can't figure it out. Although, I've never really "dedicated" myself to learning it either. I've been able to produce with just about every bait, and setup out there. But, for some reason, jigs hate me. And, I've got tons of them with the hopes that one of them would work at some point. *I'd LOVE to see a video dedicated to that topic alone.* To answer your question.... Wacky-rigged senko, spinner bait, jerkbait, rattle-trap, frog or spook.....and for those REALLY tough days, a weedless brick of watermelon red, military grade, C4 (with a #2 trailer hook, of course).👍
