Copland's musical style is probably one of the key building blocks of Hollywood film music. First we need to remember he was a close friend and composing mentor to Leonard Bernstein (so you can hear Copland influence in a lot of Bernstein's compositions - with his many musical theatre works being a big inspiration for later film composers). So Copland's first influence on film music is indirect, through Bernstein's work (we have to remember that Copland's music has had a long and uphill journey towards the recognition it deserves, so early on not many people, even composers, were directly familiar with his music). Secondly, there are champions of Copland among film composers - people who are very much aware of his work and find ways of paying homage to him in their scores: most notably Thomas Newman ("The Shawshank Redemption", "American Beauty", "The Green Mile", "Road to Perdition") and John Williams (although it's not the most prominent influence in his most popular blockbuster scores like Star Wars and Indiana Jones, you can still hear Copland in Williams' brass voicing, or some of the more intimate harmonies; but then there are films like "Saving Private Ryan", "Presumed Innocent", "JFK" or "Born on the Fourth of July" - scores that may well have been written (or at least heavily contributed to) by Copland himself). Basically whenever a film requires an Americana flavour, the first and most obvious choice for the composer is "ah, the Copland brass" (if it's a military film/scene) / "ah, the Copland woodwinds" (if it's an idyllic picture of American countryside) / "ah, the Copland trumpet solo" (this one's rather versatile ^^).

Glad you enjoyed your introduction to Copland! He's often thought of as the most "American-sounding" of American composers. He drew a lot of inspiration from American folk music, and to me his orchestration often brings up the image of wide open American landscapes. Copland's best known pieces are probably three of his ballets: Appalachian Spring, Rodeo, and Billy the Kid. His clarinet concerto is one of the most popular in the repertoire. In this symphony, Copland quoted another of his most famous pieces. The main theme of the fourth movement is taken directly from his Fanfare for the Common Man, which he had composed several years earlier.

So the "Big Horns" are actually the trombones and tuba! The trombones being the instruments with those long pipes they move back and forth, and the tuba being the large round one. And the "mini flutes" are called piccolos :)

Violist here! Love your videos man! It’s pronounced VEE-OH-LA and it has a completely unique and special sound when compared to other string instruments. It’s a 5th lower than the violin and more mellow. If you were to describe them both in more abstract terms or in “feelings” then the violin would be more snappy, bright or optimistic. You could describe the viola as more melancholy, reminiscent or soulful. I think it would be really cool if you were to react to some viola sonatas or concerti on your channel. I would suggest that you listen to the Brahms sonatas! Again, I love your videos! Keep on doing what you’re doing!

When you do Mahler 7 I recommend the same conductor and orchestra. I think it’s fun to be able to see all the instruments playing because then you can pick upp smaller details. Thank you for the videos!

For another American composer I recommend George Antheil. Listen to his Symphony 6 conducted by Hugo Wolff.
