I dispute that we didn't know what we were watching. I certainly did. The fact that she still effects me the same way today is a testament to her enormous gift. While I love most of the old classics, very few effect me the same as they did when I first heard them. Janis is the exception.

You did NOT overreact! She is one of one. She’s raw, authentic, soulful, and all around greatness. I’m just glad to see someone appreciate her like you do. I do too. Her last album it was said she was learning really when to tone her vocal back and when to blast it, she was really learning more about her powerful voice. Once in a lifetime talent. Just imagine how many more great sings and performances she had in her? Gone way too soon.

The Woman saying "Wow!" at the end of the performance is Cass Elliot of the group the Mamas and the Papas ("California Dreaming", etc), who was one of the people who set up the Monterey Pop Music Festival. This was Janis Joplin's introduction to world fame; previously, she was just a singer for the band "Big Brother and the Holding Company" who were backing her in this performance. Just a poor girl from Lubbock, TX, bullied and overlooked in school, but Janis loved the Blues. She was 24 that day in June 1967. She died from her own self-destructive behavior just 3 years later, in October 1970. “On stage, I make love to 25,000 different people, then I go home alone.” -Janis Joplin

Actually, she was from Port Arthur, Texas, and went to college at UT Austin. I was a student there at the time. She used to perform at Threadgill's, a legendary beer joint in a converted gas station, on Wednesday, which was folk night. I saw her there a couple of times playing her autoharp and singing. She was something different, even then.

Her self esteem was so low because she didn’t fit in with the mean and prejudiced set in high school down in Port Arthur, Texas. Just before the end of her life, she went on as a guest with Dick Cavett on his TV talk show and talked about being run out of town as a teenager in Texas, and that she planned to return for her 10 year anniversary. "I'm going home," she told Cavett. Unfortunately for Janis, she did go back and the residents snubbed her ONCE AGAIN. It must have been a bitter pill to swallow for Janis after feeling she had conquered those childhood haunts.

She'll always be my favourite female singer ever, and if someone doesn't like her singing, well then you're not my kind of people. Full stop. Same goes for Led Zeppelin! Janis was pretty much unknown here, at the Monterey Pop Festival. After this her career took off, big time. So sad, we didn't get to know what her 30 s/40s and beyond years would've been like. Must do Summertime, live( black and white video). Summertime is an old song from a musical. It was made famous by Ella Fitzgerald. Many many have covered it. We sing it in choir even. Okay, I loved this. I've seen pretty much every Janis Joplin reaction especially Ball and Chain. I've been a Janis fan my whole life and I was a teenager when she was at her peak and remember being in art class and hearing that she had passed away and students were literally in mourning wearing black armbands. I wonder if young people today understand just how huge a rock star she was at that time. Some people become bigger stars after they die, but trust me, Janis was a superstar while she was alive. I think out of all my reaction videos for her, this is my favorite because you express exactly how I feel when I hear this song. If you don't go crazy when you hear this song, there's something wrong with you lol, and you let it all hang out and show exactly how you're feeling. Love it. I still get goosebumps hearing this after having heard it hundreds of times. I have a little note Janis wrote framed in my room as well as three of her original rock posters from San Francisco from the 1960s. About 22 years ago, this very band you're watching play with Janis, Big Brother and the Holding Company, came to my town here in South Florida and we had a mutual friend who knew Janis and the guys back in the day, so she and I went to see them. Of course everyone was there but Janis, who had sadly passed, but they spent the whole night with us between sets at our table and I was starstruck. The guitar player you mentioned, Sam Andrew, who passed away a few years ago, was a gentleman and a great guy as were all of them. He even wrote me a note afterwards thanking me for being so complimentary. I thought of all the questions I wanted to ask them after the event because again, I was just too starstruck. Great job and I just subscribed and I look forward to watching more of your reactions.

❤Janis You did not overreact. I have no idea why people of this era stayed in their seats. Maybe that's what was expected back then. Idk. Great reaction bro

It is the Monterray Pop Festival. Most people in the audience had never heard of Janis. This was her introduction to the music world. She never looked back :) One of the organizers was Mama Cass Ellio of the Mamas and Papas. Sh is seen reacting to what she just witnessed with the words 'WOW'

The woman in the audience you were were amazed at is Mama Cass of the 60's folk group The Mamas and The Papas who also performed at the show, The Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967. 2 years before Woodstock in August 1969. The Mamas and The Papas: John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Mama Cass and Denny Doherty.

NO You did not overreact!! Janis was my favorite female vocalist my whole life! I was a teen when I started listening to her and then soon after she died... it was devastating!!!! A sweet talented young woman was taken out of this world.. I guess God needed her to sing up in heaven for all the angels

You think we don't understand. Many, many and more really do. I'm 65 now, but I understood when I was a preteen. My mom cried a little and shook her head slowly when we lost Janis. I just put my teen head in my hands... heartbroken.

Janis mentioned her classmates were into rock and roll on the radio. She was obsessed with the Blues and had to buy LP’s. Sadly, she was an outcast and didn’t have real friends. This is reflected in her music. People just don’t understand.

Her guitarists name was Sam Andrew. He was a member of the band named Big Brother and the Holding Company. They were already performing when the group's manager brought the diminutive singer named Janice Joplin to perform with them. They knew right then they had something special.

Even though Janis Joplin could belt out singing, she inherited a lovely soprano from her mother. She actually covered a Bee Gee's song on her first solo album in 1969: "To Love Somebody" originally written and recorded by the Bee Gees.

Welcome to Janis Joplin. She will tear your guts and your heart out, every singe time, over and over again. She was relentless, unstoppable, undeniable. Her talent was not of this world. It may seem like it was all improvised, but it wasn't. Her performance was carefully rehearsed, with every lick refined and developed over about a year at this point -- including the scat.. She knew what she was doing, and she worked very hard to get it. And wow, she sooo delivers.

I absolutely love your reaction. Totally gave me life and I've got to share it with my dad when he comes over. My dad and mom had seen her live several times. Janis, along with the Beatles, Stones, Jimi, along with others was always playing when I was a kid. This Festival was a few days long, so I'm thinking not being on their feet was to do with exhaustion and probably being high. I get goosebumps every time I watch this performance and loved seeing how much you got it. LOVE!!!! Otis Redding is another performance at the Monterey Pop Festival to watch. No one was expecting him either.

One of the best reaction videos I've seen...THANK YOU!!! I've always loved Pearl and I'm almost 70. One of my high school coaches went to school with Janis, She was from Port Arthur, Texas next to Beaumont, where George Jones was from. Record exec Clive Davis was there at that festival and he too was blown away and signed her shortly after. She passed away way too young at 27. Same age as Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison.

Figured you'd be out the room. Aretha and Janis were born a year apart so they were age contemporaries, although in different areas of the country (Aretha in Chicago and Janis in Texas). I think if Janis had lived she might have reached similar height as Aretha, even though her genre was rock n roll. You should listen to her early music. Find "Janis Joplin - Early recordings 1962-1963" (I'm gonna try and put in a link here kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2O3h6Rtq75sapo You might be able to cut and paste). Pure blues. Also, members of Big Brother and the Holding Company (her band) were guitarists Sam Andrew and James Gurley, bassist Peter Albin, and drummer Dave Getz. The Monterey Pop Festival was a 3 day outdoor music festival in in California in 1967 (the year I graduated high school) and was famous for introducing Janis, Jimi Hendrix, Ravi Shankar, The Who and Otis Redding. Check it out, there may be vids for all of those performances. It was the beginning of all that came later. I think the audience were sitting down because they were both hot, and stunned, like you couldn't speak. Great reaction!

I am extremely lucky, I grew up with the music of the 60’s, and got to see Janis, Jimi, Clapton, BB, you name them, I saw them. I went to concerts every weekend for years, great memories. I am so happy to see this music being appreciated by you and a whole new generation. Great music will never fade away.
